The final port of call on this mini cruise was the port of Zeebrugge. This port is on the north Belgian coast in West Flanders. It is not possible to walk in the port area therefore a shuttle bus had been provided at a premium of €10 per person for one return journey. The shuttle dropped off in nearby Blankenberge where it was possible to take a train to Bruges, a historic market town that lies only 15km south. If Bruges wasn’t your thing, you could explore the narrow streets or stroll down the wide promenade of Blankenberge but from experience, even on the mildest of days, there can be a chill wind that whips off the North Sea and across the sea front. We were not sure why one is not allowed to walk out ... read more

We've barely had time to unpack and the entertainment has already started. At 2:15 a local choir were carol singing in the atrium. As we wandered through the ship to get our bearings, a distinct smell of mulled wine and festive spices wafted through the air. The odour became so strong, it morphed in to a ghostly shape of a giant hand and grabbing me by the nostrils, dragged me towards the source of the irresistible smell. My body raised off the ground and the force of the spectre glided me nearer to unspeakable ecstasy and that sweet taste of Christmas. Despite me gently floating on air being guided by this apparition, to any on lookers, it just looked like a bloke walking towards the bar!! A hand (not the phantom one this time!) reached for ... read more

6thOctober Ooestende to Zeebrugge 16nm Had a look at the tides, currents and weather situation for the next few days and decided that our original plan of going to Breskens on Thursday would not work as there is a double low tide on Thursday and that would not give us enough time to get up the coast before the currents were against us. So, late decision and left today. Also gets us out of the worst wind expected tomorrow. Pulled into the visitors pontoon and another boat that had just arrived took our lines. Had a chat and they were impressed that we had come ‘all the way from Australia’. One wants to do a circumnavigation so he was very keen for a chat. They had just come up from Oostende for a day sail, would ... read more

Today we docked in Zeebrugge, which is one of the ports in Belgium on the North Sea. The ship got here about 7:30 AM and our tour departed at 8:15. So before that we had to get up, dressed, and fed for the morning. We went up to the buffet in the Horizon Court and sampled some of their standard breakfast fare – omelet, baked apple, bacon, sausage, pastries, juice, tea and milk. Then we headed to the Explorer Lounge for a very short wait before they called our tour. There were multiple buses taking the same tour, so that shows us that the selection was popular. Certainly it sounded like the most interesting to our point of view. When boarding the bus they provided each person with 2 pieces of Belgian chocolate – VERY rich. ... read more

Not all Infrastructure Committees visits were long or distant. Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg usually hosted one or two day trips, as these countries were close by. An example of a short trip was the one hosted by Belgium, a one day trip to their naval base at Zeebrugge, followed as the custom by a cultural and historic tour of nearby Brugge. After a tour of both places, we had a pleasant dinner of moules and frites before returning late to Brussels. I will let the pictures speak for themselves.... read more
