The weather has been downright miserable, at least by our standards, since our arrival in Copenhagen. Although we can tolerate the cooler temperatures (40s and 50s), it's been the blustery wind conditions that make walking--even short distances--very uncomfortable. The evening before last, when a frontal system moved through the area, the winds howled at upwards of 40/mph, rattling the windows throughout the night. As a result, our sightseeing plans have suffered a serious setback. However, we did make an outing of sorts this morning, when Dee and I rode the metro from the nearby Christianshavn station to the airport to greet our good friend Cindy at the arrivals area. Cindy flew from Orlando, Florida (via London Gatwick) to spend a week with us here in Copenhagen, and it was great to welcome her after a typically ... read more

Yesterday morning we departed Heidelberg for the hour-long drive to the Frankfurt Airport, where we boarded a Lufthansa A320 at 1:00 PM for our flight to Copenhagen. Travel days are always a bit nerve racking, but it was pretty much smooth sailing today, as check-in, security and boarding procedures were organized with typical German efficiency. We even had enough time before our flight to grab a bite (and some Pilsner beer) at one of the snack bars. Despite the long walking distances from the airport terminal to the departure gates, Frankfurt earns high marks from us as far as major airports are concerned. Soon after landing in Copenhagen, we connected with our taxi driver, who delivered us to our rental apartment in the Christianshavn district of the city by around 3:00 PM. We received a very ... read more

As soon as we crossed the Arctic Circle going towards Nordkapp, we started seeing reindeer. It was very cool. Someone had painted a red nose on a reindeer crossing sign, so Rudolph is known even in Norway. Nordkapp (North Cape) is the northernmost point in continental Europe (71*10'21"N); the sun doesn’t set here from mid-May until the end of July. We were there in mid-August, and we were very lucky to see a beautiful sunset, considering how rainy it had been on our drive to get here - it was actually clear that whole day. It was touristy, but also fun. On our previous trip in 2005, we met some motorcyclists who had driven more than seven days from Italy, only to be socked in by clouds and they could barely see 50 feet in front ... read more

Dear All Hello again, for my third and final update on my lovely little winter trip to Denmark. I had enjoyed two full days of sightseeing until this point, around Copenhagen first, and then two royal castles situated in Hillerød and Helsingør in northern Zealand. For my final full day, I wanted to explore more of the natural beauty of this part of the world, and planned a visit which would take in both coast and forest, and after ending up with some additional time towards the end of the day, I also managed to fit in a lake. Whilst so far I had visited some quite famous tourist sights of Denmark, this final day enabled me to really get off-the-beaten track, and just explore what was around me in the natural north of Zealand. It ... read more

Dear All Greetings once more, my second of three blog entries on my lovely little trip to Denmark, reporting this time on my second full day there, on the Tuesday. After a full day exploring the tourist sights of Copenhagen, along with many other international tourists, I felt that on my second day I wanted to explore more provincial tourist attractions, hopefully more off-the-beaten track. The tourist crowds in Copenhagen weren’t overwhelming, though I’m sure they are in the summer, but I always feel I want to explore the “real” country when I visit a place. On my second day I feel I did just that – I had planned to spend the morning in Hillerød visiting its amazing Frederiksborg Slot, and then head up to Helsingør in the afternoon, to visit its stunning Kronborg Slot, ... read more

Dear All Greetings from London – I have just returned from a lovely four-day trip to Denmark, and plan to write up my adventures there in three blog entries over the coming weeks. I have taken a cue from some of my fellow travel bloggers on here, in not always writing whilst on the road, as this seems to take valuable time away from the travels! I plan to continue to write whilst on the road during my longer summer trips though. So Denmark – country number 79!! And as per the TCC country/territory count, 92 – slowly edging my way out of “Provisional” to “Full Member” status – yay! :D It also continues my current aim to fit in a few smaller trips in between my big summer trip, as well as my desire upon ... read more

Back in Copenhagen, and with just one full day left in Denmark's capital city it was time to give a once-over clean-up to our Frederiksberg apartment before we headed into the city centre to meet up with our darling daughter Katherine. All three of us walked down part of Strøget, the world's oldest and longest pedestrian street which was established in 1962 and is 3.2km long. Buzzing with cafés and shops on either side of the street, it is where Kev bought himself a new leather jacket. We ended up at the Stork Fountain behind which is the building where Café Norden is and where we decided to eat lunch. It was such a pleasure to have our youngest daughter all to ourselves and to enjoy both her company and such delicious food. For anyone who's ... read more

We flew from Heathrow's Terminal 5 to Copenhagen where we were met by our darling Katherine and Sienna, then it was off to their place to be reunited with Evie, Isabella and Thomas before finally settling ourselves into our Frederiksberg apartment. It was an apartment which we'd swapped with the owners - Aida and Adis - who were in our house while we were in their apartment; plus we had use of their car while they had use of ours. There was a large Christmas tree across the road from the apartment which, once it was dark (and that occurred before 5pm) was lit up with lights and with a star at the top of it. We could see it from our lounge room and two of the bedrooms on that side of the apartment which ... read more

We watched our ship reverse in and parallel park in a small inner harbour on the Baltic Sea side of the northern tip of Denmark, then receded down to brekkie. After that we were off on our Voergård Castle and pastry tour. Along with 2 other coaches. Voergaard Castle was originally built by a bishop, to give him somewhere to meet up with his lady friend when he was visiting this part of the country. It was confiscated from the church by the crown after reformation, and changed hands many times over the next 200 years - at one stage it was one of the largest estates in Denmark. In 1955 it was bought by a Danish man who’d been living in France since 1906 and had married a countess. Her title didn’t not transfer to ... read more
