So now we are in Austria! have had a few issues getting to internet cafes but were here now. Since Venice we have made our way to Slovenia where we went to Lake Bled and hired a row boat to get ourselves to the church in the center of the turquoise water. Was a lovely drive from Italy with the mountains around capped with snow. Loved Bled but have moved onwards and upwards heading in the direction of Zug, Switzerland. Enjoy the pics, they say thing better than I. Love... read more

When we met them, Birgit and Lukas had just finished a large trip around Australia and had also done a similar trip five years earlier. This time however, Birgit added South East Asia to their itinerary and fortunately this meant that they ran into us on the beach in Cambodia. They were staying at the same hotel as us and over the course of a few days we became firm friends. Ten year old Lukas played with Phoebe so nicely and the both of them were happy for the company of another child. Meanwhile, we really enjoyed Birgit's company, and busily compared notes about travelling with children, and sharing other experiences and thoughts as well. When they said they'd also be going to Vietnam we decided to meet up again and spent 2 more weeks enjoying ... read more

I know where I am and I'm still 45 miles behind schedule. Turns out yesterday was more like 55 behind, so some gain today. Went over the Passo Stalle into Austria as on the map climbing 1,000m over 17km seemed reasonable, until after 5km I still was yet to do any climbing and had if anything gone downhill. Once it got going, my god! Beautiful though. Finished after sunset, following the Drau River. 250 miles left in 2 days...... read more

Europe » Austria » Carinthia » Villach July 16th 2009

Well it was time to finally leave Munderfing and my good friends Rod and Jess....hic......sob.... I was especially going to miss all the lovely road signs of the area. However I was blessed with one last look at 'Pfaffing' as we drove to the train station. Jessie was a sweetheart and drove me to the train station in Salzburg where I caught the 12:12 train to Villach, where I had decided to spend the next couple of nights. There really was no rhyme nor reason to my decision to visit Villach, except for the fact that it happens to be on the main train route to LJubljana which was going to be my next stop on my travels. So this is the reason that I found myself hopping off a train at Villach Hauptbahnhof. And what ... read more

4th of July dearies! And I'm in beautiful Austria. Happy Independence day to all of the Americans. Today, other than eating breakfast and watching a movie, I'm taking the bus to go the lake. Ironman Austria is tomorrow and everyone around here is doing it. I'm going to watch it to support my family. They swim through a lake and canal, bike through steep hills, and finish it up with a run. I couldn't do it, that's for sure! The people here speak German, but I'm lucky since many British and American folks have come to enter the Ironman. ... read more

Day 19 (Tuesday, September 23rd) Today was our last day in Slovenia. After eating breakfast and checking out of the hotel, we began the drive north towards Austria. As was the case with all of our prior entrances into new countries, no passport check was completed at the border. Sometimes, it seems as though there is a similar mentality between countries in Europe as there is in the States; they just wave you on in. It was raining in Lake Bled, but by the time we got to Klagenfurt, Austria, the rain had stopped and the sun was trying to come out. Klagenfurt is the provincial capital of the Carinthia, which encompasses the southern region of Austria. The town is of medium size in terms of population (about 90,000) and offers visitors many beautiful squares and ... read more

Europe » Austria » Carinthia » Greifenburg August 18th 2008

After a little more than one week at home doing some work and seeing my family and friends, I drove to Greifenburg on Tuesday to participate in the DHV Junior and Ladies Challenge. That is a competition for female and young male pilots (not older than 28) that is made up to introduce them to competition flying. I arrived in Greifenburg late on Tuesday night and met the other pilots on Wednesday morning. There was only one more girl, Tina, and three more boys, Jakob, Moritz, and Peter. Matthias, the organizer, had decided to fly in the comp as well, so we were six pilots altogether. That is not much - the paragliding Junior and Ladies Challenge usually has around 80 pilots! I had brought my little Club 15 with me and was really happy that ... read more

Drove back to St Poltein to find our friendly hardware store to buy an adaptor for our power cord, and by the time we found our way out again we had decided to only drive to the outskirts of Vienna today as we would not have enough time to see anything. So we hunted around for a camping ground or info centre without any success until about 7pm when we came across a bit of a forest which we could drive into quite easily so we tucked ourselves away from the road and parked. We still had plenty of light left to make dinner and have a little stroll through the forest before bed. After an undisturbed sleep(apart from a little rain and wind in the trees) we had breakfast and headed for the capital. ... read more

I must say that as I stay in Austria longer, I become more and more impressed. To update my readers of my travels in this beautiful country I will start from the 25th. The 25th I did a whole lot of nothing. I slept most of the day nursing a bit of an upset stomach (draw your own conclusions) Because I had stayed up the night before tazen (dancing) with Anna and Mateja I was very tired. RANT (Pardon me Techno lovers, but Techno really sucks when you take a GOOD hip hop/r&b song and put it to the house DJ's favorite feel good alternative hit. Flo-Rida and Coldplay should never be combined ever again.) The next morning Mateja, Anna, Marjeta, and I were greeted by Mateja's friend Nora who brought us a breakfast of ... read more
