Jeezze, its been to long my friends! Im having a wonderful time being a dirty hippy at the farm. I work and sweat and paint and talk about mushrooms and pot, take showers only when I want, sleep in hammocks, light nag champa and sage all day and live the fucking good life. Thats what it is, for real. A little carmel colored baby goat has adopted me as his mom or girlfriend. Ive been painting a mandala (a Buddhist prayer wheel) on the inside of the new goat/sheep pen and my little man talks to me all day long! Semana Santa (holy week, the week of Easter) was insane. Over 20 volunteers there for the weekend, so comunal dinner on friday night was outa this world. We did a celebration of the full moon, and ... read more

Buenos Dias everyone! So after a week of intensive studying in Heredia it was about time I went to see other parts of the country, and what could be better than a weekend by the beach?!!! So after our exam testing our Spanish level, 6 of us and "tour guide" Gerry (a Costa Rican, aka "Tico") set off for Manuel Antonio, a beach resort/national park on the Pacific Coast. We stopped off at a bridge on the way where we saw about 20 crocodiles just lazing on their little island under the bridge!! (See the pictures.)We arrived at our sweet little hotel "Los Almendros" around 5pm and went straight to the beach which was a 3 minute walk away. The sea water was nice and warm and the waves were huge, there were several surfers which ... read more

“You want?” The clerk held up plastic. It was a bag, like any other, commonly seen blowing down a street or swept to the side, submerged in the gutters. “No thanks. I have my own here. Reusable.” I lifted the backpack to the checkout counter. “¡Pura Vida!” he said. ¡Pura Vida! Costa Rica’s signature of an eco-friendly consciousness. Heard everywhere, ¡Pura Vida! expresses the pure life, a worry-free contentment, a cure within society. Within the two mountainous settlements of Santa Elena and Monteverde, ¡Pura Vida! is practiced and contained like an abecedarian lesson, honored as an idolatry of the human Soul. From organic produce, to conservation efforts and eco-tourism, the small-town communities present a choice; the ¡Pura Vida! reality representing Life’s diverse beauty. “¡Pura Vida!” I replied, placing the fresh mangoes, mushroom... read more

Liz and I hit the sack early... We woke up for the 3rd night in a row by the people next to us bangin. So Liz and I agree that if it happens tomorrow, we´re going to start clapping very loud and saying ¨Bravo, Bravo!¨. Anyway, we hiked the waterfall today and sweated our nads off... But then got in the water, and it was FREEZING!! Probally the only time I´ll be cold here... Hot Rod Johnson (Liz´s love affair) said there are some guys who just came into town from Arizona, so maybe I´ll try to find them tonight and have some good ól home state gossip! On Monday I should be heading back to San Jose and then to Tortugero for some turtle business, so I might not be able to write for a ... read more

The internet here is so slow, Im not sure it my last entry posted, or Im going crazy.... So, if its up twice, I apoligize! The days here are lazy... I got up this morning pretty early for Tico time (the phenominom of no one paying attention to the real time...) and headed to the beach. I got sand stuck in my ass really well, got a little red, headed back home... I didnt have enough money for water, but the lady I bought it from just said to come back whenever and pay her the rest... Liz lost our room key last night, so we couldnt use el bano, and so I spent a few hours with sand in my cunchata till we could get a new key. Just finished up a nice cold shower ... read more

So I try to be a student. I hung out at Spanish school for a few days. I met tons or really neat people! Smoked a joint with the oldest man on the planet (sorry mom, but its freakin Costa Rica) at my hostel. But Yesterday, this girl Liz and Jonica were heading to the beach (a five hour combined travel with bus, taxi, bus, ferry, bus), and about ten minutes before I left Liz said I should go, and I thought about it and just went. Payed for my two days at spanish school, packed all my shit (although I left my stupid rope sandals at the hostel on accident) and we jetted out. The bus ride was bumpy, it got pretty hot, and two birds shit on Liz on the ferry. We finally got ... read more

after a few low-key, rain trodden days in la fortuna (but a fun white water rafting adventure!), i headed to the cloud forests of monteverde and santa elena. the cloud forests are rain forests in elevated regions, making them more susceptible to moisture, cloud formations, and thus creating very fertile habitats for a variety of wildlife indigenous to costa rica. The infamous quetzal and elusive golden toad top the list of things to see, as one explores the forest trails either solo or with a hired guide. there are also a ton of bird species, hummingbirds, monkeys and sloths to grab your attention (we mostly saw a ton of birds...) the other big draw to the monteverde region is the adventurous and exhilirating canopy zip line tours. literally, series of cables that are strung from the ... read more

Hello again! It´s Monday again and I´m back at school. I think I managed to thoroughly frustrate my teacher today - she doesn´t speak a lick of English, and I didn´t understand much of what she said in Spanish, so this morning was interesting. Hopefully the rest of the week is better. More importantly, however, was my trip to the beach this weekend! (Just kidding Mom and Dad). This weekend I went to Manuel Antonio National Park, which is on the central Pacific coast. I´ve never seen the ocean look blue - it was stunning! My friend Scott (housemate) went with me, and we took the bus. Next time I take the bus I plan on sedating myself first - driving through the mountains on a bus full of Ticos is a nail-biting experience. On the ... read more
