Our hotel's address is Alpenhotel Pfaffenwinkel. Doesn't that just sound good. Admittedly we had walked 28 km in just under 7 hours and had 10 hours of rain (well I added 3 because it dripped from the trees when we were in the forrest!), and we were wet through so maybe not in a position to be unbiased but Pieting is not really a pretty place. Bigger than we are used to but significantly grungier too. Our hotel is good but there's more an industrial feel to this place and one we are unaccustomed to.
The entire walk was in rain today. The only time it varied from heavy was when it got heavier. We had to change clothes at lunchtime and no I don't mean I wore Julie's and she wore mine! We literally wrung them out, put them in plastic bags and put on new gear. And that's a big thing when wearing Gaters (why does spell check want that capitalised and capitalized spelt with an 'S'?) because they are difficult to get off when your fingers are cold and not wanting to co-operate. But new dry socks are super important when you want your feet to do
28 km days.
The walk would have been lovely if it wasn't so wet. The forests are delightful so green and lush although there were a couple of stands that were so thick they were almost black and a little bit frightening. The fields are rich, rolling lands but again things were so wet that it's difficult to appreciate them. There's water running and burbling everywhere, in some places you could not step further than a few meters from the track there's so much water around. Even on the track there were small streams running.
At one stage we came to sign that had Hohenpeissenberg on the walk at 3.9 km and Hohenpeissenberg on the bike trail at .5 km. Now we know why. The walk takes you up, up, up (sorry Julie, too much like the TMB) to the Hohenpeissenberg Pilgrims'Church which was very bland and where the view was about 50 m into the distance (on a clear day you can see miles and to the Alps in the distance, it was not a clear day) then down, down, down again and to the outskirts of Hohenpeissenburg. Oh for a bike!
They was the possibility
of taking the train for about 8 of the last 10 km but it didn't even enter our minds we were having so much fun! Well! But we walked it and now we are showered and dry. Our stuff is hanging and wet! I think it may be the hairdryer in the bathroom working overtime to dry out socks after I finish this.
Have a look at the extra photos, not all get embedded. Check Julie's fall from chirpyness into.... well into non-chirpyness!
Not sure what's for evening meal. There were a few cheap and nasty places we saw (and sometimes that's what we want) but we will see.
Tomorrow has a section through quite a spectacular gorge (Ammerschlucht Gorge) which I'm quite looking forward to. Just hope the rain abaits a bit so it's not too slippery or dangerous.
Anyway until tomorrow. Stay dry.
