From Antigua we decided to head up to Semuc Champey. We've heard it was beautiful and well worth the trip to the middle of nowhere. Since it was a long ride we planned to break it up with a stop at the Biotopo del Quetzal. We really wanted to use local transport instead of the tourist shuttles, but after talking with tourist info in Antigua we decided to take the shuttle for 125GTQ. It would have taken us all the way to Semuc Champey, but we still opted to hop out at the Biotopo and do a walk. we finally made it out of belize. we left a day earlier than we thought we would stay there. too hot, too humid and our stomachs could not handdle the caribbean food any longer. so, we began our return to guate. again, a long bus ride and two boat trips back to puerto barrios. you all know how i feel about puerto barrios, so we bounced right when we got to the port. we got on the road at about 2pm and we had not even had breakfast yet. our next destination was a place called salama in guate, a six hour drive. however, we had to stop and sleep in a small town called rio hondo cause we hungry, tired and it was getting dark. the next morning we had a great guatemalan breakfast and ... read more

From the gorgeous western highlands in Antigua, Guatemala, the families packed up in the rented 12-passenger mini-van and drove for 5 hours to the northern highlands of central Guatemala, to the Biotopo del Quetzal, a protected area specifically set aside for this national bird. These mountains are approximately the same elevation as those we had just left, seemed to be slightly wetter, with lusher forests -- all under the same mild, cool climate. We got there on Thursday, the 28th, checked into our excellent little bungalow suite at the hotel, La Posada del Quetzal, but too late to explore the Biotopo, which closed at 4pm.
