April 23, 2016 - Today was our last day in Dubrovnic. It poured all day but that did not stop us. First on the agenda was a Game of Thrones (GOT) tour. It was excellent. Even my sister who has not seen the series or read the books was quite impressed, enough to start watching. We visited all the sites used to film some of the scenes (they only started filming in Dubrovnic in season 2 - King's landing was filmed elsewhere in season one). From the fort to the parc to the wall surrounding the city and the streets of old town, the narrow streets were the royal family was attacked and of course Blackwater Bay. The guide had photos to remind us of the scenes. It is quite amazing how it is done. A ... read more

I have had a rather magical couple of days here in Croatia. I drove across the hilly border from Slovenia two days ago. I was pleased to receive a Croatian stamp in my passport. The countryside here seems rockier and the towns less well-to-do, but despite warnings I had heard about the grumpy natives, I have found the Croatians to be almost uniformly pleasant and helpful. Yesterday I drove to Plitvice Lakes National Park. It is quite remote from other tourist sights, but is such a big draw in itself that its many hotels do a big business and the park is generally crowded. Tour groups, primarily from Europe and Asia, flock there. It apparently remains largely unknown to Americans. It is a natural wonderland consisting of a series of small lakes connected by numerous small ... read more

Today was our first full day in Dubrovnik. We started out with a walking tour of Old Town. Dubrovnik is one of the world's most magnificient walled cities. Now a UNESCO world heritage site. They took us in the mountains above the city to look down on it. It is quite impressive. It boast the first and oldest pharmacie still in operation today. It is a pedestrian only city. The road that leads into the city may be enough to accomodate cars. However, all the other streets are very narrow. Some so narrow that you would have to be very carefull riding a motor cycle through them. The population of the old town has drop from 5000 in 1991 to 500 in 2014. the older people are moving out because it is too growded and noisy ... read more

Our last stop before Venice was Dubrovnik, a place we have been eager to see. We eschewed the expensive cruise ship shuttle and took a public bus into town, arriving at the famous hole-in-the-wall. We decided once again to start with coffee and internet research at a cafe right there. The waiter gave us a passionate speech on Croatian history and the young man sitting next us chimed in and told us that Croatia had banned slavery early in the fifteenth century, before any other country. What a great introduction to Croatia! We had noticed a "Game of Thrones" tour offered, and realized that we recognized locations from scenes in the series. Some history of Dubrovnic: "The prosperity of the city was historically based on maritime trade; as the capital of the maritime Republic... read more

Geo: 42.6537, 18.0948For our second full day in Dubrovnik, we had the option of a full-day excursion into the neighboring country of Montenegro. We have a good friend here (well, they actually moved to Colorado a few months ago, but still...) who is from Montenegro, and we thought it would be a unique opportunity to see the country. She also raved about the beauty and said we had to go. The vast majority of our group did also opt for the tour, though a few remained behind for another day of sightseeing in Dubrovnik,When we awoke, the sky had a weird pale to it, and we had heard the winds pick up during the night. As soon as we walked outside to board the bus, we could tell that it was 20-30 degrees warmer than the ... read more

Geo: 42.6537, 18.0948K and I had visited Dubrovnik for a long weekend way back in 2003, while we were living in Vienna. K's cousin Allison and Ann came to visit, with their daughter Abby, who is a few months younger than Anna. They stayed with Anna while we took a weekend trip, and then we watched Abby, while they went to Salzburg. Certain parts of that trip remained in our memories, but it was not until we returned to Dubrovnik, that K and I realized how much we had forgotten. This morning we were to have our formal whisper-enabled tour of Dubrovnik, and then the remainder of the day was at our discretion. The weather was much like the previous day, with cloudy skies and a brisk wind, but it was in the high 50's/low 60's. We'd ... read more

Geo: 42.6537, 18.0948We all slept well, though we did have an early wake-up this morning. After checking out, we were to have our formal tour of the city of Split this morning. As we were finishing breakfast in the hotel, a long and steady stream of incredibly beautiful young women started to stream into the restaurant. We were walking out at the time, and the sheer cacophony of their collective perfume was overwhelming. What we joked was a Playboy convention turned out to be the Miss Croatia beauty contest which, unbeknownst to us, was taking place at our hotel.Though we had our own guilde with us the entire week -- Rok -- in each of the cities we visited, we had local guides show us around. Our guide in Split was particularly good and incredibly funny. ... read more

Christmas in the Balkans It’s mid-December already and time to begin my final adventure of 2015…..another new location for yours truly – really looking forward to this one. It’s a very cold morning here in Las Vegas, with the mercury hovering around 27f, probably colder than where I’m headed over there in the Balkans. I was checked in, cleared security and waiting for the first of my three flights to Europe by 5am. The Minneapolis flight departed on time and three hours, breakfast and a couple of bourbons later, we landed on time. I had a short connection time so hoofed it speedily thru MSP and boarded my transatlantic flight to Amsterdam just before takeoff. It was an uneventful 10-hour flight to my favorite European airport (Schipol) and I managed to watch a couple of new ... read more

I had never been on a cruise ship before, nor had I thought about taking a holiday on one, as I imagined they were for rich people, or for the older generation. My imagination led me to believe that the cabins would be claustrophobic and my days would be boring, how wrong I was! I booked my holiday reservation and prepared to set sail on the cruise ship around Dalmatia on the Croatian coastline. Boarding in Dubrovnik Once aboard in Dubrovnik , the adventure began, with a welcome drink, introductions to the Captain, my tour guide and members of the ship’s staff, as well as an explanation of the safety measures. I was then shown to my cabin, and from the moment I entered the lift, I was in awe of how huge the ship was, ... read more

After a lazy sea day it was a bit difficult to rise this morning, but we made it up to the Lido anyway as we approached the ancient walled city of Dubrovnik in Croatia. I got myself a bowl of Irish Oatmeal and a banana, and two of their tiny demitasse cups of Swiss muesli each crowned with one raspberry. Sharon waited in line to get her scrambled eggs, potatoes and white toast. The Nieuw Amsterdam is definitely fuller on this leg of the cruise. We’ve been meeting many people at meals that are also on a Collector’s cruise, as we are, who embarked in Venice when we did some two weeks ago. There are still some on board who came before us who lived thru ‘the incident’. We came to dock in direct view of ... read more
