Wendy and Oscar
At Pere Lachaise Cemetery we made a point of visiting Oscar Wilde and Edith Piaf. Oscar's family have put up glass barricades to prevent people kissing the tomb. We were thinking we should have recited his bon mots at the grave.... Do I begin in Paris? Do I begin on the train to Avignon? Do I begin on the drive to the house in Cairanne? Do I begin today, Sunday? I think I have to just jump in and give snippets of our adventure so far.
The highlight of Paris was lunch at L’Ebauchoir Restaurant (http://www.lebauchoir.com/ ) which is Kevin’s and my favorite Paris restaurant. I have never had a bad lunch here, and Wendy was sufficiently impressed to want to eat there again, when we come back in. Aside from a petite peu of shopping, we pretty much did what we could to catch up on sleep, in preparation for Part 2 of the trip, the train to Avignon and finding the house in Cairanne.
Yesterday, Saturday the 28th, we were so excited that we woke up at 6 AM to get on our way. Next stop - Gare de Lyon. After spending the first day painfully schlepping our suitcases up and down Metro stairs, we opted for a taxi to the station - wise decision on our part. The train was wonderful and fast - nonstop to Avignon. But wait! About 15 minutes out of Avignon Wendy and
I looked out the window and let out a collective gasp- OUR FIRST LAVENDER FIELD! Actually, it turns out it wasn’t lavender, but lavendine, which is used in soap. It’s ok, it was purple and really pretty. And it’s the beginning of our week in search of lavender here in the Vaucluse.
Because we had arrived on Saturday and weren’t sure about shopping we opted for dinner reservations at the local restaurant in Cairanne, Le Tourne au Verre. It had lovely ambiance and the food was nice. If you are in the area, it is always a nice option.
The house is delightful. It is set in the old village at the top of the hill and the owners have done a wonderful job with it. There is much sandstone tile work, and lovely touches that complement the age of the original building. Wendy and I each have our own bedroom and bath. We walked outside this morning at 7AM and were hit by the smell of lavender by the front door. It is warm here, but an overnight thunderstorm really cooled things off (and took care of any dust, I might add) so going to the marche
Another Chevre Chaud
Your basic cheese (albeit Chevre) on toast. I wasn't worried. It was my first meal in Paris and I was really tired. today was very nice.
We had been told that the marche in L’Isle sur la Sorgue was wonderful and was not to be missed, and reports were correct. The foods were wonderful and we were agog at the beautiful heirloom tomatoes and fruits in season. We loaded up on both. Lots of oohing and aahing at cheeses, sausissons, breads etc. We stopped for lunch, which was a big mistake, because it turned out we had actually missed half of the market, which was closing by the time we went back. Well, that’s ok. We have the rest of the week…
Tomorrow is off to Sault, the center of the lavender production area, to get our bearing and start our search…A bientot!
