More snow that fell during the night and colder temperatures greeted us this morning. As I do not have a thermometer I have to guess at the temperature. My guess this morning was that it was in the low to mid 20’s as I walked to the library to begin work for the day. I was glad the walk is not very far as my ears were quite cold by the time I reached the library.
I had a new adventure here today in that I used the telephone for an outside call to find pricing information for performances at the Czech State Opera. My first problem was finding the telephone number. Thank goodness for the Internet and good web sites. I found the homepage of the Czech State Opera is opera.cz and that once at that page I could toggle it to a page where all the information is in English. From there I found the telephone number for their ticket agent. Now, on the the second unknown, does that ticket office have English speaking agents? Well there is no way to find out other than to call and ask. I was not surprised when the lady who answered the phone immediately switched from Czech to English upon being ask if she did, indeed, speak English. The rest was easy, tickets can be purchased over the Internet, or over the phone. If I ordered them by phone I have to use a credit card and can pick up the tickets just before the program begins at the “Will Call” window. Naturally this was good news. All I had to do now was to find out how many others want to attend the opera, call the ticket office again and place the order. The five of will see Puccini’s Turindot. Being an operate illerate I know nothing about the opera, the story it tells nor the music. I expect I will recognize some of the music. Of course the opera will be sung in Italian and thatleaves me out in the cold as far as understanding the words. When I commented on my lack of understanding of Italan she replied, “But the subtitles will be in Czech.”
“Great,” I replied, “that is really going to help me a lot.”
The performance begins at seven and runs three hours. We will take public transportation to and from IBTS. Fortunately the public transportation system is very good and is very easy to use. We are looking forward, not only to the performance, but to seeing the inside of the State Opera House as it is reported to be very beautiful.
Elke, the young librarian from Berlin, gave her excellent presentation last night. She gave an overview of the seminary library where she works and the software they are using in their automation project. In addition to her excellent presentation she handed out a booklet she wrote on automating a library and questions to ask a vendor. The booklet should prove to be very valuable to other librarians who are just automating their library or in the planning stages.
