we leave here to go to another town at 4, but a quick update before that. last night when we were travelingt o the train station, we got on the bus and asked for tickets for both of us. we were handed 4 tickets total, and when the officials came onto the bus, they asked to see them (in most countriesd they have people that hop on occasionally to check tickets) we gave them ours and then they stopped the train and told us we had to get off. outside, they explained we didn't have tickets. we showed them what we had just bought and they told us that we needed seperate tickets for every piece of luggage. one guy was really loud, and he pissed me off. we told him we didn't know this, and ... read more

We're in Prague just for the day. Got here at 7:00 this morning after taking the overnight train from Krakow. Really enjoyed Krakow until we were ready to leave town. The hostel was clean, we had a huge room in a historic building and the hostel owners were so nice. Our room wasn't clean when we got there, and we had a double bed instead of twin beds; their cleaning lady had gotten into a car accident and broke her leg!! Everything was fixed though, and they kept appologizing profusely. Even gave us a box of chocolate!! We also had the best breakfast in any hostel we've stayed in. We took the bus tour to Auschwitz/Birkenau..our guide was fabulous; it was the first time I've been with that many young people who were stunned into silence..they ... read more

Well I've only been here for like 8 hours but man, craziness. Mad cobblestone streets with wild old buildings. We checked out basically the whole city today with the exception of the castle. We're saving that for tomorrow. Charles Bridge is nuts as well as the museum. We found a good deal on an apartment for a couple of night.s about 15 euro a night. Everything is screwed up with using check money. 28 czechs equals 1 euro. So its tough. Happy to have the appartment for a couple of night to relax and keep of the drinking train. I know were in the beer capital of Europe and its like 2$ for a pint but I gotta keep my game face on for my birthday. We're moving over to a happening hostel in the pub ... read more

Those of you who have followed our travelblog know that we love hiking in the Sarka Valley. Today, a beautiful warm Sunday, we took our last long walk before heading back to our home in Maryland. After lunch we rode the tram to the end of the line. With only two days left, counting today, we said if we were going to make this hike we'd better do it today. Not wanting to totally exhaust ourselves we rode a city bus to the top of the hill and transferred to a tram. After riding the tram to the end of the line, we climbed off and set off on our hike. There is a MacDonald's at the end of the trolley line. How is that for market research, placing a MacDonald’s at the end of a ... read more

With only three days left before heading home we decided to return to Vysehrad where the Peter and Paul Church is located as well as remants of a fortress that was constructed in the tenth century. Also the Vysehrad cemetary where many famous Czechs are buries is located here. As we approached the church I noticed the stone faces on either side of the three doors and decided to snap pictures of them. Some carry a Biblical theme that I could identify. The symbology of others were a mystery to me. ... read more

As we walked, I could not resist taking a few more pictures of buildings. Those of you who follow this blog know that Nancy and I are fascinated by the beautiful buildings in Prague. All these pictures were taken in two blocks while walking along one street. This is the street that inspired me to begin taking pictures of buildings. ... read more

Prague - a very interesting place indeed. The boys and I spent the most time here. 5 nights. We were under the impression that it was very cheap there, but in reality it was basically the same. Our hostel was awful. No street sign outside, and a rickety old elevator that took us to our room on the 5th floor or the bathroom on the 2nd floor. At least we had a bed to sleep on, even though there were no curtains on the window and it became 30 degrees by dawn. We went on some paddle boats up and down the river which was beautiful, saw the Charles Bridge. We visited a night club which is the biggest club in Europe, it had 5 stories, each level had a different type of music. I got ... read more

Dear everyone I know, Go to Prague. Now. No, don't wait. Go. Quickly, before everybody else I just told beats you there. In fact, don't even read this. Just go. Still here? Okay then. Here's the breakdown. I've never felt this way about a city before. Ever. Seriously dude, I think this one's the one. I'm gonna ask her out. I bought flowers and everything. I know I may have left an unsatisfying impression with my description of the airport before, but what I left out of that description is that, in spite of the rocky landing, we were overjoyed to see rain on the tarmac as we touched down. I've never been so happy to see rain (you know, given the horrific heat we'd been marinating in the whole time we were in Rome). The ... read more
