Chipper Meter: High : up and running at 0600hrs; CET; Coffee making marks 3/5. Wilko blend soon finished hopefully.
Plan: To see the entire city by foot and absorb all facts sights and history; Wall, Check Point Charlie: more wall, bunker, Watchtower, sausage vending machine.
Decisions to make: Do I wear shorts? Weather looks better - sun 20c. Are the Berliners ready for my legs. Not sure.
Tech Advice: Do not eat crisps near the Ipad as small fragments have just clogged the "O" key.
Fellow Guests: We thought we were early to the breakfast buffet but had been beaten to the trough by a group of American "globus" (5th Armoured Div) tourists who were en route to Nuremberg and were going for a "snack stop" at some US monument. All I could hear was questions for the whereabouts of the bathroom.
Breakfast rating: The breakfast chamber was well equipped and perhaps the finest this side of The Oberoi in Calcutta. A "crumble" of well heeled Euro Pensioners soon descended. Men in multi-coloured golfing sweaters closely supervised by over dressed wives pretending not to want the "Sausages" and walking tight lipped back to their tables with a small stick of celery and a
glass of "Mummy Juice". The latter being some sort of multi-vitamin drink.(see photo). I had a large glass which must have counter-acted the egg, bacon, herring, pate, cheeses (from Austria), smoked salmon and mozzarella ball platter.
Weather update. Fab; sun sun sun.....
Sightseeing smugness: Massive; today we have set new standards in International sightseeing. Not many Brits are capable of starting serious and meaningful sightseeing much before 1100hrs. We were off an out by 0820. Berlin's best was quickly assessed and documented.
Serious Point: We visited the former HQ of the Gestapo and had an excellent guided tour of the horrors of the Nazi Regime.
Travel Idea: I think I need to patent head traffic lights. This enables local inhabitants to spot a tourist is about to make a sudden map reading stop or unexpected turn.
Clothing update: Photo posted of Cathy's slippers. Not long to go....
Progress: Today Berlin ... tomorrow Warsaw and Karkow.
Supper Bulletin: Just returned from a taste of pre-war Berlin. Our Staff Car picked us up and whisked us from East to West Berlin. At once the dark "Stasi" streets were replaced by the Berlin of David Bowie and Kraftwerk. The restaurant itself was reminiscent of 1920 Berlin. Heavy wood
panelling and smoked glass. Names like Marlene Dietrich, Otto von plumpenberg and Sepp Blatter come to mind. As we all know all Prussian maids are "soiled with an egg yolk" or so the menu claimed. We were treated to a feast of pickled herrings and Berliner Calves Liver washed down with Dark Wheat Beer.
Note to self: Beware of dining partners offering to share "YOUR" starter. Soon after the herrings arrived a small but effective pick up truck was parked beside my plate......
Tomorrow: We head East for Poland (now where have I heard that plan before............?)
