After some discussion with Catherine regarding possibilities for the day we figured that we would try the Feuerkogel mountain despite the webcam showing quite a lot of cloud. We had wanted to go up here all week and it was now or never so off we went. The Feuerkogel Seilbahn we've been on before but I never realised how freaky it was. We've been up on many Seilbahns and gondolas but I wasn't too shook on being suspended so high over a very deep valley. Usually they are steeply uphill or not so high off the ground but this one travels across two high valleys up to 1585m suspended only by one wire. It doesn't bear thinking about sometimes. At the top we wanted to do a loop walk but they were either too long or ... read more

The forecast was for a good day in the morning but not so sure about the afternoon, so the Langbath Lakes looked like a good option. It was a warm day with a very warm breeze blowing. The skies were clear and the lakes looked stunning with their mountain background. The Langbath lakes are 8 km from Ebensee and sit in an open basin. They are very popular with walkers, cyclists and bathers. We bought a picnic lunch of rolls, ham, bananas, Snickers bars, apples and a drink and set off around the lakes. The bottom lake is the larger and is a lovely acqua colour with clear water. It is surrounded by forest with wide walking paths. Despite it being Thursday there were still a lot of walkers, hikers and swimmers out and about enjoying ... read more

Today was a travel day from Ortisei to Ebensee in the Salzkammergut Lake District of Austria, not far from Salzburg. The drive out of Val Gardena was as hair raising as driving in. The road is narrow and winding, the walls on the mountain side seem to be right by the passenger seat and it seems too fast downhill. Maybe I'm losing my nerve but those walls being so close to the side of the road had me leaning towards the driver. Once onto the autostrada driving is more straight forward but all the way to the Brenner Pass was heavy traffic, often slowed to a crawl, and with many trucks - and this was a Saturday. Strangely, the shortest route to Ebensee was up to Innsbruck, into Germany towards Rosenheim, then back into Austria by ... read more

After getting thoroughly wet yesterday, today is a beautiful clear, sunny and warm day. What a contrast! Our fellow cyclists from Arizona have finished their cycling holiday and left this morning. They will be replaced by another 2 people who weare yet to meet, but it will be fleeting as we leave for Obertraun tomorrow. After yesterday's long distance we decided on something a little shorter today, but unfortunately all uphill for the first part (so much for easy). Since it was sunny and likely to be hot we decided to take the Seilbahn (Cable Car) up to the Feuerkogl in the morning, a peak at 1600m which was along our intended route. I gather the name Feure refers to fire or hell - not sure why. On arriving at the top and marvelling at the ... read more

As the title says, it was wet, bloody wet AND we got lost! A brief respite though, with a little sun in between rain. As I did not want to do 70kms today, I took the train to Bad Ischl while Lindsay biked the 18km. By the time he arrived it started to rain - a big black cloud rolling in from the lake. We sat it out by having coffee and cake at the station and then put on our wet weather gear and heading out towards Lake St Wolfgang. We biked through undulating farmland with huge houses with barns attached. It was a very pretty area to bike through and quiet. St Wolfgang was a whole different story. It is a tourist town and there were bus loads of Asians and Oldies everywhere. I'm ... read more

After spending time Skyping my sister and getting all the Taranaki news, we set off for Gmunden which is down the other end of the Traunsee (Lake Traun). The weather was looking dicey so we loaded the pannier with our rain gear and lunches and a back pack for incidentals. It was also cold, much the same temps as we had been having at home before we left. On the way we passed the village of Traunkirchen which we visited 2 days ago and continued on the R2 bike path. It is a well marked biking path wide enough for 2 abreast on concrete or asphalt so it's pretty easy going. Close to Gmunden is a promontory covered with lovely trees and the building for Central Congress and the Land Castle Ort. Over a long wooden ... read more

Linds has found that his bike gives him sore wrists so another was to come from Obertraun (where we'll be in a few days). While we waited for the bike we headed off to explore Ebensee and do a circuit around the river on foot. The path we thought we'd take was washed out so we walked the road up the river to a bridge then back through farms and little lanes back to Rosenhof. By which time it was midday. Catherine had made our lunches to have at the house or take with us. We opted for half in half - some now, some later. We are certainly getting a nice selection in our lunch bags - filled rolls, fruit, a muesli bar and a fruit drink. We then sorted out the new bikes. They ... read more

Time to move on from Salzburg. It's another lovely day so we filled in the time until pickup by doing a circuit of the river and as we arrived back the driver taking us to Ebensee (Aybensee) had arrived. It was a hour and a half's journey in one very hot vehicle as the air conditioning only worked in the front. We thought that running the inside vehicle temperature at 35 would be a good practice for the Froudes going to Bangkok! However, despite the heat, the driver was friendly and informative. He eventually found the address at Ebensee and it seemed we wound our way through the whole town. On reflection, we did because we're at the back end from the lake. We're now settled into Gasthof Rosenhof which is a large modern guest house ... read more

Glg Martin ... read more
