After our visit to Avignon we are on our way to Carsaconne. It is only a small town with its main attraction being the castle that sits up on the hill. We have a great view from our hotel balcony. We didn't get an official tour of the place so after dinner we walked up to the castle. Seriously, it's just like a castle from a Hollywood movie. Or Shrek even! The walk is about 5-10 minutes. Todd and I watch the sunset from outside the castle walls. We took the back way in climbing up a hill and through the back door. From the outside it looks deserted. Having returned from a long (in kilometres) but short (in time) trip from southern France to Mauritania I thought I'd better sit down and describe it! I am a 'regular' on the Thorn Tree, Lonely Planet's forum (apologies to travelblog!!) and needed 'somewhere' to escape to after a long year of work. Somewhere cheap & warmer than southern France is at Christmas!!! I started making arrangements for another independant jaunt then decided, for a change seeing as it was over Christmas, to see if 'someone' out there wanted to join me on my trip south. Train We caught the bus from grandpa and grandma's place to get to the train station. We took the train from Toulouse-Matabiau to Carcassonne, painless, standard issue train. Ville Basse We walked the mile from the Carcassonne train station in ville basse to the citadel, with a requisite stop at Jen's new favorite store Etam. We explored the walls, the shops, the chapel, and had lunch. Carcassonne is an incredible place and we will have to come back to stay at the hotel on-site and take some time to visit the wine country.... read more
