Today we had booked an excursion to visit one of the most scenic and romantic stretches of the famous Rhine River. The tour combined a bus ride from Frankfurt to Wiesbaden, then continued through several small villages along the east bank of the river until we reached the small villages of Rüdesheim and Assmanshausen, where we boarded a ship for a very pleasant cruise. Many vineyards and castles dot the landscape along this stretch of the Rhine. These fortified castles provided great strategic value back in medieval times, so most of them occupy the high ground on both sides of the river. The mighty Rhine (spelled "Rhein" in German) is the second-longest river in Central and Western Europe. Leah and I were up early as we spent the day watching the beautiful German countryside fly by as we headed from Berlin down to Koblenz, our starting point for the Rhine River cruise. We arrived in here in the mid afternoon and after checking into our hotel, we headed out to explore the town, which to call it sleepy would be an understatement. Little did we know this would be well beaten over the next few days. We headed down to the river and caught the gondala over to the other side and got some very dramatic sunset pictures and randomly explored a small farming expo, which was held in the castle grounds.
