Wednesday, April 7 We all rose around 6am chez Christine and packed the car to leave. I met Joachim's two sons: Julien and Jonathon, who are both very handsome and around my age. Here are the cast of this great adventure: Adults (aka old people) Christine Joachim (Christine's friend) Fanny (Joachim's girlfriend) Isabelle (Christine's friend) Josette (Christine's friend) Lola (Pierre-Jean's Spanish host mom) Amigos de Vacanzia! (aka young people) Me Cyntia Rejane (Isabelle's daughter) Julien (Joachim's son) Jonathon (Joachim's son) Paco (Lola's 13 year old son) Pierre-Jean (Christine's son) Without much delay, we all hit the road in our three car... read more

Hello, 8/26 - We left Barcelona in the afternoon. As we rolled along next to the ocean we saw very small towns right by the sea. They looked like perfect little rural villages. We had planned to go to Montpellier and then onto Bordeaux. But these little villages looked so cool, maybe we should just be spontaneous and get off at one and try to find a place to stay? I think I see one with a hotel/restaurant sign over on that bluff... Just as we were walking off the train, I decided to be dumb and quickly ask the guy across from us: do you think we could find a place to stay in this town? He couldn't speak English but flagged down two younger girls walking down the aisle. They told us we should ... read more

Monday 20th July - Carcassonne - Vernet-Les-Bains Rather than take the autoroute via Perpignan, I elected to take a direct route folllowing La route de Carthars and over the Col de Jeu. Brilliant ride, although after yesterdays excursion the M25 would have seemed interesting so I may not be at my most objective. Once on the move the weight doesn't bother me too much and as long as it is dry you can still have fun. With the wind noise under control there is little to complain about the bike, save for a switch like throttle at low openings (necessitating over use of the clutch) and the most ridiculously inaccurate fuel gauge in the automotive world. You'd get a more accurate reading sticking your tadger in there. Would that make it a dickstip? (as opposed to ... read more

So the time has come: tomorrow I'm leaving Perpignan for good, with a whole load of mixed feelings! I've been back here for two weeks following the Christmas holidays, in order to sit the January exams. The first week was more or less exam-packed, leaving little time for anything else, but the second week has been much more of a whirlwind of packing, doing lots of 'last...' things and generally tying up loose ends and saying goodbyes. Oh and another exam, just for good measure. And as sod's law would predict, we've found some gems tucked away in this small city, which we wish we'd dscovered earlier. One such place is the appropriately named Cosy Club. After months of whishing we could find a nice little place for a drink and a chat, we finally found ... read more

So, here we are, the 20th December 2008, which has arrived impossibly quickly, and tomorrow I'm flying home for Christmas. To all intents and purposes, my time in Perpignan is done. All that remains is to return for two weeks in January to sit my exams. It's kind of strange. I can't wait to go home, I'm so excited about seeing my family and friends again, but for all its irritations, I will miss Perpignan, especially all the wonderful people I've met here. This week feels like it's gone quickly, but yet Monday seems like a long time ago. It's just been a blur of clearing out, packing, socialising and sitting the odd exam, one on Tuesday and one on Thursday. So until Thursday, none of us were properly excited about Christmas because we had the ... read more

With a somewhat half-hearted attitude, we made it through the last of our lectures this week, which was a relief! My Wednesday was saved by Rosy, Katie and Franzi; after an unsuccessful meeting for my year abroad project, a lack of decent birthday cards for a ten-year-old boy, too many people in town and queues at the post office, I was in a pretty bad mood. But when Rosy texted to say they were going for a hot chocolate, my mood picked up. We sat cosily inside drinking hot chocolate in one cafe and then moved on to our new favourite place; the small salon du the we'd discovered at the weekend. This time I did actually have tea, of the forest fruits variety, and it wasn't a let down. We just had such a lovely ... read more

The end is in sight! With less than two weeks before I fly home for Christmas, and only a few lectures left to go, my time in France is nearly over, apart from two weeks of exams in January. That's just crazy! Although at the moment I can't wait to go home and I'm constantly playing Christmas songs that make me nostalgic and emotional, I can't believe how quickly time has flown here. Still, there's a bit of time left, Vicky's coming for a couple of days, and we've got some Christmas baking to do. As well as the last few lectures and a couple of exams, of course! This week, on Tuesday, we went on another trip to the Irish pub for our customary ciders, taking a detour on he way to see the Christmas ... read more

Just as you start to become disenchanted with this place, it has a way of making you fall in love with it all over again. I was desperate to throw myself into things, partly to take my mind off leaving Britain behind and partly to make the most of my time here. We'd been told that there was a fair in town, and following Adam's vague directions: "You head towards the castillet and then carry on out of town" we finally reached it after wandering for a while and negotiating a dual carriageway. Charlotte and I, feeling up for an adrenaline boost, didn't hesitate to jump on a ride which seemed to be some sort of huge crane-like thing, with seats on either end. Now, I am not usually one to get stupidly scared on fairground ... read more

As my fifth week abroad draws to an end on this most Hallowest of eves, I must report that I am still alive and well, abeit I have many new leg and arm scratches from wretched brambles, Holly oaks and other fun prickled trees, and a scratched eye from a Mimosa tree. Could be in worse shape I suppose. The trials and tribulations of an olive farm worker. Life here in France is good - I am building an impressive C.V. (resumé if you'd like) which will be an entire post in the near future. I shall remain at the Olive farm in Laroque des Albères, France until the 10th day of November, at which point my sights lie south to Spain. Rowan, my wonderful Kiwi and I are beginning a walk that will take us ... read more
