Geo: 23.1168, -82.3886Breakfast was OK. A bit like a cross between a continental breakfast and an English one. Only Cuban style with lots of egg, rice, beans amongst other things. The hotel is in a great position in the old part of town. It's quite alien from Basingstoke with people everywhere and buildings that have mostly seen better days. We waited for a guide that we'd booked to have our introduction to the city. Although Millie was late, she was brill. Full of info and really pleasant to be with. She led us around the four main historic squares taking about the building and history as well as giving us an insight into what it's like to live in Cuba. Although obviously less advantaged than us she was really happy and painted a good picture. A well ... read more

Geo: 23.2698, -84.5038Now that we're dealing with two cabins, it's a bigger production to do anything, even breakfast. Karen and I get up by 8 but the entire group cannot possibly make it to the breakfast venue until after 10 due mainly to the beautification process taking place next door. The kid tries passing out toast, coffee and juice, ordered through room service by him.  Arriving at the Lido, we all have an adequate breakfast; fried egg, toast, fruit, orange juice and coffee for me and other stuff for everyone else. Queenie won't drink the water aboard so she uses the bottled water, $4.With our meal out of the way by 11:30am, three of us head up to Deck 15 to get a place by the pool while Mom stays in our stateroom, preferring the solitude ... read more

Wednesday we went to Caya de Juatia, a beautiful beach 2 hours north of Vinales. There were 7 of us in the collectivo taxi, a thoroughly beat up 49 Chevy. Our driver had to stop once to top off the radiator with water, as there was no radiator cap. The roads were awful, with little population along the way. We met a very nice German dentist Lora on the ride. On the way back our driver was constantly playing games with another collectivo taxi, passing each other, racing, etc. We went out that night to the town’s dance club, and sat with Lora and her friend. They both danced with local guys, and were really good salsa dancers. Robin and I stayed firmly rooted in our seats. The music and dance acts were really good, and ... read more

Various aspects on city life Here comes our last blog entry from our trip in Cuba. It is one of those where we don't have much to write because the photos are sort of telling a story themselves. We have here collected photos we wish to publish but haven't been able to fit in any of the previous blogs. Most of the pictures we have taken while walking around in Havana and in other cities. If we are to specify a least common denominator to the photos is that they describe city life in Cuba. When we walked around and took some of the photos you see here we also made a short film to give you an idea of what a street can look like in Havana. As you can see the some of the ... read more

Cadillac, Ford, Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, Dodge and DeSoto Yank Tank is a nickname for large American cars made in the 1950-ies and 60-ies. For anyone who likes those cars visiting Cuba must be like coming to heaven because there are many such cars in use there. One of the things we knew about Cuba before we set off on this trip was that many of the cars they drive are American cars from the 1950-ies. Before the Cuban Revolution in the 1950-ies almost all cars in Cuba were Made in America. After the revolution United States put a trades embargo on Cuba. The embargo stopped American car makers from selling new cars to Cuba. Another result of the embargo was that the Cuban economy plummeted. So they could not afford to buy new cars from other ... read more

Che, Fidel, John, Paul, George and Ringo When we came home after our two week long trip in Cuba we sat down and asked ourselves how we with our blogs could describe how we perceived the country. In our photos we noticed that many of them could be said to be pictures of icons. Icons in the meaning of people with icon status. We would here at the beginning make one thing clear. When we say that the people in the pictures are "icons" it does not reflect our personal view. Our private opinion of the people we write about in this blog is not relevant. What we mean when we call them "icons" is that it is how we believe they are seen as by the people of Cuba. The first and foremost of these ... read more

Touring Cuba When we were in Cuba we also wanted to visit several places outside Havana. It turned out that it was slightly more difficult to get around than we expected. Bus tickets were often sold out several days in advance and trains in Cuba are most of the times scarce, unreliable and slow. Therefore we often had to take so called collectivo when we went from one place to the next. Collectivo is when people go together and arrange transport by sharing a taxi. It can also be someone who has a private car and is going to drive from one city to the next and pick up paying passengers to share the costs for the ride. Whenever we wanted to go from one place to another it was a constant struggle to try to ... read more

After spending a couple more days exploring La Habana (especially the old part of the city), on the 15th of Dec, John and I got on the Via Azul (state run) bus and headed for Cienfuegos to have some down time. It was a four hour trip with one rest stop. We we arrived, we connected with Markos and Joan for dinner and dancing in a little place off the town square. They were coming from a beach near Trinidad where they'd stayed with Art and Dee. John and I spent the next couple of days on the Punta Gorda (at a Casa Particular, The Casa Amarilla). We then took a cab to Playa Luna where we stayed in "Villa Busto," a casa right on the beach. Our hosts were Lu and her daughter Sandra, both ... read more

Havana We have for a couple of years been thinking that Cuba might be an interesting place to visit. During Christmas and New Year we had some time off and we decided to go there and figure out if Cuba is interesting or not. We started and ended our visit in Cuba in the capital Havana. Havana is a city with large contrasts - The old town and the historical city centre - In this area there are plenty of high end hotels, restaurants cafés and other facilities with the main purpose to as efficiently and painlessly as possible ensure that tourists are separated from their money. It is a typical tourist ghetto and that is where tourist tend to hang most of the time. The old historical buildings are in beautiful condition or are awaiting ... read more

Geo: 21.9451, -85.1398Today we were at sea.We met at Cabanas for breakfast and then headed to the atrium lobby to meet Santa. Even though we were 15 minutes early, the line was already quite long. We were in line for over an hour but, we got to see him and our names were added to the Nice List. Before lunch we went to Cruisin' for Trivia (another second place). We went to Tritons for lunch. Regan informed us that the calamari and pasta she had for lunch in Tritons was better than what she had the night before. We had some down time before our next activity which was a family craft. We made foam flower shaped thermometers. Then it was off to another trivia. This time was Movie Tunes Trivia. We took home Winner Medals again.Keslie and ... read more
