Isla De Ometepe. From San Juan we made our way to Isla de Ometepe. To get here was a bit of a nightmare, it took 3 buses, a taxi and a ferry and 7 hours of travel in total. The last bus on the island was the worse as I don’t think it went over 10 mph. The island is made up of 2 volcanoes merged together by eruptions in the past and surrounded by Lago Nicaragua. The lake is so huge, Central America largest that it feels more like a sea than a lake, so much so that it even has Bull Sharks that migrate from the Caribbean Sea. The main reason to come here was to stay at a local coffee finca that has been recommended and to do some hiking on the island ... read more

ok, so, i think when i left you, i was on my way to ometepe? i received my first proposal on the taxi drive to the ferry dock in ometepe. as a white woman traveling alone, the latino men circle like sharks. this is where not knowning spanish has actually come in handy. the conversation usually goes something like this: hombre: are you traveling alone? yo: yes hombre: are you married? yo: no hombre: do you have any children? yo: no hombre: do you have a boyfriend? yo: no hombre: how old are you? yo: sorry, i don't know numbers in spanish hombre: you and me, we can get married? yo: no hombre: why not? don´t you want to get married? this is where the conversation stops as i can´t answer in either yes or no ... read more

Hola all, Sorry for the long repreve from the computer, but we're finally back into the technology savy areas of Costa Rica that have faster (and cheaper) internet connections. So hgappy reading... After Granada, we decided to return to CR on a path slightly less followed... i.e. by ferry down Lake Nicaragua. The first portion of this journey took us on a 4 hour boat ride to the Island of Ometepe. We jumped ship here and made plans to catch the next one passing by that left in 3 days, giving us some time to explore this cool island. The island of Omotepe was formed by 2 volcanos that rose out of the lake side by side and have since joined together as they grew. A very beautiful spot; it still retains Nicragua's traditional rural lifestyle ... read more

ENGLISH We left San Juan del Sur on an old yellow US school bus passing through Rivas, a kind of loco market/bus terminal on the way to the island of Ometepe. After waiting half an hour for trucks with cartoonish loads of bananas to lumber off the ferry, we boarded in cattle class, which meant the lower deck where you get wet. An hour later we reached Ometepe and boarded the bus to Altagracia. There were a few things, other than volcano, that stood out on that ride to our lakeside haven. There were 3 and 4 year old kids in shirts, ties and mortar boards or miniature lemon ball gowns on their way to what we understood were nursery school graduation ceremonies. Then there was the young woman heaving a graduation cake that was bigger ... read more

After a long, hot and sweaty journey from Costa Rica we made it across the border and into the port town of San Jorge in Nicaragua where we caught the ferry to Isla de Ometepe. The island looks the most impressive from the mainland as it is made up of two volcanoes joined in the middle with a small strip of land in between, pretty stunning. After a good nights sleep we ventured off for a day of exploring the island on a local's moped that he graciously hired to us for the day (Nick wanted to go for the more poweful dirt track bike but I had my reservations after seeing how the locals drive). Our first stop was to a beach and a nearby lagoon whereupon we discovered we had a puncture in our ... read more

Saturday- long day of travel. Made it to San Juan del Sur in Nicaragua. Hot, sweaty, BEAUTIFUL little town. Sunday I went to another beach called Maderas where a world class surf competition was underway (see pictures). Sunday night two funny Canadian girls talked me into heading to Isla de Ometepe with them on Monday. Packed my junk and I jetted with them and 5 others in the back of a truck to the dock of the lake. We then took an hour ferry to the island. Me, Melissa, and Grace (the Canadian girlys) waited for the bus with an ice cream sandwitch and then took the most rickety, half-assed, bo-bo bus ride for 3 hours to Hacienda Merida- where I am currently. It was well worth the ride(s)! Its perfect weather here, I think Im ... read more

Apres ... read more

Travel blog by Jacqui: We arrive on Ometepe to the town of Altagracia, a small village overshadowed by Volcan Concepcion. We find a bargain hostel - Hospidaje Ortiz (US$6 for a double) - and realize why, when we wake at 5 am due to bed sores and heavy snoring man. But Ortiz himself, along with sons Fidel and Arafat (viva Chavez!), are very friendly hosts. We depart for idyllic Playa Santa Domingo where Byron at the Buena Vista welcomes us and provides a home for the next 4 nights. Great hostel! Exploring the towns of Ometepe keeps us busy each day - biking to Merida, eating and drinking at Comedor Gloriana, swimming in lake nicaragua, plenty of hammock time.... What surprises us most about Nicaragua is that we feel like we are the first backpackers to ... read more
