I thought we were taking a stroll through the woods. That was my suggestion. I dutifully put on my hiking shoes and we set off. We descended 250 metres to a small lake, the highlight for me was walking through an Austrian farm. At the lake we stopped for cake and coffee in a quaint hamlet. Yes, it was good to see the country side. Then we began the long climb back up 250 metres on endless switch-back roads that rose above the large lake below. What a workout! I will not feel guilty sitting four hours on a train tomorrow. It was lovely walking through the mountain forests. We found a large mushroom that is one of the best kinds. I think we are having it with supper tonight. Later, we did have the mushroom ... read more

I have made a goal to have at least one Servas visit per country so that I can become acquainted with the real culture and not just the tourist attractions. I am staying in a lovely house near Klagenfurt, a house built after careers abroad, and in my mind the design and detail are perfect. It has me thinking about my house and perhaps a few tweaks I could do. The views of the mountains are lovely from every window and balcony. I forgot how changeable mountain slopes can be as light changes throughout the day and evening, or when clouds and mist move by. When I arrived yesterday my hosts took me to a tower to get 360 degree view of the area. The train journey here was delightful through mountains and valleys. Pure pleasure ... read more

Somewhat irritated this morning to find that there was still rain about though last night’s forecast was for a completely dry day. The latest forecast, useless thing, was saying it was going to stay wet most of the morning. Fortunately it was wrong and we ignored it, apart from ensuring we had our macs in sacs in Kisbee’s backbox, just in case. Kisbee came out of the garage all-raring to go as it enjoys a nice flat road round a lake where it can get a bit of speed up. Some of the mountainous inclines we take it on are quite a challenge as between us we are up to its weight limit ! Had to return briefly, after we set off, to retrieve a sweater for Bob. On the back I’m generally pretty well protected ... read more

Heading back West today and pleased to see when we got up that the sky was blue again. The first hour or so of the drive was fine and dry and we had some lovely mountain views as we went along. Last night’s rather violent storm had blown itself away over a mountain somewhere. We took the motorway for the first 40 or so miles to get well clear of Graz and over a couple of mountains the easier way, some of that meaning going through tunnels. Then we left the motorway and carried on a normal road. Not gone very far when the low cloud we had seen ahead hanging about on the mountain tops decided to lower itself even further so we had a wet drive for the last half of the trip. It ... read more

After spending so much time carefully planning our route through Austrian Alps, we're disappointed by the heavy rains during our lunch hour break. We decide to retire to a hotel early and try again tomorrow. Managing risk is an important part of any trip and especially on a motorcycle. The heavy rain turned into a lighting storm followed by gale force winds and snow.... read more

So, from Slovenia we drove to Austria. When we were going to Austria we went through a very LONG tunnel. And the start of that very long tunnel, my dad told me to hold my breath but I could not and I did not try. So we got to Austria I was very happy, do you know why? It was my 60th country and it was very pretty. Then we went to an outdoor restaurant which was very good. We ordered Schnitzel, Sausage, and after that we ordered Strudel(for me). Hey guess what? They all start with an 's'. My absolute favorite was the strudel because it had a side of whoop cream. (I know it is whipped cream, but I say whoop) LOL. Then we checked out a cool church and took a couple selfiies. ... read more

After a fairly peaceful night apart from some motorway noise we headed off in the direction of Munich and the southerly ring road. A road that neither of us had travelled before. We fed the resident ducks before we left and tried the showers which were excellent. Clean and tidy and functional. The day was still dull but it wasnt raining yet. A few miles down the road it started again. Just a sprinkling but enough to make us think yet again will the damn wet stuff never stop. The skies were grey and full of clouds which threatened more rain. Deer grazed in the fields alongside the autobahn oblivious of the early morning traffic . At 9 the sun broke through. Cars raced past as we skirted Munich and headed for Lake Chiemsee. The roadsides ... read more

Wow! One whole month. Time is a funny thing. I feel like I have been here forever, but I am so sad to think I only have 8 more months to go. I am very happy here. I have made new friends, I know my way around (as best as possible with my directionality handicap), and I have time to think. Plus, I am playing volleyball, which is what I love to do. This week is a week of firsts...Tomorrow I have my first official German lesson. It's been hard feeling helpless in most conversations, but hopefully that will change soon. This weekend is also our first official match. We play at home against Melk and I am so excited! We have been training hard and the team is coming together nicely. I posted a picture ... read more

I had my first true yoga experience today. Atlantis - the official Wildcat's fitness center - offers classes every day. What a fun, relaxing work out. I am sure I will go back. The classes have funny names and themes. Whitney and I went to "Earth Flow Yoga" today... It was very dynamic, and a good first experience. Next on the list to try is "Yoga Loves Music." I'm sharing some photos of the gym itself. It's cluttered and colorful - besides the dolphins and buddhas, we find dozens of pictures of young, buff Arnold, and people doing yoga poses, and prayer flags, and flowers galore... you name it. Even posters of yoga cats and dogs. The plan is to get a solid routine going... weight lifting a couple times a week and yoga so that ... read more

A day in the life... For those of you who may not know, I moved to Austria to play volleyball. I still love the sport after four years of collegiate ball, and fortunately my body is still healthy enough to endure a few more swings, bruises and soreness. But I also came with the expectation to travel as much as possible within Europe and to emerse myself in a different culture. I've spent most of my life in the developing world (Argentina and Brasil); I lived in New Mexico for the past four years, and am now enjoing seeing the world through the eyes of another developed country. I view this year of living and playing abroad as an opportunity to learn some more about myself. During my high school and college days I was always ... read more
