Having been to St.Tropez many years ago, we decided to see the surrounding area. Up in the mountain, about 20 minutes drive away is the pretty town of Grimaud. Narrow streets with houses covered in flowers and 2 tiny churches, one dedicated to St.Roch, the saint of the plague and the other to St.Michael. St.Michaels was beautifully decorated as a wedding was about to commence. The whole town must have been at the wedding as we saw no one else on the streets. The next village we visited was Gassin, which was just as pretty and had many more restaurants and shops and good views from the mountain top. Finally we ended up in Ramatuelle which did not have as much going for it so we went to a bar rather than traipse around in 30+ degrees,
We did not get back until after 5pm so missed the Trivia quiz but made up for it by winning several points in the Name that Tune competition after dinner.
We should have gone to another hilltop town the following day when the ship moored up in Toulon. However we cancelled the trip and instead went into the seaside town, which is famous for it's military harbour and also for it's rugby club at which Jonny Wilkinson played. We made the mistake of catching the little train which was very uncomfortable and the commentary did not really equate to what we were seeing! As it was Sunday, most of the shops were closed and most of the population were out on the beach, but there is a very large market in the morning.
At least we were in time for the Trivia quiz and came 2nd so gradual improvement. There was also plenty of time to finally get some sunbathing in even after our usual long lunch.
