This morning, we got up around 6:30 to get an early start on the day. Of course, we had a traditional French breakfast - hot pastries from a local bakery, fruit salad from Paul’s parents’ garden, tea for me and Marianna, and hot chocolate for Paul. Then, Marianna and I got ready to brave the motorway again. But first, she and Paul had to kiss goodbye. They did it least three times! Marianna would get to the door, then remember something she had to bring, or some last bit of advice for Paul, and then they’d have to say goodbye all over again, with Paul winking the whole time, as if to say, ‘Don’t worry, dear, you know this parting isn’t as bad as it seems. It’ll be over in a flash!’ It was so cute. ... read more

Simone went back to work this morning, so I decided to spend the day touring La Cité de Carcassonne. La Cité is a restored fortified medieval city in Carcassonne, France. Not just a castle, mind you, but an entire city including a castle, basilica, hotel, shops, residences, etc. I couldn’t get a picture of the entire city (I would have needed a view from much further away), but you can see a good shot at the Carcassone entry in Wikipedia (click to enlarge) and I have included a picture of a model that shows the walls, castle, and basilica. The place is just amazing. From what I’ve read, the site has been occupied as a strategic location at least as far back as 122 B.C., when the Roman’s settled there. While the restoration was not not ... read more

Our timing couldn't have been worse for cycling in the south of France. Record heat, up to 35 C today, I am told. Today was a day off and we went to Carsaconne in the morning by train. By the time we left at noon, we were melting and the crowds were just beginning to arrive. I had a 2 hour nap this afternoon and then a massage by the massage therapist for the Kiwi team that trains here. Monday, we went into the foothills of the Pyrennes. The initial ride into the foothills was still relatively cool. The greenery, the lovely roads, the company all made for a delightful start of the day. Then Ruth, Mary Anne and 2 others headed down along a river while yours truly decided to challenge a 10-11% grade. It ... read more

Geo: 43.341, 2.46664Less than 2 hours sleep. Returned from Jazz fest at 2:30 AM and others returned even later (kept me up). Changed trains in Hendaye. Awesome french pastries ... ham and cheese croissant, chocolatine , and a raisin bun. How many french pastries can I eat before butter oozes out of my pores???Speaking french has been challenging. What little I knew has been long forgotten. Met an old French lady on the train that speaks Spanish.I thought it would be cooler in France, but it's experiencing a heat wave with temps in the high 30's. Grabbed a meat pie walking to the old part of Carcassonne from the train station. Bought some very expensive cookies there (3€ for 4). The bad part? Not very good. Ultra touristy here, very pricey. It's like a mix of ... read more

We arrived at Le Monastere yesterday after an uneventful trip. Le Monastere isn't quite as upscale as I thought it would be. However, it is a beautiful little hotel in a lovely little town, Limoux. The proprieter is a cycling coach for several teams such as New Zealand and has coached a woman who was silver medalitst in last Olympics. He was an economist in his former life and was head of the office of the budget in Canada before he completely changed his life style 12 years ago by starting this business. He and his wife and a couple of employess run it. There are 9 of us here, of whom 6 will be staying for 2 weeks. We still intend to go to Israel next week. Yesterday, I assembled Ruth's bike very easily. I ... read more

Just kidding. It's been a while since our last blog, so there is much catching up to do. We are currently in a small village called Preixan that is within the Midieval city of Carcassone. SO AMAZING, but we'll get to that. One thing we forgot to mention in the Prague blog (it took my all not to spell that BLOGUE), was the daytrip we took to a concentration camp called Terezin. A ghetto turned workcamp turned death camp, and many sections have been newly converted into concrete hot dog stands. Weird. The place was also quite unkept-- meaning that we could have walked into any of the barracks and carved out names into them. It's nice to have the up close and interactive experience, but I doubt the important parts will be around in 5 ... read more

We are on our way. We have been lucky. Three days ago, we were upgraded to business class. We are in chicago in the red carpet club, waiting for our flight to Frankfurt. Ruth's Bike Friday was easy to pack and is travelling free! and easy. I hope to log on regularly to keep everyone in touch -- even if you aren't particularly interested i hope to make you jealous. We say goodbye to Cannes and leave for Carsaconne. I wish we had stayed a bit longer here. I didn’t even get to the see the beach down the road. Ah well, maybe next time I’m in Europe eh? As I had stayed up last night uploading my blog I was very tired this morning. I slept 3 hours to Avignon where we had lunch. Avignon is a small town south of France. It is enclosed by fortress walls. There are cobblestone streets, the Palace of the Popes, lots of cafes, restaurants, and bakeries. Todd and I have lunch in a crepe café in a hidden street. It was delicious! Probably all that butter they cooked it up in! Still very filling and satisfying. We encountered our first stuck up French person there. After our meal ... read more
