okay, so mom, maria olga and her husband jaime dropped me off at the location where i was meeting up with the rest of the students. Before dropping me off, we had lunch at Richard´s beautiful house with his sisters, my aunt olga, elaine, stephanie, and margarite´s husband thomas. everybody has been getting along really well and we seem to be meshing. so yesterday was really the first day of the program. it started off with a little bit of a tour of zone 1 where we were staying. Richard and everybody thought i was nuts for staying in zone 1 and unfortunately mom heard all about it, but it was FINE. then there was a speaker from the jesuit university in guatemala who came to give a history of guatemala. then later there was a ... read more

We took the night bus from Flores at 22pm, the air conditioning system above our heads drenched us. We climbed up and up in altitude where the air became poorer but the views got richer, the Quiche Maya people were traditionally dressed in colourful homemade textiles. The tiered farmlands rich with coffee plantations, onions, carrots, beetroot, radish and potatoes spread out like a massive patchwork quilt. Many come to Xela to study language mainly Spanish, there is a huge student population; the main Centro square has some great English style pubs. Unfortunately with the climate high above sea levels, my ankles and feet swelled to oedema proportions. Migraines commenced throughout my time here which is a common complaint to visitors. This is a live volcano district; fluffy clouds of volcanic steam hide their peaks. We experienced ... read more

A lot of the other activities have been climbing the local mountains and volcanoes. The hardest of these was the full moon hike up Santa Maria to collect any rubbish and bring it back down which I mentioned about before. The climb started at 1am and was not too bad, a bit slippery as it was raining and it got a bit steep in places. The worst was the top. We arrived about 45 mins before sun rise and it was freezing. I had a t-shirt, fleece jumper, fleece coat and waterproof jacket, hat and gloves and was still very cold and Michelle was even colder. Luckerly the cold was worth it as the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and volcanoes, to one side we had the ring of 3 volcanoes that surround Lake Atitlan ... read more

I know, I know, this is really really late in coming out (blame the publisher!).... But here it is (better late than never I say). Tikal Okay, so to get to Tikal, (one of the largest Mayan sites) I used a small town called Flores as a base.... this was a pretty small town (about 200km from the GC/Belize border) and arriving with only about $20 USD hoping for a bank was a bad call (it was Sunday and they were all closed or broken) BUGGER! So, I used my trusty supply of travellers cheques (backup cash basically) and managed to get through the next day or so. Anyways, I booked in with the two Aussies and the French guy for the Tikal Sunrise Tour (yeah, up at 5am!) which I nearly missed because I slept ... read more

The third week of language school was at the Mountain School in and area where people struggling with the very basics. At the Mountain School the students stayed together in a home and then eat with local families. By the end of the week I was done with corn tortillas and after three weeks I was looking forward to preparing my own food. The Mountain School was also close to an active volcano and most days we would have a light shower of ash settle on everything. Living among people who were struggling to meet their basic needs was full of contradictions and challenges knowing that I came from privilege. On one hand I can complain about the bus that went by at 5 am every morning honking their horn and waking me from my sleep ... read more

At 4:30am the alarm starting ringing. I jumped out of bed more enthuastically than normal while my brother rolled over and tried to ignore my attempts at early morning conversation. We put a few things together and prepared to leave the room. I didn't feel as fresh I was making out but I was looking forward to the day ahead, Rich still looked asleep although his eyes were open and he was standing up and moving about the place. There seemed a suprisingly large number of people moving around the hostel for this time in the morning, either about to start a trip or returning from one. We walked a little bit down the street to our meeting point and sat waiting for the van, still pitch black. In the distance the gentle rumbling of a ... read more
