Just a side trip to Brugges whilst in Amsterdam and what an amazing town! The buildings, the laneways, the canals....words can't do it justice. What made it even better was sampling the great Belgian beers, chocolates, mussels and waffles. If you are ever thinking of going - just do it, and the 385 steps up the bell tower! ... read more

Sunday 6 March 2011 Going down to breakfast each morning has been a great way to start the day: the room is tastefully decorated, we've had good company, and we've really enjoyed the soothing classical music (in stark contrast to the 'worst of the 80s' that we were subjected to in Vianden). This morning, our hostess Annemie suggested that since we like walking, we might like the short hike (7km each way) to the nearby mediaeval village of Damme. This is where the ships to Brugge used to enter the canal system before the sea channel (the Zwin) silted up. Most of the walk is along the big canal (the former Reie River) - straight (apart from one tiny bend) and flat - certainly an easy one! Once out of Brugge/Bruges, the path is local traffic ... read more

Day 15: Amsterdam, Netherlands to Brugge, Belgium to Calais, France to London, England Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 It is back to London with a pit stop in Brugge, Belgium to buy some famous Belgium Chocolate before the trip ends. Brugge was a beautiful little town and we found a nice chocolate shop hidden in one of the many alleyways in Brugge. After we got our chocolate we headed back on our coach to drive to Calais, France where we had to catch the ferry into London. At customs we had to show our passports and although my sister was stopped and asked why she had a temporary passport we both were able to get onto the ferry and into England. When we arrived in London, we took the train to Norbury where our cousin Jean picked ... read more

Hello there! Its been a while since I’ve updated my blog, mostly because we haven’t been anywhere worth mentioning. This month however saw me being treated to a lovely birthday present by Jaime - a trip to Brugge! We boarded the Pride of Brugge ferry in Hull (UK) on Sunday 10th in the early evening and a calm overnight crossing saw us arriving in the port of Zeebrugge. A short coach trip later and we were enjoying out first glimpses of beautiful Brugge. Cobbled streets, horse drawn carriages, beautiful swan filled canals and numerous delicious chocolate shops left us having a wonderful day - not to mention the amazing churches, 17th century bridges and stunning town buildings The only downside was that we didn’t get to stay longer as there was just so much to explore. ... read more

(sorry if you got 2 msgs re previous post - Blog site said unpublished so did again) this is written the day after and its noon+ in Bruxelle as I was just so tired after yesterday (that beauty sleep I referred to - a catchup day) - mostly setting an alarm so I would get up in time to pack and get some b'fast from the bakery on the corner (one o them nice layered apple slice tarts) and get out of the hotel before seeing some sights/whatever before the train to Bruxelle ard 3pm. When I bought the one day jazz ticket (for Thurs.) it included one free visit to a Brugge museum - most of them are 8E - the hotel gave me a card for group price of 6E - by most accounts ... read more

as blogging seriously wrecks my beauty sleep this will be ruthlessly short. Today saw 2 churches in depth - St Salvator Cathedral and the one up the road, Church of Our Lady, too late to really do the Mennling/Hospital Museum so tomorrow, bought 15 various Belgian chocs, ate 3, drank cherry beer, went to one jazz show at Concertgebouw (Keith Tippetts , solo piano) - had dinner - mussels and chips - another beer, a liqueur of Anvers, discussed the lack of trade with the restaurant lady (weekends are still good but mid-week is pretty slow), the other jazz show - crazy Italian group called Il Vino all'Opera - piano, accordion, drums, bass, clarinet and tuba - like Fellini circus music sometimes - a blues by Rossini (oh yes?) - then last look at the tower ... read more

Geo: 51.2094, 3.22523"Ok then, just off to another country for the day, I'll be back in time for dinner". A phrase rarely uttered by an Australian. But in this case just going to Brugge (Or England) for the day is second nature for the Nord pas de Calais people. We left the rolling green hills of France to the flat, farmed countryside of Belgium, with only a small sign to confirm the change of country. No checkpoint, so no stamp on the passport. The language changes from the language of love to the harder toned and spoken Flemish, so we were both out of our depths. It was only a 1.5 hour trip and before we knew it we were standing in front of a statue with no map wondering which direction to take. Just head towards the ... read more

Another nice day in Brugge, with the exception of being charged 9 euro for a Coca Cola at a restaurant...the waiter just ended up paying for it by not getting a tip. Other than that, the day was fun. It started at breakfast with our hosts and we met the other two couples staying at the B&B. Both couples were older, one from London and the other from a little town in Holland. It was very nice speaking with them and seeing where they were going next. We walked around and ventured into a few areas that we hadn't seen before. I tried to find a brewery just to the east of Brugge but it appparently isn't there anymore because at the address I had, there was a giant hole filled with construction workers. We went ... read more
