Friday 17th July - Caen - Salon La Tour (south of Limoges) Cabins were all taken on the ferry so I had booked a reclining chair in a lounge. All well and good I should imagine if you locate your chosen recliner at the start of the voyage. But having changed out of my soaking trousers, pigged myself on a surprisingly delicious lamb shank, written some drivel for yesterday's blog and looked at the map it was now 1 am. I duly lobbed up at the lounge expecting to crash in my booked seat before it became apparent that you couldn't see a damn thing in there. The lounge resembled a cinema but with absolutely no light and sadly no cinema dolly with her trolley and light to show you to her seat. (I must be ... read more

Carrefour in Brive Sandy and I are over our flu and decided to head to Brive today. Brive is a medium size city about 40 minutes north of here. It houses a wonderful cathedral, major SNCF station for the area and a Carrefour. Carrefour is the reason we made the trip. Carrefour is what Super Walmart should be. Built into a shopping centre it is huge with easily distinguishable departments - food divided into a bakery, fish market, meat department, huge cheese section(bien sur), hardware, books, clothing, furniture, etc. A bank, cleaner, DVD rental all can be found. Anything you might want but minus the cheap Walmart crap and the terrible displays. It is soldes time. Sales don't happen all year round but by French law only during a couple of designated weeks each year. Think ... read more

Bonjour Since I haven't done an update on here for a while and I have a few pics to show you all I thought I would spend half an hour doing some updates. Well I went off to France for a little break to stay with my parents who have a farm house there, they normally live here in the UK but had gone over themselves for a break so decided to join them. The weather was suprisingly nice for October, was lovely and sunny and not too cold. I think we only had one day of rain, happened to be the day we had planned to go into Limoges but never mind. I didn't do that much, just relaxed and read my book, watched some movies and drank red wine in the evening with my ... read more

We are now at a site near Montignac in the Vezere valley. Still in the Perigord/Dordogne region. We arrived Thursdsay 25th of September. I have to think hard what day it is now. Each day follows a gentle routine and flows by so quickly . I can’t believe how easy it is to fill the day. I thought I would be bored but there does not seem to be that much time when I can’t find something to do. Visiting places obviously takes up our time and we have pleasant days out doing the touristy things, but the day to day living soon expands to fill the day. I’m very pleased too, how easily we have adapted to living in the ‘van and awning. We each skilfully (if not gracefully) perform what I think of as ... read more

The search for the Holy Grail of showers It is now a month since we began our sabbatical. France has provided everything that we expected of it. Honfleur, Trouville and Deauville were superb, old fashioned seaside towns. Carnac and its standing stones were a joy,and the Perigord or Dordogne area is rural and simply beautiful. The Dordogne area has everything required to keep me interested and busy; sunshine, historical sites, and miles of quiet rural roads for cycling. The "Le Paradis" site is the best yet in terms of facilities. I have searched tirelessly for it and have now found it: "The Holy Grail of showers". A heated shower block and red hot shower in France? I thought it was unheard of. At last, no more freezing- cold showers and a visibly shrinking appendage . The ... read more

We have had funny old week here in Argentat. We have definitely chilled out and become more accustomed to the French routine of life. The sun has shone all week which always helps. We continue to meet new people camping alongside us. Dutch, German and even one Czech chap and his son. Swapping travel stories and sharing a drink has become an enjoyable part of our life. It's getting cold at night now, although the afternoons are balmy and warm. The caravan is chilly in the morning and we will have to put the heating on overnight now I think. We've explored around these parts over the last few days , in the car, on foot , on the water, in a canoe (for the first time.) and finally ( for me ) on the bike. ... read more

19th September We have arrived in the Dordogne at last (2 wet days ago). I have always wanted to explore this region. The journey here was tiring. We moved on from Carnac and spent two nights near La Rochelle on a very quiet site in the Marais du Poitevin Regional Park. I think we have overdosed on the travelling (driving) over the last couple of days. It has made us tense and snappy. One or two things have conspired to darken the mood a little over the last few days since Carnac. In fact many of those things have been the bloody French machines it has been our misfortune with which to interact . Take the Superloo in Concarneau. (Please!) As we are on a budget, we chose to buy takeaway sandwiches and Coke for lunch ... read more

Today is our last day in Crocq and we will really miss it! I got up around 8 and walked up to the boulangerie and came back and made coffee and Ken got up around 10. It was a very misty morning as there was a big storm and a lot of rainfall last night. It made for a hot and humid day!We just kind of relaxed in the morning and I took some pictures of the house we are staying in (even messed up as we had it!). At about 1 pm we went out to La Grange aux Marmots for lunch. We left it a little too late as when we arrived the chef told us he was closed. BUT he said he'd make us a lunch anyway as he remembered me from my ... read more

We left François and Marie-France's today at around 10 am to drive back to Crocq. They were very disappointed that we only spent 2 days and they made us promise the next time it would be at least a week! Lovely, lovely people! We decided to take the "shortest" route back as opposed to the "fastest" route as I didn't want to travel on the motorways again. The shortest route was certainly NOT the fastest but, boy, was it gorgeous!. We drove through the Ardeche region and the Auvergne region....both stunningly beautiful regions. The roads were small and winding and we went over some very big semi-mountains (being from the Rockies in Canada it's hard to actually call these mountains!) though they were quite high! Some places reminded us of the highlands in Scotland. We passed ... read more
