Well there's worse places to be stranded in! We made our way into Brugge (Bruges) in the morning. After poking about a bit, we wroked out it would be worth going to Zeebrugge, not to board the ship, but to go to the beach as the temperature was getting hot. So we took the local train out the Zeebrugge and wandered down to the beach. Weekday the train drops you off well away from the beach, so the walk to the beach is a bit crap along a dual carriageway for about 8 minutes. Anyway once there, the beach has plenty of space. There are some bars on the front and it is a good place to spend the odd hour or so. The sea tempature is much warmer than off the Yorkshire North Sea Coast. ... read more

Hi Everybody, How's things? Hope everything is fine and/or dandy. From Berlin, I've headed south to Munich, but not before a short stopover in the small town of Wiemar. Weimar was an unscheduled stop, but one I'm very glad I did. Weimar ended up being a stop for a bit of inspiration and reflection. Weimar was inspiration because it was one of the cultural centres of Germany, which boasts former residents such as Goethe, Schiller, Bach and Liszt. I visited the Goethe house and museum (Goethe wrote 'Faust' and 'the sorrows of young Werther'), and judging from the residence I think it's becoming obvious you need to be a little eccentric in order to be great. That and you have to hang out with intellectual friends and talk and argue about art all the time. It ... read more

Belgians are weird, they put mayonaise on their fries and charge people to use the restrooms. They at least did Brugge right. It's a town straight from Walt Disney fairy tale. With towers and turrets, ivy covered old walls, swans swimming in the calm river that meanders through town, stone bridges, and windmills at the edge of town. I wouldn't be surprised if I had bumped into Cinderella, having lost her glass slipper yet again. During the day hordes of tourists fill its narrow streets and alleys, in the cool evenings the locals and tourists alike bring their children to the grandest square I've seen yet to listen to the chimes of the bell tower. We spent two days there, just relaxing. Well, sort of. We went hunting for Chris' Birkenstock and we probably visited every ... read more

Wow, this is officially my last entry for this trip. Today I leave for Brussels to catch the Eurostar train to London, and then go to the airport and crash for the night until I leave tomorrow morning. I've had fun the past few days. Met up with a girl and the day before yesterday we actually rented bikes and went to this tiny town outside of Bruges called Damme. We also went to the chocolate museum (overrated, but the samples were good). After that we took one of the cheesy cruises down the canals. Funny how every town with more than 1 canal calls itself "the Venice of the north". But it was all good fun, we ate lots of pancakes and waffles. Yesterday we went with another Canadian girl to Brussels for the day. ... read more

Hello all....it's a beautiful day in Brugge, and why am I in an internet cafe, you ask? Pretty much because I've been hit hard by the Belgian beer : ) and there's too many tourists wandering about during the day for me to cope with at the moment. This place is much easier to get around at night when there's less people, and all the buildings and canals are lit by the sunset. I got here yesterday afternoon, and it's still pretty warm by Edmonton standards. Before that, Amsterdam was way, way worse, though. Thirty-two degrees during the day kind of worse. I had a lot of fun there, and met 2 guys at the hostel who were from Edmonton. We entertained each other during our stay by guessing which tourists were going to drop from ... read more

So I tried on a 31,000 Franc watch the other day. Yeah, that's roughly $25,000. I tried on a couple that were 16,000 and 17,000...but 31,000 felt much better. Yeah, 31,000 is much more my style. Haha...when I was in Geneva I went to Patik Phillipe (a very, very, very swanky watch joint) and tried on a couple $25,000 watches...I was thinking of picking up a couple :) I actually made up this whole story, acting like I was seriously going to buy one. It was fun. When the lady asked what watch I was wearing, I responded meekly, "Fossil". That may have tipped her off regarding my lie. Well as you can tell by my title...I'm in Belgium. But I will tell you more about Belgium at a later date. I must catch you all ... read more

yesterday was so much fun!! i went bike riding with a girl i met the day before. we went on this ride to all these castles (none of which we saw, but anyway). we left at about 11ish and at 1.30ish it started absolutely pouring and didn't stop for about an hour!! we were saturated. we seriously looked like we'd just had a shower with all our clothes on. it was so fun. we were laughing the entire time. i'm loving this belgian countryside. absolutely dead flat. we came across this gorgeous tea house just as it stopped raining and i had my belgian experience. chocolate waffles!! so yummy. so so so good. we felt so bad, we were dripping all over the floor but the shop owners were just laughing at us looking like drowned ... read more

From the Brugge train station, we took a bus to our home base - The Hotel Patritius, our hosts Garret and Elvi Spaey were kind, friendly and full of information on the local history and sights. We were given an upgraded suite (see photo's) due to an earlier cancellation; boy, we felt like royalty. This splendid medieval city is one of Belgium's crown jewels. Also known as the "Venice of the North". No other European city has the feel and the look of medieval times as does Brugge, a city close to the North Sea. It ranks, even today, among the important cities of Belgium. It is also the capital of the Belgian province of West-Flanders. While in Brugge, we rented a tandem bicycle and we went to the nearby village of Damme; glad we did. ... read more
