TUESDAY 12th July – Lovely Pierre, meter man Despite the shared bathroom, ‘80’s décor, tiny bed and disgusting carpet, the staff quarters weren’t really too bad after all. Well, we slept OK anyway, despite the Dickensian surroundings. Let’s face it; this will probably be indescribable luxury in Vietnam….. Woke to steady rain – woo-hoo, a day off maybe? (Dominique has been very off about any gardening attempts in the rain, not that we ever pressed for them) but no, just diverted to the courtyard and drive, more bloody nettles, stingers and other grotesque weeds that, if they were human, would have ASBO’s slapped on them. The only incident of any significance was the man who reads the meter – tiny little black car turns up, gorgeous hunk of French manhood steps out, all swept back long ... read more

SUNDAY 10TH Free day today - and the last in our posh room. Dom shot off to Grandcamp market as soon as we sat down for brekkie at a leisurely 9.30, and we drove down there a bit later. Typical small market, lots of tat clothing stalls amongst the fruit and veg, honey, cider etc. and lots of fish stalls with everything from mini-sharks, dogfish(?) and conger eels, to squid and lobster. Didn’t stay long, headed down the coast to Port-en-Bessin, which was rammed and had a much bigger market running along the quayside. Some serious tat clothing stalls here and E succumbed to dinky little red handbag – absolutely ‘must have’ for an upcoming wedding. Apparently…. We drove on a bit further to Gold beach. Tide was out and the place was quite wild and ... read more

FRIDAY 8TH JULY Garden work abandoned for the day as so much rain fell yesterday evening and last night. Elaine did rooms with Zara while I did some DIY stuff, including trying to fix the loo in the “staff” quarters. I know getting out of the comfort zone is one of the objectives of this holiday, but in no way did I expect that to extend to the repair of French toilets…… The cistern was split so it was useless, and all the bolts that held it to the, er, operational bit were rusted solid so I had to smash it up with a hammer and Dominique said she would get another. Then I fixed a few doors and things while Elaine practiced her hospital corners. Something to do with making beds apparently, but as a ... read more

TUESDAY 5th JULY continued….. Sorry, no pics with this issue - they somehow disappeared between camera and computer. Nothing special; pics of weeds mainly......... Nice little lobster dinner after the wet bike ride. Yes, that’s lobster as in one of those big crusty things with the serious claws that tend to sit up the inaccessible end of most restaurant menus. A fairly regular feature on the dinner table here apparently, given that Dom's sons are out fishing for them most days. First lobster either of us have had, and absolutely luvverly – beautiful sweet, dense meat that just fell out the little pink beastie with very little persuasion. Could have done with a nice chilled Muscadet but we had to put up with water. Really, I mean how tough can this “holiday” get? WEDNESDAY 6th JULY ... read more

Monday 4th July 2011 Woke up this morning from a weird dream involving Sooty and Sweep glove puppets having a pretend fight on a bed – blame it on frites overload! I am taking comfort in the almost certain knowledge that frites contain hardly any calories, what with being French and so chic and all, unlike those nasty greasy chips! Finally departed Arras around 10 a.m. - and 7 hours later wound up in a little village called Grandcamp-Maisy, which is about 20 kms from Bayeux. The journey was completed in scorching sunshine, which was made easier to bare (sic) by doing it topless, and the highlights en route were (a) taking a deliberately meandering rural road (b) a superb 3 course lunch (when in France….) and (c) the display of Elaine’s European driving skills for ... read more
