The Austrian home of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Graz is a beautiful city nestled in the foothills of the Styrian Alps. It is Austria’s second largest city, and has a lot to offer. We decided yet again to make use of the 11 euro Saturday train tickets and make our way south. After a beautiful train ride that winded through the mountains and into long tunnels, we were finally there, and choose to spend our day like most other day trips; walking and sitting in the sun. Our hike through town led us into the main square, which crosses past the awesome river front. The best view of the city was had on top of the cliff, which houses the towns’ big clock. From there, you can see the whole city, and the mountains in the distance. The ... read more

Field trip to Niederösterreich, where we got to see Klosterneuberg. Kloster means monestary, but unfortunately I didnt see any monks. The place was founded back in the days of the Babenburgs as part of one of those 'monestaries with a built in palace' deals, presumably so that God will forgive you if youre completely corrupt. Anyway, it became the obsession of Charles VI of the house of Habsburg, (a Habsburg in the 17th century), who tried to make it into a huge baroque thing out of it. The monks here apparently are the largest single producer of wine in Austria, so the whole monestary smells like... a lot of wine is being made. Following this, we went to a .. i guess 'restored' castle nearby. It wasn't really 'restored' so much as just plain built out ... read more

On the weekend of October 21-22, we made an overnight trip to Graz, Austria. This trip was arranged by Central College for us students studying here in Vienna, so all we had to do was pack our bags and enjoy the ride! What a way to travel. :-) Saturday morning we were up bright and early to catch our train. The train ride there was in itself a pleasure. We traveled through the hillsides, in amongst the trees, all of which were changing colors. It was a gorgeous sight. Upon arrival in Graz, we found our hostel and unloaded our bags. After we grabbed some lunch, we made our way to the Tourist Information office, where we met our guide for the day’s tour. We joined a larger group of people and all hopped onto a ... read more

But which border is the question? :) Not towards the spring break strongholds of Cancun or Rocky Point, but - Slovenia! Lindsay and I are going to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, hopefully to be followed by some sunshine on the Istrian coast, and then over the Adriatic to Italy for a few days in Venice. First stop - before leaving Austria - Graz, a beautiful town in the south. The day we left, we had coffee with my roommate, and she had lots of good recommendations of stuff to do and see. We had trouble getting out of Vienna, just barely missed the train we were supposed to take, but it was a-ok, the weather was great so we went and sat in the backyard of the Belvedere Palace, ate sandwiches and played music. Today I decided it was time for me to speak my mind. Usually when I am confronted with a controversial topic, I tend to let the other person speak their mind, and if I disagree, I usually just keep quiet. I've been here in this small Austrian town now for about 7 months, and frankly that's too long for me to let people make perpetually offensive/racist comments and let them go on with their lives without thinking that they had said anything offensive. Im Gegenteil! Tonight I was horribly offended by the dinner conversation. For Easter Break I intend to travel through the former Yugoslavia with 2 other people, both whom I would describe as highly intelligent. I would never step into such a foreign realm without being sure that I was in safe accompaniment. We ... read more

Last week I found a big itchy red boil on my belly. Being the hypochondriac that I am, I immediately asked Hanna what it was that night at dinner. She said, in her assuring Austrian way (this lady is ALWAYS right, and when she's not right, she STILL is) that it was just a "Fleckerl" that I caught from a virus that her grandchildren had. I was puzzled, for I had not spent a minute with those children for over a week, but instead of objecting and in turn receiving a confusing explanation in thick Weststeirisch dialect, I zipped it. For the next few days I'd notice the Fleckerl in the mirror and wonder if it would ever go away. Sometimes it itched, which made me worry, but then I assured myself that it wasn't so ... read more

I like day-outings. They are less stressful than vacations. You leave in the morning and sleep in your bed at night, content that you had a nice day. Today was one of those. I was invited to go skiing with the Volksschule Alleestrasse (I am an English teacher every Friday), which means it was me, a bunch of parents and teachers, and of course, the little ones ranging from the 2. Klasse to the 4. Klasse. Hirschegg is a small ski area with a few Tellerlifts and one Sessellift (chair lift). We didn't use the chair lift today, because the kids weren't ready for it. At 8:30 we headed off and came back around 2:00. We had fine weather, the snow was great, and the kids were sweet. I even got to lead the group I ... read more
