Geo: 22.6481, -79.0214Late breakfast followed by a walk down to the beach to lie under the umbrellas and read our books. Another tough day in paradise. Tim joined in with beach volley ball organised by the entertainment team. His team won but regrettably he pulled his achilles tendon which had just started to repair itself. The beach waiter collected our order for the first pina colada of the day- it would have been rude to have refused! Although I did turn down an on the beach foot massage. We stopped at the little hut on the beach for a quesidilla (we shared one chicken and one shredded beef) and lemon with crushed ice on our way back to the room.We fancied watching a film which Tim viewed whilst in the bath (shutters separating the bedroom from the ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba » Oeste » La Habana March 20th 2017

In my previous blog post about Mexico, I had mentioned that we took 5 days out of our trip to pop over to Havana- sure why not, we were in that location and it was only an hour away, and we didn't want to get Mexico-d out. So off we went and paid out exit fee of 60 dollars to leave Mexico (something we ended up doing twice- hurrah!) and took off to Cuba. So to backtrack a little- we had a massive toss up as to whether we would visit Mexico or Cuba, and which was going to be our principal home for the time we were away, and Mexico won, which meant a short time in Havana. We really had wanted to visit Cuba as well and figured this would be a taster we ... read more

Geo: 22.6481, -79.0214Towels at dawn! Walking to breakfast we noticed all sunbeds were bagsied although there was nobody in sight. Breakfast was cheese omelette with hash browns and bacon. We fed ham to a stray ginger cat with a gammy eye before reading the sign requesting us not to feed the cats!We collected our swimming towels noting that no loungers had yet been occupied despite guest towels suggesting otherwise! Hence we headed for the beach where we found a sunbed under an umbrella and had the plan of staying there for a few hours. Waiters collected orders regularly for the beach bar; not something we're typically used to. At 13:30 we left the beach to have lunch at Sunset restaurant and made our way to reception to hand over our hire car. The driver would need ... read more

Geo: 22.6481, -79.0214Checked out after breakfast as today we are moving across to the other side of the island to an all inclusive beach resort for our final leg. We stopped for petrol - it took a while to work out the pump system but soon on our way having asked another driver who happened to be one of the few Brits we've encountered. The downloaded Sat nav was invaluable when navigating some of the towns but actually the signposts to the next main town on our route were OK. The landscape was mainly flat with mountains in the distance, lots of fruit trees and farm land and locals outside their homes selling fruit, meat or drinks. The villages were buzzing with men on bikes (apart from children we've never seen women riding bikes) or in ... read more

Geo: 21.8, -79.98A Lazy day in Trinidad town exploring. After breakfast we wandered into the main square, read our books and watched the world go by. We climbed the bell tower and visited the museum with exhibits dating back to the revolution, then on to the best coffee shop (according to Manuel) in Trinidad, Don Pepe's. later in the evening we went to La Botija, a really nice restaurant that used to be where slaves were kept in the 1800s. The walls were adorned with chains and other rather sinister equipment. The restaurant staff uniform was a slave outfit.... read more

Geo: 21.8, -79.98Woo hoo Tim's 51st birthday.Breakfast was good here too...only on a grander scale. If the locals could see our breakfast I'm sure they'd be amazed too.We decide to get in the car and find Menas Iznagas. Made significant by its huge concrete tower that was used to view the surrounding sugar plantations. We had a mooch around. Julie bought a table cloth from a local stall and we drove around for a while before finding Mirador. A hilltop bar and viewing point across the Valle de los Inglaisos. Here we read our books and caught up with our diary. It was quite windy being high up - we resisted a go on the zip wire. Back at the hotel we freshened up and went for dinner at a mid-18th century built house turned in ... read more

Geo: 21.8, -79.98Breakfast at 8.30am. Freshly squeezed pineapple, coffee with hot milk. A plate of nicely presented fruit consisting of pineapple, grapefruit, guava, mango and papaya. All followed with toast, bread rolls and a cooked breakfast of bacon, eggs, cheese and sweet potato. We were stuffed!Just before we left we chatted with the people in the other rooms. They were Cubans who had escaped to the USA at the time of the revolution. They had brought their children who were visiting for the first time. It was pretty emotional for the mother. The father was still in the US. He couldn't bring himself to return. We set off for Trinidad. A much shorter journey then the day before. We detoured to El Nicho. A set of waterfalls in the mountains. It was an amazing drive through the ... read more

Geo: 22.1495, -80.4436Time to move on and explore further afield. The first step was how get to Park Central with our bags. The taxis aren't keen to navigate the old town backstreets for such a small job so we decided Julie and the bags would go via rickshaw and I would walk the 20 minutes to the Rex Car Hire office behind the Iberostar Hotel. Sounds exciting but was really quite routine for travel around Havana. It really wasn't possible to drag the bags over the cobbled streets. We had a relatively new Chinese made MG. Not quite an MGB GT but nonetheless good for the job. We didn't want anything that might break down in the wilderness. We used NAVMii to find our way out of the city and onto the motorway. Although the roads are ... read more

Geo: 23.1168, -82.3886No trips today so we decided to retrace the walking tour but going in some of the buildingsBreakfastWe decided to retrace our walk around the old town and look into the interesting places at a slower pace. We're quickly learning that although it looks quite run down it's a very safe city with really friendly people. Our first stop was Armament a Square where we went into the old fort. There was all sorts there including a big chest of pirates gold coins. Definitely worth a visit. We stopped in the square for a while to read our books.... until it started to rain.We found a good place to have a drink under cover in Cathedral square. Their coffee machine was broken so we had a Pina Colada and listened to the street music ... read more

Geo: 22.5823, -83.746We had a private tour booked to take us to Vinales at 8am however Julie had stomach cramps so it was touch and go whether we went anywhere - it's very unlike her not to have breakfast! We decided to go and Manuel our driver met us in reception on the dot. He was very knowledgeable and told us lots about life in Cuba eg: Cubans have ration cards to obtain essentials such as rice, beans, salt. They go to special stores. If they need more food, they go to markets and pay with their wages; Cubans only get a pension if they work for the government for 30 years. Car number plate pre-fix advise who is driving eg an E is an embassy car, a T is a tourist, a B is for ... read more
