Dec 8, 2010 Wednesday evening Hi everyone, I left this morning from Brooksville at 4:30 am and it was 22 degrees F, passed through Miami airport which is quite chilly and arrived in Managua a little after 1 pm Central Time. In Managua, Nicaragua it was a breezy 80F which is great since it is usually in the 90's. I caught a cab to the bus station and arrived there just in time to get an Expresso Bus to Esteli. One does not drink coffee products on such a bus, it is just a bus that doesn't stop at every corner to pick up people once it leaves the station. That was a little unfortunate for me since I look forward to getting cuijada cheese on a freshly homemade corn tortilla. Ladies who make this get ... read more

Answers to Aunt Lori´s comment and Jeri´s comment. We expect about 500 people to watch the parade and hang out in the non-catholic, evangelical, church during the wedding. We have invited about 160 people and have ordered 175 plates for the private reception. Thank you for the thoughts! Jeri! Yes, call and see if there are rooms at Colonial first and then check out Panamericano 2nd. ............. I am exhaaaaausted. I came into Estelí to get stuff done. First went directly to Doña Moncha´s to give her one of the USA bags that Mom sent me, and to finally give her a wedding invite and see how many people will be coming. I only stayed for like an hour, but it was going on noon by the time I got back into Estelí. Went to the ... read more

Okay, feeling better. Man Dengue sucks. Felt like a truck hit me during the night for about a week. Am in Esteli for a hot minute to meet new volunteers and tell them how awesome Somoto is (i am rolling my eyes) and convince one of them to come to a site near me in August. By the way, where is the time goooooing?! My family is coming in LESS THAN TWO WEEKS! Which means the rest of you are coming in like 3 weeks! WTF?! And then we get married and you all fly home and then the new volulnteers get in and then we have our Close of Service Conference in August, too.....and then I turn 28 in September and then Halloween in October and November is for graduations and goodbye parties since my ... read more

In the later morning and early afternoon yesterday we were so worried that we had lost the Rancho dog and Rico telling Nate and Stephanie, the owners, that he was sorry that we had lost their boy. Nate (or Nato as he is called in the village) went out in his truck to the area where we last saw him and asked everyone there and no one had seen him. Later Rico and I boarded the 1:30 pm bus to the end of the village, sitting on opposite sides of the bus in case we could see him on his way. We thought that maybe he decided to come back along the road instead of the beach the way we had walked earlier. Once the bus got to the end of the beach everyone got off. ... read more

Okay, here´s what´s up. I have to be in Managua Thursday and Friday for an editor meeting of the volunteer online zine, Va Pue, of which I am, predictably, the Travel Section Editor. However, I have been sooooo angry lately, and have been taking it out on Lenin.... and I decided to get the hell out of my community and come to Esteli for Tuesday and Wednesday, and then Managua Thursday and Friday Hence, it´s Tuesday and I am in Esteli. I hope after being away for a few days I will go home and be happy to be there. Here´s why I´m angry though. First, Lenin is my example of a great guy. He takes steps to better his life, to save his money, to think about the future. Doesn´t smoke, drink, or gamble and ... read more

Ah, Esteli. I had to come in for a meeting and, since I'm here, might as well spend the night, use the wireless internet, eat some western food, and get up to go to the Friday Green Market in Esteli and take some tamales and homemade yucca chips and tangerines home while I'm at it. Which also reminds me, belated mail shoutouts! Went to the post office in Somoto the other day but didn't have time to get online. I received one envelope from licenogle, currently of Jackson, WY - thank you! And I received two manilla envelopes from my mom, one with the double sided tape and SweetnSalty granola bars, and the other with some magazines and tissue packets and other goodies. Thank you! Lenin's been sick, so I feel bad being away. When I'm ... read more

Hi, I arrived back in Esteli this afternoon. A storm came through last night and it was really cold and wet this morning at the Miraflor Reserve. While I was there I met a couple and their children who live in Temple Terrace (near Tampa). They were staying in the same cabina area as I was and we were being taken care of by one family. I had a guide take me around one half day and saw the school and the village. There were lots of crops and people got around mostly by horseback or by walking. There is no running water or electricity there. The familes collect rainwater and have a solar powered generator that runs several hours each evening for several hours. All families that I saw had gardens. One of our guides ... read more

Hi! Today I will pack up half of my stuff and head out to the nature preserve called the Miraflor. This area is a cloud forest which is supposed to be like Monteverde, Costa Rica was 40 years ago. Living there is primative, I am told. I have all my warm gear and my head lamp, bug repellant, walking shoes, toilet paper, etc. I will stay with a family for 2 nights and I hope to see some coffee picking and processing. Here are some pictures from around Esteli. They are getting ready for the carnival and horse parade that attracts horses and cowboys from all over Central America. I got to witness the Mis Gallina Competicion (the Miss Chicken Contest) and hopefully my photos will load. I hope to have time to write one last ... read more

Hi everyone, Yesterday afternoon I had a natatamale (Christmas tamale) which is cooked cornmeal around rice and vegetables and it was delicious. It was served at the restaurant across the street from the hostel and they give you coffee all day, gratis! Check out my picture. After resting for a while, I went to an evening yoga class in spanish. I was the only student and the teacher was kind of out of shape. His yoga was nothing like yoga I have every done, but more like calisthenics. But for 10 cordobas ($.50) what can one expect (Cannot find a question mark on this keyboard!)! Then I took a great shower, Wow! I had a wonderful rest in this quiet hostel. I have the deluxe room and slept so well there ($12-night). I made an appointment ... read more
