THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2012 - Up BRIGHT AND EARLY to drive 3 1/2 hours to Limoges to pick up a friend at the airport for a 3-day visit while we are in the Dordogne. Then we had to drive 1 1/2 hours to our swap in Villebois-Lavalette, near Angouleme. I am in the heart of Eleanor of Aquitaine country! We have found, or our friend has, that there is a very good restaurant in the town we are staying so that is where we headed to dinner. The name of the restaurant is Le Lavalette, and yes, it IS excellent. We were lucky in that we didn't have reservations, and were one of two tables served that evening. I have decided to stop eating so much (quality, not quantity you know...) so I had a lamb ... read more

Saturday – Angouleme, stuck in car parks and new gite for the week. Woke early Saturday morning and did our last packing and said our goodbyes to our Dutch hosts before heading on our journey to Angouleme. The countryside changed dramatically with less trees, more rolling countryside and vineyards as far as the eye could see. A very different landscape to the rest of the Dordogne. Noticed loads of motorhomes en route but no British so the plan of speaking to British motorhomers had gone out the window. Most motorhomers seemed to be French with the odd Dutch mingled in between. Stopped at Angouleme to break the journey as back aching sitting in the car seat. We were not too impressed with the city – first of all had an interesting conversation in the Post Office ... read more

Hello all - I have been back in Amberac, with Sandy and Roger, for 2 weeks now, since the end of my house sitting. The weather here has been fantastic - reaching 40 degrees in the sun yesterday. In fact, it was so hot that i had my first swim in Rogers pool, as the temp of the water was 24 degrees. You will probably have sussed that out by the lead photo!! It was lovely and refreshing, after a hard morning toiling in the fields! Roger filled it for the first time on May 1st, after tiling it whilst I was in Toulouse. So I have been working for my keep again. Plenty of gardening last week, with mowing the orchard, weeding, hedge trimming, and general garden upkeep, which seems a never ending job. The ... read more

Well, I have to say that I am now staying in the best place so far. The house is absolutely gorgeous. The guys who own it are very nice. And they only have a small dog, which is quite cute, and 1 cat. The house is literally on the banks of the river Charente, which runs through some of the most beautiful villages in France. I am being fed very well, and worked very hard. I think for the first time in a very long time I am burning more carbs than I am eating!! But I have had some fun as well. I arrived here last Tuesday evening, and started work on wednesday morning. the first job was to clear out a couple of rooms in an outbuilding where the roof had fallen in, littering ... read more
