Already so much has happened since I last wrote it's hard to remember what we've done. We're really almost never home! This last little while we went on 3 trips and were gone from the city for 7 of the last 10 days, usually without electricity or water. Our first trip was to the city of Chitre in the Cocle region, and the second trip was to the indigenous village of Ipeti-Embera (Embera is the name of the group of people there). While Chitre was interesting and more relaxing, it paled in comparison to the days with the Embera. There we were welcomed to the village with warm smiles and the children clambering all over us and wanting to play. We shared meals with the people in the town and stayed in a hut in the ... read more

!Hola! Finally a sunday afernoon to send out some news. We've been go go go since we arrived, hardly sleeping at home so I have little time to get on the net! Classes started monday and we had our one and only lecture in a classroom, making groups and talking about our projects and papers for this first class we have, called Environmental History of Panama. Tuesday we took off for a 2-day trip in the mountains in the West in the province of Veraguas, leaving at 6am. We travelled to a sugar cane plantation and an old abandoned Canadian mine site and received lectures in spanish from people who work or had worked there. We stayed in a little mountain town called Santa Fe for the night and spent the whole next day there talking ... read more

!Hola todos! I'm here alive in beautiful and HOT Panama City. We got in late saturday night after 1am and after sorting out immigration at the airport the 15 of us that had the same flight were picked up by a bus that took us the 40-min drive to our little part of the city. There's 5 houses of 6 people each (26 McGilligans and 4 Panamanians) and they're actually huge and really nice! Our professor had stocked our fridges with beer and some food so we had a little kitchen party, unpacked a bit and crashed. I slept with no sheets and the windows fully open and a fan on blast and was just cool enough to sleep. Today we woke up and ate fresh watermelon, coconut and drank fresh fruit juice in the sun ... read more

Como no quiero gastar ... read more

We wanted to spend some more time in Panama but we had already spent way more time in Central America and we were eager to reach Colombia. In Panama City we explored the old city which was destroyed by Captain Henry Morgan in the 1600s. Some of it had been rebuilt but there were a lot of buildings with collapsed floors either filled with garbage or quite contrastingly, plants and trees. Everywhere you looked there were stark contrasts. You would see a fine dining restaurant next to an ancient abandoned building, and next to that an equally decrepit crumbling building but with several families living in it. As beautiful as it was, it was quite a dangerous area where we could not go out at night. A group of 15 big guys were robbed at gunpoint ... read more

Today we switched guest houses as we have arranged a boat trip for tomorrow in which we will be picked up from Mamallena's Hostel at 5am. We will be taking a sailboat from Panama City to the San Blas Islands where we will spend a few days and ultimately end up in Cartagena, Colombia. It is quite an expensive trip so hopefully it will be worth it (it has been highly recommended by several travelers we have spoken to). So for the next 5 days or so we will be sailing, snorkeling and exploring the islands. I hope I don't get sea sick - I have never sailed before. This afternoon we went to 'Casco Viejo' (the Old Compound). It is a beautiful part of the city with several old buildings, statues and churches. We wondered ... read more

Today we took a cab to the Panama Canal. Unfortunately our timing was off and we waited for over an hour with no signs of any boats passing through. Finally, a couple of very large boats approached so we were able to get pictures but had to leave before we actually saw one pass through the locks. We also made the mistake of cheaping out and only buying tickets for the observation deck for $5 instead of the $8 general admission which meant missing out on the 3-story museum and the theater. So if you ever take a trip to the Panama Canal, just pay the extra $3 - this is not the time to get cheap, especially when you may be waiting an hour and a half for a boat to arrive. Tonight we learned ... read more

We arrived in Panama City last night around 5:30 after a very long bus ride. Fortunately, the bus itself was good, comfortable, clean and the people were friendly. (Recommendation: Tica Bus). Crossing the border from Costa Rica into Panama was a frustrating experience that took 5 hours. First we arrived at 5am - 1 hour before the offices opened. Then the computer system stopped working and the officials refused to do things by hand despite having the ability to do so. Lineups were long and the local people did not care to wait in line like the majority of us tourists so they just pushed their way in front. The whole thing was quite a scene as the local media even showed up to report on it. So we are finally here and staying at the ... read more

A Banana Bridge forms the border between Costa Rica and Panama. For miles and miles on either side of the border there are vast banana plantations with blue plastic bags covering the bunches of bananas hanging on the trees to ensure that they reach our supermarkets in pristine condition. Going down to the border there are container depots everywhere including the Man from Delmonte - its the first real industrial area we have passed for weeks, everywhere else has been pristine, green tropical countryside and little villages. The banana bridge is what it says - basically a bridge across the river to carry the train that carries the bananas. Being a railway bridge its got train tracks down the centre and a couple of planks on either side - well there are planks most of the ... read more
