From under the Eiffel Tower to the most beautiful Gothic Cathedral.... Phil and I continued on and took a day trip to the infamous Chartres Cathédrale de Notre-Dame(a special merci to the Dimons!) The cathedral is a must see on any visit to France. Only about an hour by train from Paris, and you can see one of the most (if not the most) beautiful examples of Gothic architecture in Europe. There are over 130 stained glass windows (most not even changed since the 13th century) I recommend taking a guided tour or renting the audio tour of the church, we did, and we learned quite a lot about the symbology behind the stained glass and the stone sculptures. It is really a magnificent example of medieval Gothic architecture! Unfortunately we could not take photos inside ... read more

Well, after having a blast in Caen, I wasn't really sure where to go next. I wanted to get down into Southern France, but I also wanted to stop somewhere first. So...that somewhere turned out to be Tours. However, I think the reason for stopping was more the fact that I was able to catch a train from Caen without transiting through Paris. Anyway, I arrived in Tours, and found it to be a pretty city with a wide parkway running in front of the train station. I quiclly located the hostel on the map and hiked over. When I arrived, it had a sign saying it was closed until 6, so I went to the nearby riverfront to sit and pass the time. When 6 came, I walked back and checked in. It was relatively ... read more

Europe » France » Centre » Tours October 15th 2006

This past weekend I took a short visit with Katie and Kelly to Tours, a city between my town and Paris. I love highspeed trains, the ride only took 45 minutes! We just stayed for one night but we packed in a lot of fun times. Tours lies in the beautiful valley of the Loire river and is a jumping off point for visits to chateaux in quaint medieval towns. We went straight to the small town of Amboise, about 10 minutes from Tours. Amboise is small and intimate with cobble stone streets and sidewalk cafes, chocolatiers, boulangeries, and chapels. I felt like I had traveled back in time as we climbed the pathway to Chateau d'Amboise. http://www.chateau-amboise.com/ Originally built in the 15th century, the castel has goen through extensive renovation and deconstruction throughout the centuries. ... read more

Following a decidedly roundabout route, I moved here from Canada last week to spend the following 7 months in France, learning french, travelling and taking a year off school. The emphasis will definitely be travelling and not going to school. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to be one of the tramps that so heavily populates this area, I have a job. I am working in the french high school (called a lycee) as a language assistant. That basically just means that I am teaching the kids how to speak English and get comfortable speaking it, whereas their teachers are the ones who beat them into learning grammatics and who knows what all. So a little about Bourges, then. Its a population 76000 city, built on a hill and roman ruins. The crowning glory is ... read more

We waved goodbye to our English friends being shuttled off in taxis to catch the Eurostar home. We ended up sharing a taxi with the Canadian couple also going to the train station. We were all heading to Tours where they would be picking up a car and us looking for the nights accommodation. We found a one star hotel but could not check in until 2:30pm, 4 hrs to kill. So we wandered the city. They have a beautiful gothic cathedral but at this point I couldn't tell you which was which, there are so many in Europe! We then wandered to the center of town and decided it would be ok to spoil ourselves one last time with fine french food. We decided to go for crepes. I had a goat cheese crepe of ... read more

Dormans can be reached, if you leave the overcrowded center of Reims using the D980 direction Paris. There you will find the peace you seek and a wounderful view over the valley of the Marne. A small camping site near the river gives a cheap ability to stay. Dormans has a small nice old church, a French-German war cemetry and the french memorial of the "wonder of the marne" from 1914. The memorial widely visible on a hill southern to the village is a honorous building. Constructed like a Church it reminds of the past cruelty of the war. For only 1 € you can climb up the steps of the memorial and have the greatest view over a valley I've ever seen! ... read more

I promised to start this time with Puppy, so here she is in all her summer glory outside the Guggenheim Museum in Balboa. As she lives there permanently I’m not sure how she is clothed in winter but she was a beautiful sight the day we were there. After visiting with her (and the rest of the artworks in this wonderful museum) we headed north to Guernika. By expressway it was about 50 kms but we took the slow way through torturous coastal mountains and it took us nearly 3 hours to get to this small valley town. Guernika is the Basque town that was unexpectedly bombed heavily by the Germans in 1937 on a market day as a practice run by Goerring. The bombing was targeted on the market, the school and the town not ... read more

Le Grande Tour de Europe - what you have always wanted to know about our travels. We have covered 12000kms with about 3 days and 500kms until we return the car in Paris. It has been a great adventure and there maybe left-brain friends who really want to know what it was really like. If you take a map of Europe (maybe 2 or 3 pages in your atlas), this will help you to trace our journey. Start in Paris and run your finger to the right through Reims to Strasbourg, cross the German border to Baden Baden and then up the page to Leer (near the Dutch border) and Hamburg. Slip to the SE to Berlin then down to Quedlinburg and across through Dresden to Prague. Head down the page to Vienna and across to ... read more

It's so weird that my time in France is coming to a close. Everyone is packing up to leave and I still have another month, but I know it will come too soon. C-Pat and I are headed to Paris when we are finished with exams on Wednesday to have one last hoora before our families get here and she leaves. Planning on staying at 3 Ducks Hostel which should be fun. Benny A came to visit and we had a QC reunion with lots of reminiscing and wackyness and my nickname is now HC Bones. I am thinking about heading to Stuttgart, Germany to visit an old friend towards the end of June. This would be pretty intense considering the World Cup will be going on. This week (in addition to studying) I have taken ... read more

Alone and unwell, stuck in an expensive foreign hotel room. I can't say I was really 'living the boho dream' during my three nights in Blois. I didn't fancy the 5 mile trek to the out-of-town youth hostel, and more importantly I needed to sleep. Such a goal was never going to be acomplished by being turfed out into the streets from 10 to 6, as is often the policy at Hosteling international. So I checked into a cheap hotel. A little place that was recommended in my guidebook, right across from the station. Only it didn't turn out to be the little cheap hotel that was recomended in my guidebook. That was directly across the road, and in my sickness induced haze I hadn't noticed it. It was a whole ten euros cheaper aswell. I wasn't ... read more
