Hi all, Just a brief note to say that we have been doing the Islands off Croatia. Hvar and now in Korcula before heading to Dubrovnik today by ferry. Both islands and their towns are very special places. Of the two, I think I would have stayed longer in Korcula as it is a little, just a little mind you, less touristy than Hvar. Stunning scenery, history and food which is a little more ethnic Croatian than the Italian-German fare that Hvar seemed to thrive on. They had a rock concert in Hvar and then Korcula with local Croat band which is very popular over here. Sounded more like a cover band with songs from Pogues, The who etc etc, but the words changed to Croatian - very interesting. Apparently sea sponge tampons are all the ... read more

Yesterday i woke up about 7 an saw us going out of Šipan with the morning sun, really nice. After a long swim break an a petrol stop, it was off to explore the town of Korcula. Again the old town was a bit like Dubrov, built with a wall around it. Saw Marco Polos house from the outside. There is only one main street an they call this the thinking street as it is the only one without stairs. We wandered around a bit an found a cool little cocktail bar on the very top of a little fortress. It was like a ladder getting up to it so they bought the drinks up was a pully system on the outside of the building. After a couple of Pina Coladas later (an meeting 3 ... read more

Our cultural and historical appetites sated, it's back on vacation in Croatia, driving even more conservatively, headlights full blaze at midday in order to placate the unsympathetic Croatian Policija. Back by the sea in Croatia. Vacation time as it never rains along the Dalamation Coast in June. SEND IN THE DROUGHT BREAKERS! In actual fact, the rain normally comes early morning and will usually clear after an hour or so. Korcula Island is another of those idyllic blobs of land nestled in the azure waters of the Adriatic. We found a neat little apartment owned by a guy who would be a walk up start in any Croatian Richard Geer lookalike contest. He and his family were just as amicable as the one we bunked down with in Mostar. Richard Geerovic took us fishing, invited us ... read more

We must visit that guy from the bar, he was so cool. Has his girlfriends farther kicked him out for being a bum? First things first, getting to our lovely vineyard where we can taste the home made wine and relax. Update: We have arrived at the accommodation and to our surprise we have a fairly nice room with kitchenette and a very nice bathroom but where is the vineyard with the home made wine etc. Let me quote the description.... Don't get me wrong it is loads better than Lapad. Lumbada is v.quiet, not sure if I want to spend the whole 3 days here as booked, maybe go and stay in Korcula Town. We found a cocktail bar on the beech just next to the marina; you can't miss it as there isn't anything ... read more

Geo: 42.9743, 17.0393Today it's official - I am starting the second half of my trip. Strange coincidence - it happens on the day that I turn 29. Yikes!!! 30 is just around the corner ... noooooooooo!!!!!!!! But for the first time in many years, I actually feel my age and not 20 years older. Well, maybe I am exaggerating ... I feel only 10 years older than my age!Said goodbye to the girls (sniff ... sniff ... ). We made plans to meet in Dubrovnik in a few days. I went off to the ferry and grabbed a great ham/cheese/pepperoni panini on the way. Also had a sausage roll. Met a nice German couple on the boat - they drove all night to get to Split but you could not tell as they were both full ... read more

As always our summer holidays in Croatia were just amazing. Having invited Karina and Ricardo just made it even nicer. We spent 12 days sunbathing, trekking, playing tennis and cards, swimming, driving boats and eating…. preferably at home, as Korcula lacks good restaurants and Ricardo is a marvellous chef. We celebrated Karina and Erik's b'day over there! We visited many islands around Korcula but didn’t manage to visit Mljet Ecological Park as planned. Prices have increased dramatically in the last couple of years, so we had to reduce some of our activities. Nevertheless we managed to enjoy every single minute and plan to go back there for many summers to come… ... read more

I am on the island of Korčula right now. I am exhausted. I am sick. I am crabby as hell. Maybe it's from spending too much time in the sun (although I've been careful to SPF-it and only lie out in the later afternoon when the sun isn't so strong) and not rehydrating enough. Maybe I caught one of those "got it on an airline/ferry/other enclosed method of transportation" sort of bugs. Or maybe, after eight years of university life, the novelty of a passel of inebriated frat boys (or in this case, Aussies) shouting their special rendition of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" at 4-fricking-30 in the morning has finally worn off. (Already sniffling, I had gone to bed at 3). This particular group was in the room next to me at the hostel, but ... read more

The ferry from Split to Korčula was relatively still and non-nausea-inducing. Hooray. on the way, we stopped at the port at Hvar island, and I momentarily thought about getting off there and staying in Hvar for one night. But oh well. The LG guide had said that there was really only one hostel on the island and to look for "a guy wearing a cowboy hat." Upon leaving the boat, I did see a guy wearing a sombrero holding a hostel sign, but I thought that maybe that was the competition preying on innocent, tired backpackers who read LG ;). After a once-around, I asked the sombrero man if he was Zlatko, the hostel owner I had spoken to on the phone. Indeed he was, and he led a group of us all of about 200 ... read more

Croatia is amazing! We have been on the Island of Korcula for 5 days now and the water is so amazing, you can see the bottom in the deepest of waters. We spend the days at the beach because it is too hot to do anything else, average temperature here is in the 40's. The water is so salty which makes it super easy to stay afloat and super fun to swim in. Yesterday 8 of us rented a ˝speedboat˝ and cruised throughout the island and stopped off at various beaches, one having a 14th century monestary on it that was absolutely beautiful. The water here is much like the tropics, so warm and fun to swim in. The nightlife on this Island is full of tourists like us which makes conversation very interesting, yet often ... read more
