Panama has been wonderful. We got our 5th into storage on Feb 28th, spent the night at a hotel near the Miami airport. The next morning we flew out to Panama City. It was a great flight. Just 2 1/2 hours and no time change. Piece of cake. Our B&B host in Panama had her Taxi favourite pick us up at the Panama airport. He was a fun guy. He spoke pretty good english. He dropped us off at our B&B, took the hostess grocery shopping and came back and picked up Larry and I and another couple in our B&B and took us to a great dinner place. Before going to dinner he took all of us to the store so I could buy a cell phone. He was great. Interpreted for me, set it ... read more

Panama City It wasn't much of an experience. Well actually, it depends on which way you look at it. I guess it was a very memorable experience, yes indeed it was. One that I won't forget any time soon and I guess it therefore makes my Panamanian experience all the more memorable. I was rather sick during my 4 day stay in the city of Panama. I had food poisoning, I'm guessing from a very suspect kebab I so keenly devoured on my last night in Bocas. Unfortunate really, because for the 5 nights prior to this very unfortunate evening I had indulged in at least 3 kebabs a night (now, now, don't judge!) So on the morning following the night that I so keenly devoured the very suspect kebab it was so unbelievably unfair that ... read more

Dec 21st Puerto Amador and Panama City We left the ship this time by tender (lifeboats that were lowered from the top of the ship). It was a twenty minute boat ride to the terminal, but enjoyable when it is 83F outside. It was an interesting ride over on the boat Rick came over and took our picture and then Wayne came over to take our picture on the boat. The two guys that were sitting beside us said “Are you famous”! Of course, Ron said “Yes, in Canada we are” The guys actually sympathized with us and cursed the paparazzi. We spent sometime trying to get a tour to Embero Indian Village. Leisa had found a beat up taxi around the side of the building for only $25 a piece. When we went over to talk to him, ... read more

Our arrival in Panama City might not have been quite as impressive as Henry Morgan's was in 1671, but we bet he had better weather.  After a bus and a taxi from Tocumen airport, night was just beginning to fall, and the rain was too.  By the time we had checked in to our 17th floor room, the sky was lit up like Blackpool illuminations.  Streaks of lightning aided our limited view of the cloud covered bay and the skyscrapers that are going up at an alarming rate. As we settled into our $320 per night room (cheers Mike!) we found that breakfast wasn't included, nor was wifi (which the t's & c's kindly told us we could prepay or have added to our room bill).  The room, however, did surpass expectations. The bed was vast, mini ... read more

Hello to all from Balboa, Panama Costa Rica: Monday night proved to be very eventful in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. Carl went off to bed nice and early and was planning on listening to the rain to fall asleep. As you might have known it is the start of their rainy season in Central America and oh man did it rain. The gravel and dirt roads outside turned into rivers and our hostel was no match for mother nature. Water poured into the kitchen and over the front threshold, also coming in from the back of the building via the bathrooms. All hands on deck, everyone picked up towels, benches and rocks to build temporary walls, and pots & pans to start bailing out the hostel. All the while, Carl slept listening to the sound of the ... read more

Haven’t updated the blog since the fierce expedition known as the Los Quetzales trail Cerro Punta to Boquete. It was quite a traumatic for Rico but he’s just about able to talk about it now…. We said a sad farewell to Elle and Tash in Almirante. They were heading on their way back up to Costa Rica whereas we were driving on to discover more of Panama. They are continuing their journey from LA to Oz. We’ll definately be keeping in touch with them. Facebook is great. That night we made our way on Panamas brilliant bus service to David. We then got a taxi to the well publicised Purple House Hostel. I’d like to discourage anyone reading this from going there. Yes I know more than the lonely planet that’s 4 years old. Think Andrea ... read more

Due to a combination of my chronic malaise and infrequent wi-fi I now find myself about 4 weeks and 3 countries behind in my travel blog. This has led me to the inevitable conclusion of condensing a couple of weeks travel into one blog or risk just giving up completely (something which I would eventually regret). So, here we go! We arrived in the city of David eagerly anticipating an extraordinary stay at the infamous Purple House hostel. Lonely planet gives this place an outrageously good review but I was seriously disappointed. Stuck out in the dreary suburbs the purple monstrosity stands out like an elephant in a chicken coop. The reason it received such high praise was the reason I hated this place with a passion; the owner. She lives in the hostel and treats ... read more

BIG CANAL

Panama the last Central American country we visited, and we were not sure about what to do or see other than than the Canal of course. Without it Panama may still be part of Columbia. The French went broke building it due to a bad design and yellow fever. The main French stockholder obtained power of attorney from the 12 main families in Panama and made a deal with the USA to complete the project. As expected America and the Frenchman were the winners and the Panamanians realized it after the fact. The canal is something to see ships carrying 4,400 containers squeeze into a lock with 2 feet on either side is something you don’t forget. The thing you have to realize is that Gatun Lake in the center of the isthmus makes the canal ... read more

Hi! We are Erika and Fabio, two italian guys from Genoa and we went to Panama two times, then we moved to Chiriquì! We'd like you can discover the beauties of this country, by telling you our travel story! In the first trip we reached Panama City in a very hot panamanian summer night. The nocturnal atmosphere of the capital was marvellous, with its "skyline" of its new skyscrapers of “Punta Paitilla” seen by the "Casco Viejo" or "Casco Antiguo", the old neighbourhood in colonial style of world heritage UNESCO. A mix between modern development and colonial atmosphere so pretty! We stay in the capital just for two nights, at the "Hospedaje Cascoviejo" situated in the historic centre, visiting in the two following days the same Casco Viejo, the Miraflores locks and its museum, situated across ... read more
