Great to see you posting again. Hi Andy. I followed your last "memorablog" from start to finish. Wished I was young enough to do the same (though I always hated cycling, so I probably wouldn't, even given the opportunity!).
I'm writing my own blog from my diary notes. I get so caught up in the travelling that I don't have time to go and find an internet connection to upload my blog each day/week. In fact, the longer between blogs, the harder it gets to catch up.
I am trying to persuade TB to host a separate forum where cyclists and motorcyclists can share their experience and knowledge. I'll let you know how things go.
John
Welcome back to blogging... I look forward to reading about your adventures. I appreciate you taking the time to write about your past travels. I know how it is because I spent all of 2011 scanning 5000 slides and prints and writing 170 blogs (175,000 words) for all my travels since I was conceived in China in 1949. I did it as a legacy for my family, but soon discovered that my Travelblog family was more interested than they were. Perhaps someday they will appreciate the effort.
repair diacritics If you type the name of the city so at least correctly, it may not indicate the hooks with letters. Brečlav not exist!
Židlochovice - Břeclav - Rheintal (AUSTRIA) - Hohenau
Not swastikas Just a quick FYI... those are not Nazi-style swastikas you were seeing, but rather a sacred Buddhist symbol that now has a rather unfortunate association with the Third Reich. Sad that such a wonderful symbol used for so long in such a peaceful philosophy has been desecrated by Hitler's hate.

camping info Hello; really enjoyed your photos. I'm thinking of visiting Moldova next fall and I'd love to try camping. Did you have much experience with public campgrounds and if so what can you tell me about facilities and safety as I will be on my own. Any web sites that you can recommend? Thanks for any info you can provide.
Oh hii there. It's a beautifull article.
I'm proud I'm from Transylvania.
I think this is an olt article because that "Romaninian Lei" it's no more 10.000 now it's only 1 :).
Oh anyway good luck.
Wow! I'm from the U.S.A. and live in the city. I've been to Yellow Stone National Park. There was a bear less than 25 feet away from my family and I and yet your story sounds crazier! It's so cool your able to do that stuff.
I married the Toxic Texan! Andy,
I thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog. Truly amazing experience. It was wonderful seeing you guys again in July. You all have a very special bond. You and Mechthild must come visit us in Texas! We will cure you of this ‘vegetarianism’!
Best,
Sarah
An Update - "Where are we now (2009)" Hi, this is Andy Ganner, writer of the travelblog you're commenting about. May I say, what a fantastic response from everyone, I'm so happy that my inane scribblings gave so much joy to many of you. As for me, I'm still cycling, done some nice big trips but have yet to enter them in Travelblog. As for the other guys:
TOBY got married to his Taiwanese sweetheart in Taipei last week.
RORY will get married in 2 weeks time. I'll be over in England for the wedding.
NICK will get married next year to his Swedish girlfriend and live in Sweden with her. He's also coming to Rory's wedding having sailed from his home in Montreal to England, the yacht is moored, noe he's walking to Leicester from the coast!
SCOTT has now been happily married for the last 3 year, has grown a Dennis Hopper (Easy Rider) style moustache, and also a big gut! He will also be at the wedding.
STEPHANE has dissapeared somwhere in the Arctic!
LESLIE, who joined us on the trip for the first few weeks, just can't stop having babies... last I heard, she'd got three.
And finally... ME,... I'm still living in Germany with no plans to marry... distant lands are still calling me, my wheels are itching to take to the road again. At 45, I'm still fit and capable of doing distance. Golf and coach tours are still many years away....
I hope to make a proper blog entry soon.
Thanks for your support...
ANDY "BIKEPACKER"
I'm the edge of my seat I've come back to the blog after losing the address for over a year. I came across the address again and am really enjoying reading this blog. This is almost to good to be a movie. You guys need a screenwriter to write this into a movie. I'm constantly on the edge of my seat!!!
Icing on the Cake First I was going to say that the 2001 Bike Odyssey Bikepacker blog was hands down the best travelblog on the site- then another comment got me thinking, it probably is the most amazing travelblog yet! It wasnt a travelblog about a 2 week vacation from work, it wasnt a "round the world" trip that composes 85% of travelblogs, it wasnt a travelblog about living in a particular foreign place. It was an amazing thing what you guys did! This blog entry is like icing on a very rich cake though- I think the most fascinating part of all great stories is the whole "where are they now" thing! Amazing to see how people change, and are changed, by travelling. Thanks for the post!
Hello Hello guys, looking forward to seeing half of you soon, the other half as soon as possible. Toby
btw, Rosey was not one of my students, much as Andy would like to believe. It was much more interesting than that! But, I'm sure there are many more details I could take issue with, if I were that kind of guy... Judge for yourselves!
Hello again I did your trip on google earth. Every story. Every Point. I can't wait to do my trip in china in september. I am really impressed about your trip. more than 100 mile a day. wow! Lets see whats happend. Sylvia
I start reading today I did the same. I started reading in china November last year. Then I red here and there.... Today I'll start from the beginning. In september I'will fly with my bike to china again.... I'll let you what's happen.
Small world Regarding that Ben guy you met...I've read the books about their adventures. Written by Colin Angus, "Amazon Extreme" and "Lost In Mongolia" are the stories of their rafting trips along the Amazon and Yenisey rivers. Not really well written, but exciting and adventureous nonetheless. The fact that you met him on your trip is pretty cool...
Hi! I'm Andy Ganner, known as the "BIKEPACKER". Meaning I put everything on my bike; tent, cooker, clothes, food, tent, and sleeping bag... and just set off on an adventure.
Been doing it nearly 20 years and have hand-written journals for every trip from my RTW backpacking trip of 1986, up to present.
Over the next years I'll be publishing my "Memorablogs" of these trips. It will take time as there are many slides to scan, I only went digital in 2009.
You can already read the epic England to Singapore trip: 2001 a Bike Odyssey, now. It's all there, word for word from my written jour... full info
