So after our first early morning trip to the airport, we did it all over again! This time we caught our flight and flew out to the village of Tortuguero. We had decided to fly since there are no roads going there and we would get to see some of the country from the air. We arrived at about 6:30am and caught the water taxi into the village. The village is prettty small, with about 700 people on a small spit of land with the Carribean ocean on one side and a river and jungle on the other. Bonny, the guy who runs the water taxi showed us to a place to stay. On the way his dog followed us. When we asked the dogs name, he said he was called "Feeling", since the dog was ... read more

We had a flight booked to head out to Tortuguero at 5:45am, which meant being at the airport at 5am, which meant getting a taxi at 4:30am, which meant getting up at 4:15am - hooray! We had decided to stay another day in San Jose to try and get my camera repaired, since I didn't want to lug it around if it was no use. We tried calling the airline to see if we could change the ticket but had no luck, so we just caught the taxi out to the airport anyway to change the flight if we could, or, catch the flight if the ticket could not be changed. Fortunately the flight was easily changed and we headed back to the hotel, checked back in and went back to bed! We got up later ... read more

Hello.. just a quick one, as I am falling very behind with this thing!! We arrived in Costa Rica over a rickety bridge from Panama, and stayed on the Carribean coast in Puerto Viejo A chilled out beachy place.. did a little more relaxing before heading off to San Jose to meet my friend Gill, straight of the plane from England!! San Jose was not that great, just a big city really, but was very excited to be waiting at the airport for Gill!! Although became very apparent that Costa Rica has a different kind of tourist... mainly Texans! Costa Rica is to the US what Spain is to the UK. But still beautiful.. we took a bus up to Monteverdi a cloud forest in the north.. Gills first one.. also the first one I have ... read more

We had a delightful series of flights to Costa Rica, with a flight to San Francisco, a 3 hour stopover, a midnight flight to Houston, another 3 hour stopover, and then a flight to San Jose at about 6am. It was great to arrive in the humidity and heat of Costa Rica's captial, San Jose - a nice change from the dryness of Calgary! We caught a taxi into town and checked into the Colonial Hotel. We had a full day of exploring the city, which was a lot nicer than we expected. The town was a mixture of really run-down places and some old colonial buildings that were still kept in good shape. On our first trip out we got caught in one of those tropical downpours and bought some small umbrellas from one of ... read more

Hi all Its been another furious two weeks since the last blog. We basically changed groups for the second part of the tour in Antigua, where amazingly, there was more welsh on the tour than any other nationality! Now people say its a small world, and its always pretty weird when you meet somebody abroad who knows the same people as you. But I´d say its very bloody weird when you meet somebody in Guatemala who says they have a photo of your dad on their mantlepiece!!!! So it seems that Kate from Crickhowell´s Dad (Morning Uncle Ken!), works with my Dad up in Brecon. Small bloody world!!! So Major Jackson, I´m afraid that as my budget dwindles, I may be forced to post some questionable photos online of your daughter unless we can reach some ... read more

First of all...our monitor died at my house--we think it got hit by lightning, so I won´t be on as often. And I wrote this entry on the 5th. Be prepared for a long entry! My family here is awesome! Not that I don´t miss mine back home, but...I got very lucky. I live in San Juan Norte. My host dad, Arturo, is a farmer, and my host mom, Nani, stays at home. I have two sisters--Cindy, 20 and Yuliana, 16--and two brothers--Jorge, 14 and Yeisson, 8. Families are huge here--in both size and importance. Everywhere we go, they point out hou7ses of aunts and uncles. Yuli told me that Nnai has 8 siblings and Arturo, 14. And I thought Karen had a big family! I had a tour of the farm the secodn day I was ... read more

It was finally time to leave and and good chums Stef and Ang dropped us off at the airport at about 5pm. While waiting at the gate to fly out, I had a nasty surprise when I found out that after dropping my bag on the ground, my camera no longer worked! At least we still had Trishs camera that still took pictures but the LCD display on that was broken. Funny that I have managed to break 3 different digital cameras in the last 5 months... whats up with that... ... read more

Now that summer vacation is upon us, we have a chance to look back at the school year that was. (Last Friday, June 30, was Ellie’s last day of school and Ari’s was the week before that.) It is hard to believe that the whole school year has gone. In some ways it flew by so quickly it hardly seems like a blink. In other ways, the beginning of the school year seems like it was a very long time ago. It is quite a paradox and I can’t seem to put it into words - but I’m sure you know what I mean. In the works of the Grate philosophers, “What a long, strange trip it’s been.” The year started off normally enough -- Ari started the second grade at Quarry Hill in Mrs. Lowe’s ... read more

Happy 4th of July everyone! Sorry, it seems that the travelblog web-site has had some bugs over the past few weeks. Hopefully those have been worked out and everyone can get access to the blogs. I think that one guy, Ali, runs the whole site. Considering the size and scope of it, I'd say he does a pretty good job. And, hey, it’s free so who are we to complain. Anyway, we’d like to wish everyone a Happy 4th of July. To answer the question that is on everyone’s mind - yes, they do have the 4th of July here. What, you think they go from July 3rd right to July 5th? Ha, ha, good one, right? Yeah, I crack myself up. I think I heard that joke back when I was Ari’s age. Of course, ... read more
