Panama the last Central American country we visited, and we were not sure about what to do or see other than than the Canal of course. Without it Panama may still be part of Columbia. The French went broke building it due to a bad design and yellow fever. The main French stockholder obtained power of attorney from the 12 main families in Panama and made a deal with the USA to complete the project. As expected America and the Frenchman were the winners and the Panamanians realized it after the fact. The canal is something to see ships carrying 4,400 containers squeeze into a lock with 2 feet on either side is something you don’t forget. The thing you have to realize is that Gatun Lake in the center of the isthmus makes the canal ... read more

Last night we had dinner at the Balboa Yacht Club. We decided it is a perfect place to have beer and snacks on a sunny afternoon but no place for dinner although the wine was good. Today we took a tour to the Embera indian village. Interesting trip with a jungle tour and indian dancing. The pictures tell a better story than I can. Glad I wasn't driving because the roads outside the city are not the best. The boat we rode in was also a little unstable as it was hewn from a single log. Seats and back were added (to accomodate their 30hp motor.) The lake/river was stable so the boat ride was not too scarey. We'll be leaving our B&B, La Estancia, tomorrow morning to catch our plane to Costa Rica. It's been ... read more

Last night we had a decent (not great) dinner at Bucaneros. Wine was good at $16 a bottle. This morning, we had a sweaty walk up Ancon Hill to the top. A giant Panamanian flag now flies where a giant US flag used to fly back in the days. We walked back down which was a lot easier task. Later we went over to the Miraflores locks for their tour which was very well done. Watched a cruise ship work its way through the lock - it was slow - like watching paint dry. We turned our car back to the vultures at AVIS - our $15/day average rate magically ended up at about $80/day for the two days we had the car - $11 of that was the GPS which was the only deal. I ... read more

We arrived here last night after spending about 20 minutes or so getting through immigration and customs. Then the nightmare called renting from AVIS (never again - they are second for a good reason). Luckily we also rented a GPS. After they had gone over our car with a microscope to log every tiny scratch (more waiting), we headed out in the dark to find our B&B across town. Many wrong turns and many "at the next available moment, make a legal U-turn" from our GPS later, we found our B&B. Luckily a McDonalds was across from final street, so the GPS found our way. Now, we're sitting on the balcony with a beautiful breeze. The warm air feels wonderful. We have met many nice people with great ideas (the best was not to rent a ... read more

For breakfast I had what is probably a local dish, chorizo sausage with onions and peppers in a brown, sort-of BBQ-flavoured sauce. I also tried “cassava pearls”, deep fried mashed cassava balls with an unidentifiable filling. Not to my taste. Plus lovely papaya and watermelon. Watermelon juice was too weak for flavour. Our first stop on the tour this morning was the museum of Panama Viejo (Old Panama City). We were expeditiously divided into two groups (door side and driver side of the bus) to meet with two local guides from the university, probably students. The museum’s architecture was modern curves and angles. The contents were sparse; apparently many of the artifacts that survived a 19 century fire were too fragile for display. Fortunately, a short bus ride took us to the burnt (but secure) stone ... read more

After over-nighting in a Houston Super 8, Joyce and I had a smooth flight to Panama. Tantalizing glimpses of Mexico (Playa del Carmen and Cozumel?) and Central America were swiftly obscured by huge, puff-ball clouds. Darker towering clouds obscured the Panama Canal as we flew over, yet we did see both the eastern and western entrances, identifiable by the ships at anchor waiting their turn to transit. Immigration was very smooth, and we were met by a smiling young man on behalf of Caravan Tours. Then we had to wait about one hour for people on a Miami flight that theoretically landed just after ours. We grew impatient at waiting in the modest, air-conditioned airport and waited outside in the cloudy warmth – not quite overwhelmed by exhaust fumes from all the taxis and sh... read more

Hi! We are Erika and Fabio, two italian guys from Genoa and we went to Panama two times, then we moved to Chiriquì! We'd like you can discover the beauties of this country, by telling you our travel story! In the first trip we reached Panama City in a very hot panamanian summer night. The nocturnal atmosphere of the capital was marvellous, with its "skyline" of its new skyscrapers of “Punta Paitilla” seen by the "Casco Viejo" or "Casco Antiguo", the old neighbourhood in colonial style of world heritage UNESCO. A mix between modern development and colonial atmosphere so pretty! We stay in the capital just for two nights, at the "Hospedaje Cascoviejo" situated in the historic centre, visiting in the two following days the same Casco Viejo, the Miraflores locks and its museum, situated across ... read more

O Hey! Been a couple of weeks since I posted so there's some good stuff to catch up on. First off, last week we had off of class to work on our internships, so I spent a couple days in the city at the Patronato office working with a woman named Danya, then took off for a 3-day tour of really small co-op farms in Veraguas run by campesinos. I was accompanied by Eric, the Veraguas rep for the Patronato who met me in Santiago and drove around with me for the tour, taking me to farms, introducing me and helping me to foster conversations about the (apparently slightly sensitive) topic I'm researching (Geophagy/pica). I had some serious learning experiences, sometimes learning more about how to ask about the topic to get the people to open ... read more

From Lima we took a plane to Panama City, a whole new leg of the journey now starts as we begin Central America! We arrived in Panama around 6pm, our hotel had arranged for a transfer pick up which was great as we were greeting with a friendly Venezuelan holding up our names. Our room is really nice we also have a little kitchenette which we got really excited about! On our first day we decided to be lazy, we slept in before going for a lazy walk and ended up just going to sit in a café! On day 2 we took a Diablo Rojo (Red Devil), which is what they call the buses here! The name is very fitting, the drivers are crazy! Despite that though these buses have a certain charm about them ... read more
