We got up at ~6-6:15, had breakfast quickly and left at 7:55 for our meeting with Overlord Tour at Place du Quebec in downtown Bayeux (between the hospital and the tourist info office) at 8:20. We arrived just in time and we left as soon as we got there. In our van, there was another couple from Syracuse, New York that joined our group of 6. Our tour guide was Oliver and he was excellent, I can heartily recommend him. He was more than just knowledgeable of the surface facts but knew in depth the particulars on all the different aspects of battles, places, people, weapons, transports, etc.. We had chosen the
Band of Brothers tour, most of us had watched the TV series before we left to be more familiar with the "terrain and subject matter" we were going to see so to speak but after our tour we all wanted to re-watch it to more fully understand what we had seen. Oliver was very good at putting the geography and the order of events in context to help us understand that d-day and the following days better. As to the tour itself, this is a day that can be emotionally exhausting when you really remember the things you are hearing about took place with real people, young people with families, hopes, and dreams. It is heartbreaking and sobering when you see the beaches and can visualize the mayhem it must have been for them, they were not just trying to survive but trying to conquer the enemy and eventually did. No one can go there and not totally appreciate the sacrifice these men and their families made for our freedom, this is a place that I believe every American should go to and a part of our history that needs to be learned and remembered. It is worth the effort to make this trip. We ended up back in Bayeux around 5 in the evening. We paid 85 euros for the tour, money well spent. If you are interested in seeing where we went you can go to their website and they have their itineraries online.
Back in Bayeux, the festival was still in full swing, we bought cheap sausages from a street vendor, I couldn't finish it even though I tried not to think about what was in it, so Joseph finished it for me...
We found the ATM for Joseph then made our way through the crowd back to our hotel. I packed as though leaving on the plane since I had time to pack correctly at this time. I left my clothes and toiletries for the next 2 days on "top" and everything fit pretty well, better than my last attempt!
We took care of paying our bill by meeting with sister Ceceile this evening so our morning wouldn't be too hectic with getting out and to the train. Off to bed at about 10:30, everyone is ready to be home, but still enjoying our adventure.
