The weather has been downright miserable, at least by our standards, since our arrival in Copenhagen. Although we can tolerate the cooler temperatures (40s and 50s), it's been the blustery wind conditions that make walking--even short distances--very uncomfortable.
The evening before last, when a frontal system moved through the area, the winds howled at upwards of 40/mph, rattling the windows throughout the night. As a result, our sightseeing plans have suffered a serious setback.
However, we did make an outing of sorts this morning, when Dee and I rode the metro from the nearby Christianshavn station to the airport to greet our good friend Cindy at the arrivals area. Cindy flew from Orlando, Florida (via London Gatwick) to spend a week with us here in Copenhagen, and it was great to welcome her after a typically tiring overnight flight crammed into uncomfortable airplane seats for 10+ hours. She looked a little tired, but in good spirits, when we greeted her. Shortly thereafter, we all boarded the metro at the airport for the ride back to our apartment.
Our guest's first request was for a bottle of Carlsberg beer, which we had located at the grocery store yesterday, and
then Dee made a nice lunch with salami, cheese, ham, avocados, olives, lettuce and tomatoes to go along with a delicious baguette we bought at the bakery across from the metro station. After lunch, jet lag began to take its toll on Cindy, so she took a shower and hit the sack for a couple hours. In fact, we all napped or lounged around for the rest of the afternoon!
We're certainly hoping for some decent weather this weekend, and Sunday's forecast looks promising, with clear skies and temperatures approaching 60 degrees. One of the things we want to try first is a scenic cruise on the canals around Copenhagen, but it would hardly be worth doing so in the rain.
Dee's Comments: The windy weather the other evening was a little scary. At first I told Mitch the strange noise I was hearing, like some weird moaning and creaking, was coming from the radiator next to our bed. We eventually determined it was the wind, whistling around the large windows, so I had to stuff a rag into the window sill to keep from going crazy. Mitch's live weather forecast from the balcony smoking lounge today was
short, and not so sweet: "F***ing brutal out here."
We did enjoy a nice lunch at a little cafe not far from us, where a one girl operation was serving about a dozen customers. She made an excellent selection of white wine for me, and we followed her recommendations for an unusual sandwich, which we shared, that was made with wild boar pâté, and a delicious bowl of cauliflower soup served with pesto and watercress. We need to come back to this place!
Strong rain showers in the middle of the night, but awoke to clear skies (but 40 degrees) for our trip to meet Cindy this morning at the airport. But by the time we reached the airport, light rain began to fall. It was great meeting Cindy when she arrived, tired but smiling, and we can only hope the weather improves during her stay with us.
