Cyclists on the border. We didn't have to go through Austria, but it was another country to bag!
Day 34, 4th July.

Zidlochovice - Brečlav - Rheintal (AUSTRIA) - Hohenau

We all lived through the night and were fit to ride another day. Today we headed south towards Austria passing through Lednice, where I’d been before, along the route. In Breclav it was time to use up the last Czech money and to have a meal before we headed for the miserably staffed border station at Rheintal on the Czech / Austrian border. There was no evidence of the former Iron Curtain or where it had been at all. So we carried on south parallel to the Morava river which forms the border with the Slovak Republic. Austria is expensive, so no money was changed. We ate dinner in a park in Hohenau, a plan so that we didn’t have to bother doing it when free-camping. A spot was found by a couple of weird old empty houses which had been long deserted. Lots of belongings and photos were lying around leading us to believe that the places may have housed refugees. It was like being a detective to figure out what went on here. In one house, every room was full of dismantled pub game machines

In Austria. Slovakia is just to the right, beyond the trees and over a river.
and reams of official looking documents. We set up our tents in the back garden out of sight. Rory and Toby drank beer again, that’s every night so far in the Czech Republic, I wonder if they’re becoming alkies or when they’re going to run out of money… soon perhaps?

Day 35, 5th July.

Hohenau - Hainburg - Berg - Bratislava (SLOVAKIA)

Toby’s getting good at waking early and packing up, we were away for half-seven heading south on the Austrian side of the Morava river with no Austrian currency and no breakfast. At Marchegg we stopped to cook up noodles and drink Maté tea which gave us energy. Rory spotted my first tick on the back of my knee and removed it efficiently. At Hainburg the Danube was crossed and we followed the zig-zagging cycle way to Pressburg / Bratislava, in Slovak. The border was busy and took a bit of time to cross. Scott changed his Czech Crowns into Slovak ones, and then we were in Slovakia.

We crossed the big ‘Flying Saucer’ style bridge and headed directly into

Everybody expects Austria to be all mountains... but in eastern Austria it's just fields of sunflowers.
the old part of town for a beer to celebrate our achievement before heading for the camp site - Zlaté Piésky, which I’d been to twice beforehand. It was much the same, cheap and tacky. We had more beers and food then Rory hired a ‘Pedalo’ and we went on the lake - pissed! Great fun, diving in the water, making fools of ourselves. We drank more - into the darkness. Later, I had a nice long shower before crashing out for the night.
