Just back from a lovely weekend in Ghent, Belgium. We headed out on the Eurostar sipping bubbles as we arrived in France. It has been such a dreadful day in London, it was great to see the sun! Only has we departed Brussels did the sun start to go down around 10.30pm. It was the longest day of the year so evenings have been long, however it has been hard to tell given all the rain. And rain was predicted most of the weekend in Belgium as well, not ideal. After convincing Adam it was too far to walk from the train station to our hotel we jumped in a cab and were soon racing towards the canal lined old city. After settling in we headed across the canal to one of the oldest pubs, the ... read more

Back to work again today. Started early with a swim before arriving at work ready for a catch up on e-mails and gossip. At least time flies and it is only a short time before we set off on the first real trip of the year. More last minute packing. It is hard to know what to take as far as clothing is concerned. Checking the long distance weather forecast for continental Europe and watching the BBC weather maps it seems that Northern Europe is suffering with the rain as we are. Perhaps more jumpers will be required rather than T shirts. The better weather seems to be down on Lake Garda where it will be around 23 degrees. Still nothing from the geotagging company. They advised us that they refunded money usually very quickly but ... read more

If ever there was a part of a multi-stage city break for which the term of phrase 'last but not least' best applied, then that accolade could quite easily be awarded to Ghent, which was the 3rd and final Belgian city visited on this tourist itinerary. Getting there was made so simple given the fact that it is on the Brussels - Brugge rail network, therefore a stop-off in Ghent early in the afternoon is literally all it took to be able to sample this Belgian town's set of charms. Upon arrival at the station, a direct tram ride takes the visitor into the town centre, and what is effectively the hub of all tourist activity within the town proper. Ghent is essentially Belgium's prime University student destination, so aside from being blessed with the youthful ... read more

It seems that the only time I have to blog about my trips is during travel for other trips. This posting will be all about my day trip to Gent in Belgium. Every year the town of Gent puts on a light festival for one weekend in January. Shortly after moving to Belgium, I was introduced to a website called “Meetup.com” This site was created by some New Yorkers in order to bring people with similar interests and hobbies together. The nice part is everyone is usually single so there aren’t many couples doing couple things in them. So, I found a Meetup group in Brussels that is for those who love to go out to eat. SCORE! I like food, I like to eat food, I like to have others around me when enjoying food. ... read more

Oh balls. It's been a while again hasn't it? Well in between working on homework, working on legal work at my oppressive law firm downtown, and being run ragged across the countryside I'll admit there hasn't been nearly enough time to do all that I've seen justice. Oh, and if there's one thing I can say for being busy, is that there has been a lot to see. This week I wandered into Amsterdam, den Haag, and a quiet little town that may be only interesting to a handful in the world today, but hopefully I'll be in such fine form I can write about that tomorrow. For today, let's chat the last two weeks. Let’s see, when last we left our hapless intern (me), Ghent, Leuven, and Antwerp were on the horizon so let’s start ... read more

The three cities of Bruges, Antwerp and Gent were always on the radar for visiting. European medieval history cannot be complete without a visit to compare the differences between the Protestant North of Europe with that of Catholic southern Europe. Flemish artworks to be compared with the work of Italian masters, the guild houses, flemish bond brickwork and gabled houses all reminders of North European culture. Gent felt small and fairly compact with easy car parking facilities close to the centre. Tram lines ran along the streets intersecting market squares full of shops selling chocolate and the cafes which spilled onto the streets. Gent proved to be a bicycle heaven with most locals using them as their preferred mode of transport. The cafes proved to be pleasant places to enjoy a coffee The ambience thought felt ... read more

Geo: 51.054, 3.72169i spent a wonderful night and day in Gent with E and her friend T (she brought a friend with her in case i was a fat 50 year old man holding his dick...heehehe)i'm really glad i went to Gent as well and not only Bruges...bruges is entirely picture-perfect and breathtaking, but Gent is real and lived-in, it's loved and appreciated and kept alive by the poeple who breathe it every day...it also gave me a better understanding of belgians (the flemmish, actually) and quite simply, i love them...they seem to be wonderful people with a great style and it's not really something i saw in bruges - i didn't notice it was missing until i saw it in gent...i'll take Gent over Bruges any day (and if anyone is planning on going, uu-huuum ... read more
