Pura Vida! I must say, this is by far above and beyond my wildest expectations, and I have only been here for less than two days! I had two long delays on the way down here-on the airport in Charlotte for almost two hours(barely made my connection in Atlanta)then another hold up in Atlanta...but by the time our 767 crossed over Laguna de Nicaragua, I knew I was in the right place. I got to Juan Santamaria Aeropuerto at about 2:30, and to my amazement, I was met by an arrangement of people that I would have never imagined-the first big surprise was finding that an old friend from high school(Tyler Williams, for those who know him), then a girl from UNCW, and then an old friend of Jake Reynolds, the dude that's subleasing my room ... read more

Well folks I'm trying to do a big blog update today! My apologies for not getting something out more Christmas related, closer to Christmas! First of all, I'm excited to anounce that I have a camera again! So from Costa Rica onward I will have photo's for everyone! Once Frank shows up here for New Years with all the photo's from the mosquito coast and the corn islands I will go back and add lots of those for you to see. Ryan and John and I arrived here on December 23rd, met Jordan, Devon, Michelle and Danielle. We had a big Christmas eve with lots of sharads (literally) in which Ryan expected us to somehow act out Tomato aspec. Apprently it's Christmas related. Big tradition. Was pretty funny acting out christmas related items, traditions etc. Especially ... read more

Never a dull moment...last week we made our first visit to a Costa Rican dentist to have our teeth cleaned. They don´t do it the same way as in the States--apparently it´s the same as in Italy. They clean them by using a tiny drill that shoots water between your teeth--kind of like a deep pressure cleaning. It worked fine, but I was soaking wet by the time it was over--but the best part is it was only $16.00 each. A few days later I ended up with a UTI and had to make a trip to the doctor. It´s so bizarre here. There is never a wait at the doctor´s office. You walk into a clinic and a doctor sees you within a minute. They have labs there also, so they can run tests and ... read more

Merry Christmas to everyone. I am in Playa del Coco right now with Jordan, Jason, Devon, Michelle, Danielle, Mike from London and John from the U.S. Me, Jas and John got here on the 23rd and were quickly finding out that it would be extremely diffcult to get a place to stay after the 26th...apparently this place is going to be crazy on New Year's Eve. Anyway, after staying in a lady's house/hostel type thing with dogs, roosters, chickens and all, we ended up finding a studio in the same complex as Jord and co. Not as cheap as we would like, but we have it for the week and well, it's good to be staying somewhere nice for the holidays. We had an amazing Christmas, and the food - pancakes, bacon, baked goods from Vancouver, ... read more

It is hard to believe that I have been living here in Costa Rica for six months already. Who would have thought that at this time last year, I would be living in this developing country paradise “south of the border.” A year ago I wasn’t working, figuring out where to go, what to do—essentially trying to determine what my next move would be. I had some good options but none of the places in the United States I could have moved to motivated me very much. Even the jobs offered to me did not do much for me. I think I had enough of working for some big company, making faceless shareholders rich. So, I am here, and it is my home until somewhere else, something else, or someone else motivates me. Not that I ... read more

Hello all, me again! Andrew is addicted to his book. Well, you guessed it, we saw lava which was the most amazing thing ever. We had chatted to other travellers who saw either nothing or an "orange glow" at Volcan Arenal, and I had very low expectations to avoid disappointment. But we just got off the bus and saw the volcano spitting molten rocks again and again. I was surprised at how quickly they moved down the cone. Our tour leader said we were really lucky, and we have decided we are the lucky group because we keep fluking lots of cool things. Today we travelled to Monteverde, a privately owned but protected area of cloud forest. We hired a guide, and it was sensational. We saw racoons, monkeys, a vulture, hummingbirds, snakes, massive stick insects, ... read more

We arrived in San Jose in the evening of the 28th October, flying via Panama City. It was funny to go back to the hotel I had stayed in on my own when I had been there previously. After a day in San Jose we went down to the Caribbean village of Puerto Veijo de Talamanca, where I had also been before. It is a great place, but it rains a lot, so we ended up spending a lot of time in our room. During the sunny days however we made it to the beach and walked along the beautiful coastline. It was great to be in a place where we could relax, just the two of us. We ended up staying there for quite a while, hiring out a moped one day and driving down ... read more

This is my last day in Costa Rica. I arrived in San Jose last night. I couldn't believe it when I got off the bus .. in summer clothes .. skirt and vest .. it was bloody freezing! It's hot in the day, but overnight at the moment it goes down to 15 degrees .. which was a bit of a shock to the system. I'm staying at somewhere called Kap's Place .. it's a pleasant little guest house .. and luxury after over 2 weeks in bunk beds and dorm rooms ... I've got my own room with double bed, cable TV (showing loads of american crap), and best of all .. HOT water!! You don't actually miss the hot water too much when you don't have it and it's so hot .. but oh ... read more

Hello all. Andrew is asleep right now so you will have to put up with me again. Yesterday we got in to Fortuna on a packed local bus. It is a small and breath-taking town surrounded by mountains, which still continue to surprise us with their size. Our mountains are so small by comparison. Last night we visited the hot springs up the road. It is actually a complex with at least 8 pools with water of varying temperature. I definitely smelled chlorine so I don't know how "fresh" the water is. It was very relaxing and had swim-up bars. We drank cocktails and enjoyed the warm water. Conveniently, I managed to spill half my pina colada in the springs and I was so embarrassed I swam away after pretending I hadn't noticed for a few ... read more
