I went to Isla de Ometepe last weekend. Ometepe is an island formed by two volcanoes in the middle of a large fresh water lake, Lake Nicaragua. The island is very beautiful, it is inexpensive (there are no taxes), and the streets are calmer than the busy streets of other Nicaraguan towns and cities. I stayed at Hospedaje Central a hostel in the town Moyogalpa, where one of the ferries are located. The hostel was about $3.50 U.S. dollars and had a restaurant, bar, plenty of hammocks to rest in, and a friendly pet deer that loves to lick people. The hostel organized a hike up Concepción the larger Volcano at over 1,600 meters. Paying for a guide is important because I guess there has been a few deaths. The cost was $12 U.S. dollars each. ... read more

I spent a couple of days in Nicaragua. I agreed to go on a border hop with Krista and Ashley and their new friend Melody. Border hop = you are only allowed a 90 day on a visitor visa for Costa Rica, so before the 90 days are up you have to exit the country for 72 hours and then reenter to get a fresh 90 days. We went to the Island of Ometepe on Lake Nicaragua. Ometepe island is strait out of a adventure movie. The island is formed by 2 volcanoes (only one is active) rising 1700 meters out of the lake.We stayed at the Monkey Island Hostel ( $2.50 /night) on the far side of the Island. It is a very rustic and relaxing place. No phones, on Internet, 2 to 4 other ... read more

Being a paid volunteer does away with the necessity of obtaining a work visa. This is in operation for English teachers around the world where having the correct work permit often involves unfathomable bureaucracy and a lot of money. One advantage of this slightly fishy scam/entirely legal opportunity, is visa runs. Basically, every ninety days I am given some time off and a bit of extra cash, to leave the country for seventy-two hours. I managed to time this particular visa run with Semana Santa, or Easter week. The school and indeed most of Costa Rica, shuts down for eight days. This is looked upon most favourably by the very devout. That being the devout Catholics and the devout travellers. Being against flying unless absolutely necessary, visa run options are Panama or Nicaragua. I can't remember ... read more

I was asked to write something for the website. Here is my story. Please find it on the website: www.nph.org Go to Nicaragua at the top (flag) Then go to volunteer testimonials on the right side Michelle Jacobson (USA) - English Teacher 23 May 2008 - Nicaragua Known as Friends of the Orphans in the USA, the recruitment office in St. Paul actively sought me out while I was a senior in college. Planning to travel and serve abroad, I knew I had many paths. It was October 2006 and I had Spain in the back of my mind. Having recently returned from five glorious months over there, I had never considered serving in Central and South America, where Friends of the Orphans serves. I put it in the back of my mind and explored other ... read more

Time has seemed to take a back seat here in lovely Nicaragua. Lush green forests and plantain forests loom in my backyard. While I eat my breakfast on the patio, I sit and stare at the aloe plant and look out into the distance of tall green trees mixed with palm trees. The sound of the waves in the distance lulls me to sleep. The striking blue bird, a relative to the blue jay I believe, hawks its annoying cry to attract a mate (heaven knows how he/she will with that sound…). I see the base of the volcano in the corner of our house, just a little reminder how close I am to one of nature’s greatest marvels. Despite my awareness of how lucky I am to live here, we have not had Internet in ... read more

So I met up with my brother and sister last tuesday in Liberia, I ended up getting in about 45 mins after them because I missed the early bus out of Managua, oops. Rather than double back across the border we spent a day in Costa Rica at Rincon de la Vieja park. Tiff and Dane were getting used to the hot and humid climate while I was enjoying the cool, dry weather. It's definetely not 'honduras hot' here. The park we went to was something different, there were cracks in the ground puking out boiling mud and geysers spewing out steam all due to volcanic activity. This might have been where doctor seus grew up! Theres a rig drilling holes there so they can use the heat out of the ground to make power, I ... read more

Hola todos. Saludos de Ometepe Island, Nicaragua! Hopefully (soon) to be in the new and revised list of the 7 Wonders of the World. Post your vote on www.laisladeometepe.com Many changes have been taking place, which is the norm here. However, some are worth taking note. Along the way, I will tell my stories. First off, NPH, the organization I am serving through, has recently partnered with the Enrique Iglesias Foundation. I am not sure how we made the connection, but we did. A cameraman came to the orphanage to shoot some footage of the kids singing to Enrique's new song: Donde Esta Corazon. That very same day, they sent the footage, crude, to Miami. How crazy, eh? Unfortunately, I could not be there, as I was on break, which turned out to be quite interesting... ... read more

It's been a really long time since I have written. It has also been a really long time since I have seen home, or so it seems. I miss my family, the familiar and comforting friends, the Minneapolis skyline, the salsa, swing, and ballroom dancing, my car, good wine, the availability of PEOPLE who speak my language and goods and resources, and Lake Calhoun. One day I will go back...I have to survive 8 more months here. However, thank goodness that there is a lot going on here to keep busy with. I will share with you a snid bit of many things I have been up to and my revelations and thoughts. After all, what is a travel blog that just offers an iternary? :) I knew that this trip would really stretch me. I ... read more

It would be fair to intepret the relative lack of entries to a general slackening of adventure and pace on the trip. This is not entirely fair. Yes the high speed chase, blackmarket car deal portion of the trip appears to be behind us. I will catch you up on our progress. After Granada and her majestic cockfights we hopped a bus, and a boat to Isla de Ometepe, a huge island in the shark filled waters of Lake Nicaragua. The island is dominated by two huge volcanoes and looks like it belongs in a fantasy novel. On a great tip we stayed at an ecological farm called Zopolate. It was cheap, had that good hippie vibe and they baked fresh bread and pzza all day. We climbed the lesser of the two volcanoes but it ... read more
