After some discussion with Catherine regarding possibilities for the day we figured that we would try the Feuerkogel mountain despite the webcam showing quite a lot of cloud. We had wanted to go up here all week and it was now or never so off we went. The Feuerkogel Seilbahn we've been on before but I never realised how freaky it was. We've been up on many Seilbahns and gondolas but I wasn't too shook on being suspended so high over a very deep valley. Usually they are steeply uphill or not so high off the ground but this one travels across two high valleys up to 1585m suspended only by one wire. It doesn't bear thinking about sometimes.
At the top we wanted to do a loop walk but they were either too long or too short so we opted to walk to a peak called Helmskogel at 1687m rather than the popular Europkogel where we'd been before. The mountains in this area are very rugged limestone like the top of the Takaka Hill only more of it and completely bare of vegetation in some places. It almost looks like snow. The path wound downhill for a while then
past sinkholes and a karst landscape up to 1687m where there is a huge cross and further along a viewing platform right on the edge of the mountain. I was fine with my vertigo until the narrow track to the viewing area had no sides with a drop on either side. Not good for me, but fine for Linds. The views out over Traunsee and Ebensee were fantastic even though the cloud was patchy and obscured the view. We sat and listened to the "Sounds of Silence" (Simon and Garfunkel). It was absolutely quiet and divinely peaceful.
Back at Feuerkogel we had lunch in the Edelweiss Restaurant which was surprisingly full. I guess it was because it is Saturday and more people are out and about. We did the European thing and had our main meal of the day and had a light meal in the evening.
We returned to Ebensee to Rosenhof to drop off our gear and then head out for a walk around part of the town on the walkway which took us through Roith, over to a bridge over the Traun River and back down the walkway along the river. On arrival back at
Rosenhof we were greeted by Catherine with some fresh out of the oven, ginger cake. Perfect with a cup of tea.
So ends our six week holiday. We'll pack our bags for the last time (hooray), and do a boat trip on Lake Traun (Traunsee) tomorrow before heading to Vienna Airport and heading home at 11pm. That will be the most boring part of the holiday. Air travel is not nice but a means to an end.
What was the highlight of the holiday, Linds asked today. I didn't really know because there was so much that was memorable. The cycle trip was great despite the heat on the first week. Being in Italy was excellent too especially being able to attend Diego's wedding. The Val Gardena was really lovely and a highlight. Having Irvahn to stay with us was special. Returning here to Ebensee was great too as there was so much we hadn't done last time. For that matter, anyone wanting to come to a lovely part of Austria in the lake district, come to the Rosenhof B&B where you are central and the hospitality is excellent - http://rosenhof-austria.com
