Today was a major turning point in our French lives. Hahaha, its really nothing serious, it just really cracks us up. In order to get the point across well I have to explain some things first. I've been meaning to make a post about my daily/normal/boring French life, because I know you are all so interested. Bear with me on this one, I'm doing this mainly for my mom and little cousins, so the post will be very randomly detailed. First, here's my class schedule. Monday: 1-2 CDL (we sit around on computers learning grammar) 2-4 Ecrit (writing) 4-5 Oral (we usually have to write up a little speech to present) 5-7 Phonetique (a student criticizes our accents) Tuesday: 4-6 Civilisation (the best class ever with Yavanka who calls us her American friends. Its probably impor ... read more

I forgot to tell you all about the holidays we've had this past week. Last Saturday (the 2nd) was La Chandeleur, something about lights and candles. Our civilization teacher was explaining it too us last week, but I don't remember why its a holiday or anything like that. All I knew was that you eat crepes. And we had lots of them. We had dinner crepes with ham, egg, and cheese (I think I had two of those) and then dessert crepes. My host family brought out a plate with about six inches of crepes, there's only four people in the house. I don't remember how many I ate but it was a lot. There was sugar, jelly, lemon juice, and syrup to put on the crepes...no nutella though, bummer. It was good. And then of ... read more

Hello everyone!!! I am so sorry it has taken so long for me to update you all on my time so far. The computer situation is a bit difficult right now. To use some of the computers and WiFi on campus we need our student id number and password, but we don’t have those yet…kind of dumb. There is a room of computers that you don’t need an id or password, but the computers are really old and half of them don’t work, the keyboards are different than in the US, and it smells really bad. Oh and my current host-mom doesn’t have the internet, and I can’t even use my computer because it uses too much electricity and is too expensive (I’m changing families, which I’ll get to in a bit). So for now I’ll ... read more

The Cathars didn't muck about defensively speaking. How's this for a defensive position? The castle at Queribus Even paranoids have enemies. When they Cathars were run out of Bezier, the Cistercian abbot-commander, was supposed to have been asked how to tell Cathar from Roman Catholic and replied “Kill them all, the Lord will recognise His own.” Nice. We stayed a little east of Carcassonne, which despite the promising fortifications was a bit disappointing. Did very little the whole week, which was very enjoyable. ... read more

Here's the view from Tim's parents' house in Fuilla, in the very south of France (practically in Spain). We spent a lot of time on this terrace, mainly eating tasty food and drinking Muscat de Rivesaltes. This is an aperitif wine, so obviously it's very uncouth to be drinking it by the bottle, but the beauty of staying in a house in a tiny village is that there were no French people to see and disapprove! It was very sunny and lovely here, in contrast to the floods and gloominess back in Angleterre. ... read more

we arrived in perpignan late last night on another train packed with backpackers. i cannot stress how much i dislike the spanish trains, there are not enough of them, they break down (like the one last night), they are just rubbish. however when they do work. its wonderful. watching the rocky mountains suddenly flourish into greenland from castellon to barcelona was just such a stunning sight. today we have planned our route for the following days and cleaned all our clothes. perpignan is a cute town with interesting shops and sites, i like it. Emily was lovely for letting us stay last night. much appreciation. she has the cutest cat called cookie. we bought her a bag of sweets from this amazing sweet store in town. the girl that owned it looked exactly like Melody.
