Photos by Berm; Text by Alison After spending a few days back in Havana, our plan was to head eastward along the island. The weather in Havana was much cooler than we had expected and we had heard from other travellers that it was warmer farther east along the island. That was all the encouragement that we needed to make our plans. We decided to head east in greater style than by the tourist buses (which are actually quite luxurious by Cuban standards) and so we splurged on one week of car rental. Our budget didn't allow for too much luxury though, so we selected the most economical car - one that was about the size of a tin can with wheels. I had a good laugh everytime Berm climbed into the driver's seat. He ... read more

We got up early this morning and enjoyed some nice breakfast. It was great to wake up in a hotel in the middle of a forest, opening the window and seeing the beautiful flowers and plants. And we learned why it is called rainforest. On our way down from the mountains, the weather got better and the sun was actually coming out. We arrived in Trinidad before noon. Trinidad is UNESCO world heritage and in my opinion the most beautiful city in Cuba. We walked through the whole innercity and we went up the tower of the Ignesia y Convento de San Francisco, from where we could see the whole innercity. Later we visited the inside of the church and afterwards drove out of the city to an old sugar plantation. There we were able to ... read more

It’s challenging to describe Trinidad and not come across as an insensitive person but I guess the most effective way of stating them is to elaborate our experience as truthful as we can. After spending most of our time in all-inclusive areas, we set our sights on Trinidad, situated East of Varadero and Habana. We knew little of it nor have a clue what’s it known for. All we banked on is the idea that if it’s outside all-inclusive areas, we would hopefully get a better perspective of the real Cuba. As we drove along the paved and un-paved roads, loads of hitch hikers waited along. Our guide put it quite eloquently if I may say, “hitch hiking in Cuba is a national past time, almost comparable to Baseball”. He mentioned the wait can go long ... read more

Viva Trinidad. I can't tell you how excited I was to see this spectacular spot on the planet. UNESCO you rock. Keep up the good work. By far my favourite in Cuba (so far), Trinidad is amazing, slightly more touristy, but quite literally frozen in time for 50 years. There is a photo opportunity around every corner. Every dog has an attitude. Trinidad is the epitome of what I thought Cuba would look like: cobblestone streets, men playing dominos under street-lamps late into the cool evenings, horse and carts clicky-clacking down the lanes, glorious white sand beaches only minutes away, red and orange tile roofs that sparkle in an evening sunset. It's all sensory overload. We lucked out again with our Casa Particular family too. Hortensia and Ricardo are the sweetest, friendliest people you could ever ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba » Centro » Camagüey November 12th 2009

Just like someone clapped their hands together, the humidity suddenly broke as we arrived into the city of Camaguey. Cool and breezy, I figured a nice stroll around the town to get my bearings before the sun dropped behind the buildings would be a good idea. I walked about three blocks before I realized, maybe not. As I was staring blankly at my trusty map trying to figure out the general direction of one of the town squares, a local man approached me smiling and said Camaguey was like taking a dinner plate and smashing it on the ground. He pointed at my map. See how the pieces look? All scattered? His toothy, well weathered grin, knowingly proud. This is Camaguey. He wishes me luck before limping away. Suddenly my map looks like a broken dinner ... read more

World Heritage Site Trinidad - a fine, half-preserved town on the south Cribbean coast. Not sure what I was expecting, but this was a surprise; small, immensely peaceful and virtually no tourists...there are beautiful, ornate Portuguese-style houses, surrounded by wrought-iron grilles, sitting quietly on sunny empty streets. Walk past an open window and you'll see a still-life: an old rocker, wood smoothed over decades and decades of use, waiting for someone to warm it...a tiny market full of lace and cobbled streets full of people who smile rather than talk - none of the hustle and stridency of markets the world over... It was founded in 1514 by Valazquez and the architecture is a strange - but wonderful - mix of Moorish and Baroque (if that doesn't sound too bizarre!) a town of teracotta roofs and ... read more

We have had our 2 days getting 500km by different routes. James did it hard with 4 flats on the 1st day )150km) , 200km ) 9hrs23min biking time) on the autopas the next day and a cruisey 150km today in the heat. I got into town 3 hrs before and got a casa. He got to the town square at 4pm on the dot, well done. The two towns Chris stopped at had beatiful town squares with nice spanish buildings and Trinadad is the best at that. Quite beautiful. My bike suffered a bit of damage on the bus trip, broken spoke and not tolls for changing, removen hub. But it ran well today so it might be fine and I will look out for a mechinico. We are heading to the coast for a ... read more
