Brrr, minus eight degrees at Helsinki Airport this morning ... and minus 16 degrees in Ivalo which is where we will be heading later today. Well, actually, Ivalo is just the airport that we fly into. Ultimately we are bound for the Hotel Korpikatano in a remote place called Menesjarvi. There we will spend the next seven nights watching for the Aurora Borealis and our days dog sledding, snowmobiling, ice fishing and going on a reindeer sleigh-ride (when will we sleep?). I use the term 'day' very loosely here because the sun will not show itself above the horizon while we are inside the Arctic Circle!! So it will be either twilight or dark for the next week. A new experience for us; we have been in Alaska in July and seen the midnight sun - ... read more

Hello everyone. I just got back from my trip above the arctic circle. And for those who don't know, it is called lapland. Lapland was one of the greatest experiences I have ever had. The people i was with were amazing and so fun to be around. The first bus ride was a little long but we finally made it to Muonio after a long 18 hours in the bus. Right from there we went skiing at a nearby ski center. There was only one slope open at the resort. Let me say, it was pretty boring for me and my friend from France, who was a professional skier. After skiing we all went back and ate something we all relaxed and went to sleep early. (let me mention that the sun rose at 9 and ... read more

After an awe-inspiring ferry crossing an ice-bound Baltic Sea, I arrived at the Finnish port city of Turku. I was rather sleep-deprived after a very early start in the morning, so I invigorated myself with a bracing run around the snowy city and then got an early night. The next morning I decided on an impulse to Finnish Lapland to see the Northern Lights. I'd read that around the equinoxes is the best time to see them, and that solar activity was at the height of its eleven year cycle in 2013. A rather expensive detour, but I decided that I couldn't really be in Finland at that time and not try and see them. I looked at various ways of getting up to Lapland (1000 km North of Turku!) and ended up booking a flight ... read more

Geo: 67.1571, 26.9157The night before we had been taken by snowmobile pulled sleigh at minus 24 degrees to a snow restaurant. This was a huge igloo with tables and chairs made of ice- don't ask if it was cold! There was a fire in the middle but you couldnt feel the heat especially if you were sat by the wall of the igloo. The meal consisted of mushroom soup, salmon, veg and potatoes and a blueberry cake and coffee. The drink on the table was berry juice which got colder and colder. Fortunately I had taken our flask with cherry brandy in it which made the berry juice palatable. We all ate the food rapidly before it too became cold and then as one we all stood up ready to be taken back to a warm ... read more

Geo: 67.1571, 26.9157It was probably the most uncomfortable ride so far as we were sat at the back of the sleigh which got more of the bumps. We had expected it to be pulled by a reindeer, but as I have eaten most of them we had to make do with a snowmobile. This took 6 of us up to the top of the highest hill where we went into yet another log cabin for coffee and had a talk about Amethysts and how they are mined locally. So lots of lovely rocks to look at. Then it was down the mine we went and armed with a small hammer we searched for amethysts. Everytime I found an interesting looking rock our guide looked at it with his torch and told me it was worthless quartz. ... read more

Geo: 67.1571, 26.9157Todays activity led by the gorgeous Ansti, was a hike through the woods and up the hill on snow shoes. Despite the fact that it was 15 degrees below zero we were soon very hot during the hike uphill and starting to open side vents in the snow suits. One or two people peeled off on the low road with the other guide whereas the rest of us decided to stay the course and get to the top of the hill for the lovely view. All went very well until it was time to go down and Ansti launched off into deep snow and we dutifully followed. Must say most of the descent back to the path was spent on my backside and once down I am hopeless at getting up. Still it was ... read more

Geo: 67.1571, 26.9157It is 20 degrees below 0 and falling, 9pm and we are taking a stroll around a frozen lake. There you have it- the excitement of an evening in Finland! At the end of our 40 minute walk there is a wooden hut with burning log fire in which to warm up after a short foray onto the lake to see what there is to see- on this occasion no Northern Lights but a stunning display of the stars and constellations which we would never see back home. All attempts to photograph this superb display failed so if the Northern Lights do appear I doubt whether we will get any pictures. The following morning we tackled the usual buffet at leisure. Ian made superb pancakes in the waffle maker. At least we have now discovered ... read more

It’s Christmas Eve 2012, and I am on a tour bus in Northern Scandinavia going from Kiruna, Sweden, to Inari, Finland. It is about -25 degrees outside which is a little warmer than it was yesterday, although ice is starting to form on the inside the bus, by the window I am sitting next to. Yes, it is cold, but we keep ourselves warm by having some fun conversation with our fellow tour-goers. Most of them are Australian couples, although there are a few Kiwis thrown in the mix too. They’re all good people and good chats, fun people to be spending long coach journeys with. We eventually arrive at what our tour operator describes as a "resort". I suppose technically it is a resort, as it is a winter leisure complex of sorts where you ... read more

In between driving like hell for thousands of kilometers, my faithful unlicensed co-driver and I stopped to wander about Urho Kekkonen National Park in Sodankylä, North of Finland. We arrived there around midday, and set off with pristine equipment and sufficient accessories - two pairs of dry shoes, two backpacks that were not about to fall apart anytime soon, first aid kit that could easily sort out a decent-size village that had faced a series of weird accidents all taking place simultaneously, enough astonishingly mild ready-made pasta to suppress our appetites for days, flashlights, towels, sleeping bags, repair kits, pinhole cameras, you name it. We had confidence in our earthly belongings but little fai... read more

We survived. 32 reindeers and a thousand-ish miles later I return to tell the tale. On 6th of August my flat mate and I essentially moved into my Nissan Sunny '92 for two weeks. She analysed maps, I drove like hell. Our intended first stop was Seitseminen National Park at Ruovesi, but since we spent hours stuffing our faces with coffee and cake at Tampere we arrived quite late. The information desk was already closed and it was getting dark. The map hero, also known as my flat mate, informed us that there is a deserted road nearby. We decided to camp on that off-road spot, since Finnish Every Man's Right allows people to stick up ... read more
