Wednesday 21 May 2008 When we arrived in Korcula Town we stored our bags at the bus station office which involved chaining them to a drain pipe in the corner of the ticket office. We set off through the old town centre. It's quite small and you could walk through every street in less than half an hour. But it was was attractive and there were so many interesting things to see that we spent half the day wandering. First stop was the Gradski Muzej Korcula which is the town museum and is located in a small stone house. It was very interesting, especially the old chart of land laws on the wall that stated that land must not be subdivided and must stay in the hands of descendants of original inhabitants of the town. Thursday 15 May 2008 Despite sleeping on the floor, we had a very restful night. The weather was quite warm, the carpet was soft and the Mediterranean Sea was flat. We awoke to a beautiful sunrise over the port of Dubrovnik where we had to leave the boat for Croatian Immigration. Once through, we were approached by a crowd of private accommodation providers. They were very polite but we had to decline because we were getting back on the boat to continue on north to Korcula. We sat on the port for about an hour admiring the view and the crystal clear water. Back on the boat, we continued for another 3 hours to the island of Korcula. Korcula is one of the largest of 1100 islands off the coast of Croatia. Once at the dock ... read more

I woke to what I thought was the breakfast bell, I was amazed I had made it up, shortly after I realised that it was actually the lunch bell! Apparently only three people had made it to breakfast. Nathan rolled into the dining area looking a little worse for ware, I think it was seasickness although it could have been the sh*tload of beers and shots from the night before. Claire, who was rooming with him told us how he had been felling a little seedy before bed so grabbed the closest thing and puked into it. It just happened to be her bra! He then found a plastic bag and filled that, before using it as a pillow. Then in the morning, Claire awoke to see his hand fully stretched from the top bunk with ... read more

Hello from Korcula Town on Korcula Island Sorry we have not blogged for some time, I think in fact it is the longest blog break of the trip. Simple fact is we have been unable to get decent internet access since we left Trogir and arrived in Korcula Town. So, just to jog your blog memories, we last wrote to you at length from Trogir which was on the mainland just north of Split. Our last day/night in Trogir was spent bunkering down out of the cold and wet and we left very early on the morning of the 16th heading south for the Island of Vis. The girls were still asleep and Debs and I got underway as we had a 30+ nautical mile passage ahead of us. We had a terrible fright with a ... read more

Since Cadaques in Spain, our journey has turned to the east, and towards the distant city of Istanbul... Before leaving Spain we went to the bizarre and fascinating Dali Museum in Figures, designed by the man himself. It was replete with sexual imagery, clever visual tricks (a room with a sofa and fireplace becomes a glamorous woman's head) and giant sureal statues. Even the building was mental, lined with giant eggs. Cool. We drove back into Spain and the town of Carcassone. The town has a fascinating history. The Romans built a huge wall here in the 3rd century AD which is still standing. It has had another enormous wall with towers added in the centuries since by first the Cathars and then the kingdom of France. The town on the hill is therefore surrounded by ... read more

Hi all. Unfortunately we have not come into contact with any computers that allow us to post photos. Korcula in Croatia was incredible. Really quite astounding. We arrived off the ferry from Dubrovnik and got taken to a Sobe (homestay) with a tiny old man in the center of the old town. We wanted to rent an apartment with a kitchen and our own bathroom. Turns out this guy was renting out his basement with a hide-a-bed and a hot plate, so we said no. He was a little mad but we trecked off in search of a better place. We were picked up by a english speaking Croatian who wanted to rent us his place, but no kitchen so he took us to his "friends" place. Turns out they didn't have a kitchen either, but ... read more

After leaving the busy, busy Dubrovnik we wanted to chill back and enjoy some quiet times, so we ended up on the island of Korchula. It is the biggest island in the Adriatic and it has a long history behind it. It was first named "Melania Korkya" (dark forest) by the ancient Greeks , because of the lush vegetation covering the whole island. It was part of the Venetian Republic, and as such it was heavily fortified for defence against Turks and the Genovese. The town is sourronded by towers and walls on all sides, with houses and palaces nestled tightly in between them. Unlike Dubrovnik, almost every house is inhibited by locals, and it is at times mind boggling that we were sleeping in a room that was built 600 years ago. Entrances to houses ... read more
