It has been incredibly hot for the last few days, and by the time we arrived at the ferry port all I could think about was having a lie down near a fan... The ferry from San Jorge to Moygalpa, Isla De Ometepe takes just an hour, but I'd seriously underestimated how big the island is, and our bus to Merida from there took another two hours! We arrived at Hacienda Merida in the dark, but were welcomed into the loveliest room (with a double bed - my turn as Sam had the double in Tikal). I think they advertise the rooms here as dorm beds to get backpackers in, but they're not - just very nice private rooms! Or maybe the dorms are being refurbished... Not that I've seen anything that looks like it might ... read more

Geo: 11.5217, -85.6013The storm last night presented Annemarie and I, and our new travel buddies, a bit of a set back. We now had to travel again to get to our small town destination of Santa Cruz on the island. After a quick breakfast we were able to locate a bus that would take us. We arrived about an hour later where we were once again dropped on the side of the road. We asked directions and in blind faith hoped for the best. We had a nice walk of about 2km up a gentle hill. Along the way we were entertained by a small band of noisy howler monkeys. Arriving at a hostel, that doubles as an organic farm and a local coop for coffee growers, we had to decide our next step. Annemarie was really ... read more

After a significant lack of sleep due to practically sleeping with the livestock who were vocal all night Scott was awake at 5a.m to leave to climb one of the volcanoes. Annie went to the beach with most of the girls and was wondering the whole time if he was okay! To be fair, the four that hiked the 1000m incline did it in a very good time of 2 hours 35 minutes up then 3 slippery hours back down. When they turned up at the beach they looked surprisingly healthy and not at all exhausted. After lunch we went to the springs on the island which were very refreshing and had monkeys in the trees above for entertainment. On our return to our temporary home here we had a lovely dinner with our Ometepe mama ... read more

After a delicious waffle in Kathy's famous waffle house we climbed the spiral steps up the church tower to get some amazing views of Grenada before we set off. Scotty couldn't resist buying a hammock seat in a handmade hammock shop which takes in men and women who have been in trouble with drugs and alcohol and give them jobs. Now when we search for a house the criteria will have to include a beam suitable to hang it from! The travelling wasn't too bad, we stood for an hour and a half on a chicken bus then got off at a very chaotic market before heading to the ferry to Ometepe. This is where we stay with local families and our hostess' name is Susana and she lives with her husband and grandson who instantly ... read more

Ometepe is a unique island in the middle of lake Managua, it is basically made up of 2 volcanoes surrounded by settlements, petroglyphs and waterfalls and is its own little paradise. This is one of our last stops in Central America so we wanted to spend a few days here chilling out and doing some of the activities the island has to offer. When we arrived we found a cute little guesthouse called Hospedaje As Mi Tierra in a small hamlet called Balgue on the North side of the western island. This is the end of the road where all the tourists stay as they tend to stay at the isthmus between the 2 volcanoes as there is a nice beach there. We decided to go to the beach the first day and then meet some ... read more

We'd heard we just had to visit the lake island of Ometepe. Several people we'd met raved about it and even stayed longer than planned. Ometepe is an island popping out in the middle of Lago Nicaragua (which itself seemingly makes up half the country's area) and consists mainly of two large volcanoes that can be hiked up. Dan did his homework for accommodation and found a nice little place called Hacienda Merida which gives back to the community in two ways: they run a bilingual school, teaching English as a second language, to prepare kids to enter the tourism trade on the island; and they request that all tour guides soliciting business from guests bring four water bottles filled with non-biodegradable garbage (collected on the island) which will then be used as building materials. The ... read more

The trip from El Salvador to Nicaragua took 15 hours in total. They had movie screens to entertain us however the driver kept teasing us and only played 5 minutes of a movie, then changed it ... over and over and over. Sometimes he'd play the sound of a movie and turn the monitors off ... such a tease. There were 4 border controls to go through as we went from El Salvador to Honduras then Honduras to Nicaragua. This time we gave our passports and money to the driver and he handled all the paperwork. The only hassle I got was the security guard who came on the bus and was asking me what all the bulges were in my pockets and wanted to get his hands in every hole available (pockets). I had no ... read more

Summit Volcán Concepción - a 1,610 m (5,282 ft) active volcano in Nicaragua = check! Our weekend trip to the Isla de Ometepe (Ometepe Island) has definitely taken its spot as the highlight trip of my time here so far. Together with the other interns I have been to Volcán Masaya, Mirador de Catarina (viewpoint), Granada and Volcán Mombacho, León (Volcano boarding!), Estelí and Reserva Natural Tisey, Playa Jiquelite (beach on the south pacific coast near Tola), and now la Isla de Ometepe. Every weekend has been incredible, but this past one has definitely surpassed the others. We had heard that Ometepe was a place we couldn't miss when in Nicaragua, and I wholeheartedly agree. I only wish we had more time there! We only had a little over 2 days on the island, and only ... read more

Granada After doing absolutely nothing on the Corn Islands for two weeks it was very hard to get back into the swing of travelling. As such we did not see an awful lot of Granada. We didn’t have much luck with hostels there so settled on one with a pool we could hang out by while we did some organising for the next part of our trip. As it was a bit of a party hostel we did not get much sleep so did the only sensible thing and joined in. Granada, like the rest of Nicaragua is crazy hot so you get a two for the price of one hangover from half the amount of drinks. We did manage to make it to the market in Masaya which is well worth a visit. It has ... read more

We ended up staying another two nights in San Juan del Sur, and find ourselves back here after visiting Isla de Ometepe for 5 nights. Ometepe is an island made up of two impressive volcano's in the middle of lake Nicaragua, Concepcion and Maderas, the later which we climbed. The journey to get there involved our first chicken bus ride, a taxi, a ferry, another chicken bus and finally one more taxi. The chicken buses are so called because sometimes you could find yourself sitting next to someone carrying a chicken. They are old 1950's and 60's American school buses, and are usually done up with crazy graffiti and flashing lights on the outside, and decked out with a good sound system on the inside. Most have extra large mufflers attached and the sound of the ... read more
