Puerto Rico and Culebra again. We drove to San Juan to pick Bruce up from the airport…we got so lost coming back, it was about 11.20pm and we did seem to have strayed into a dodgy end of the sprawling city. We stopped by a police car which was stopping another car; Bruce jumped out and told him we were sooo lost. Very kindly he said follow me, and with the siren and lights on we were escorted across the city to the right road. Every hundred yards, there was a police car with some people spread-eagled across the bonnets, and hands up on the roof. We did find the road to Humanacoa, and finally Palmas del mar. It was good to get back, they came with a golf cart for Bruce’s bag and we were ... read more

We spent a week in gorgeous St. John. This was our first trip to the Caribbean. The water has indescribable beauty and warmth. It is spectacular in so many ways. We were blessed with great opportunity to photograph a friends wedding and stay with all the family for our week stay on the island. We lived a life style that most dream of. Our accommodations were sprawling gigantic villas with sweeping views overlooking blue lagoon bays and on out to the British Virgin Islands. The weather was pretty hot and humid which I think is normal for the time of year (mid July). The best time spent was cooling off and chillin' in the water. The bugs are abundant and like to eat you alive, but you don’t realize it until your home getting ready for ... read more

After all the commotion of St. Thomas, such a big port town, we were ready to get back to St. John again. So we set sail, well not literally because we still have no main sail, but that is another story for another blog. More accurately we motored on to Leinster Bay, only 5 miles away on the north side of the island. Luckily all the islands here in the USVI and BVI are incredibly close together so it was a short trip. Not only can you see the next island in the chain, but almost all of the islands in the Virgins are visible from any vantage point- it is amazing. And the best part is that moving around from island to island only takes an hour or two, maybe even less, and it is ... read more

The island of St. John is very different than the other USVI in that it is a National Park. Roughly two thirds of the island is protected and therefore pristine. There are no houses, hotels, shops, or restaurants within the park boundary. The anchorages are tucked into natural bays, in the shadow of the lush mountainside with beautiful beaches and deep aquamarine water- absolutely gorgeous. The National Park was expanded in 2001 to include the surrounding reefs and seabeds. In fact the park service provides mooring balls for boaters to use which help alleviate the damage from anchoring. Thus the snorkeling in St. John is great and fish and turtles swim right up to the boat- how awesome. We really loved our time here. We had been here on a cruise before, not much has changed, other than there seems to be more boats. We anchored outside, between the 2 islands. Was quite bouncy, as the ferries don not slow down, back and forth, come and go. We left Cheetah II and Non Linear and headed for Virgin Gorda. ... read more

So we woke up early and made it back to St. John with very few problems other than late taxis and delayed ferries. We went back to this place called Shela's Pot for lunch and some local flavor. It was recommended to us by our fellow group siters back at Cinnamon Bay after we'd complained we hadn't had a real Caribbean meal, and it did not disappoint. It's basically a small stand on the main square in Cruz Bay, a stone's throw from the ferry dock, with a little woman in a white cap behind it serving unbelievable home-made food. The first time we had lobster stew, the second time conch stew - always served heaping with all kinds of fixings. One lunch (stew, potato salad, seasoned rice, mac and cheese, veggies) costs $12 - we ... read more

John 1:1 In the beginning was the word, and the word was good. St. John is paradise, if you are into the whole rum drinks under swaying coconut palms on tropical white sand beaches thing, which we discovered we are after studying in the cold February mountains of Virginia! We had a free ticket on Spirit Air and I knew that I loved the Virgin Islands, it was the best family vaction we ever took. So I was excited to camp at Cinammon Bay in the Virgin Islands National Park on St. John. (I convinced Martina it was better than flying to Minnapolis in February for a Proust reading or going to a feline fancier symposium in Iowa. She aquiested to camping when I explained to her that a tan would cut down on instances of ... read more

We had one whirlwind day on St. John. Really we're cutting things way too short on this beautiful island, but 10 days is all we had allocated for the Caribbean, and we can't change the dates on our first US leg per rules of the around-the-world ticket. The four of us began the day with an early trip to Trunk Bay and leftover baked goods from Havensight Bakery. Trunk Bay, along with Magen's on St. Thomas are routinely rated in the top 10 beaches in the world. Most of St. John is a national park, donated about 50 years ago by Rockefeller, who owned nearly the whole island at one time. We arrived at Trunk just before 9AM, when the park ranger arrives and begins charging for entry. Aside from two people swimming, the entire beach ... read more

I spent a little over a month work on St.John at Maho Bay. It was a great time with some great people, I really miss all of you! Jill dropped everything she was doing in the states, charged her card and came down to backpack the BVI with me for 2 weeks. I have more pics, but I'm really sick of looking at this computer screen! ... read more
