Took us six hours to drive up to Steyr, such a beautiful drive through all the mountains and countryside, arrived Steyr around 2.30p.m. and found our hotel, the Mader, such a beautiful hotel, built in 1694, in the middle of the old town of Steyr, the biggest suite we have every had and it overlooked the whole of the square in Steyr! Waiting to meet Mark's brother Pete, who had flown to Norway to meet a mate and they both rode motorbikes, Pete had bought an old BMW,and rode it threw through Scandinavia, Poland, Germany etc to meet up with us in Steyr, they limped in around 3.30p.m. after a long days ride, beers and chats all round! Pete and Mark's friends have all lived in Steyr their whole life, so it was so lovely to ... read more

Day 19 - Steyr, Austria Today was another great day with our Austrian friends. Today we did not meet until 2pm so it gave us a chance to sleep in as we were getting very tired. We slept in until 11 and then woke up to start our day. We had breakfast/lunch at Mcdonalds. Yes, this is not a great choice but it was too hot to eat at a cafe and McDonalds had air conditioning so that is what we chose. To be honest we were pleasently suprised with the McDonalds in Austria. Sydney and I both had the chicken couscous salad which was actually prety tasty. We also had curly fries and as it was a McCafe I had a cafe latte and Syd had a frappe. It was a very nice lunch. The ... read more

Day #17 - Venice to Steyr, Austria We left Venice today with some heavy hearts as we loved the city so much. However, we were also filled with anticipation to meet up with a very dear friend that I met when I did the Camino de Santiago in Spain 2 years ago. In addition to meeting my friend Walter, I was also going to have the honour of meeting his wife and 2 young boys, I was both very nervous and very excited. We have been going in an out of the Alps for several days during our trip but today our drive would take us from the south side of the alps right through to the north side of them. It turned out to be a beautiful drive. The Alps are so much different that ... read more

Day 18 - Steyr, Venice My friend Walter has been gracious enough to tour us around the town of Steyr. Steyr is an incredibly beautiful and interesting town. The first thing you notice when you drive into the city center is the Stadtplatz or town square. It is a beautiful collection of finely retored old buildings. I dont really know hoe old but hundreds and hundreds of years anyways. I do know that the town of Steyr celebrated thier 1000 year anniversary in 1980 so the are at least newer than that. Our hotel is in this area in a restored chalet style buliding. The hotel is nagnificent but all of the staff here hate me. They are all girls dressed up in traditional Austrian dresses but they dont like it when you ask them questions. ... read more

Gros bisous xxxxxxxxxFra ... read more

Eric and I decided to take a good break from society and large cities by having a retreat to the alps. Bad Aussee was just that, it was very relaxing, very nice, and very quiet. And very beautiful. Unfortunately, we got a very good look at the alpine rains, which fell on us every day we were there. On the whole though, it was great. We had spent the previous night in a packed, sweaty hostel in Salzburg, so we were very excited to find that we were among the only guests at the hotel we had in Bad Aussee. It was so empty there, that we actually had breakfast with the hotel staff, and those were the only people we saw that morning. So, we explored the town, and the surrounding area for a few ... read more

Day 34, 4th July. Zidlochovice - Brečlav - Rheintal (AUSTRIA) - Hohenau We all lived through the night and were fit to ride another day. Today we headed south towards Austria passing through Lednice, where I’d been before, along the route. In Breclav it was time to use up the last Czech money and to have a meal before we headed for the miserably staffed border station at Rheintal on the Czech / Austrian border. There was no evidence of the former Iron Curtain or where it had been at all. So we carried on south parallel to the Morava river which forms the border with the Slovak Republic. Austria is expensive, so no money was changed. We ate dinner in a park in Hohenau, a plan so that we didn’t have to bother doing it ... read more
